Why did he take saka off?

France there for the taking.

Another missed opportunity.

England were the better side and it’s a huge missed opportunity imo. France defended poorly. They gave away three pens and are very lucky that the first wasn’t given and that the third missed the target.

Maybe vs Spain in the nations league, but I can’t remember a better England performance against a top side under Gareth. Really unlucky.

Blatant underdogs and punched above our weight.

Went out trying.

This team went out trying but the manager decided to bring on a player who spent the best part of a week away from the camp with other concerns and another of his favourites that never ever delivers for England.

Southgate is to blame, just like against Italy and Croatia. He cannot react to the flow of a game and he is tactically inflexible from his starting position. He also relies heavily on favourites even if they aren’t in form.

Who to blame?

The curse of ITV or Robbie Williams visiting the team?

Gianni Infantino?

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani?

There’s only two trophies to win at two year intervals. Its hard - it’s sport at its very highest level.

I agree.

Nations League relegation too.

But we have underachieved in the last 3 tournaments for the players we have.

Draws have been kind. France will walk this tournament now.

It’s a positive sign that you can recognise the situation you’re in and can talk about it, keep talking about how you feel and take care.

Getting into this and basing your routine around it and thinking about it non stop really fills the void, and when it ends it can be very triggering. Thankfully I know what to do to prevent it being as bad this time. Thank you

Giving Giroud those clear opportunities was a big failure on our defence.

Needs to be properly analysed. Three free opportunities close to goal throughout, eventually one going in.

Too much was made about stopping Mbappe and that's enough.

Nations League?

Getting spanked 4-0 by Hungary?

But yeah, you lot keep thinking he's the best thing since sliced bread.

But if you thought about it, you'd realise this pool of England players deserve better.

Play to our strengths...a wealth of attacking talent.

There is quite a bit of space between best thing since sliced bread and total failure who's achieved nothing and I think most reasonable people would agree Southgate probably occupies that space

Think Southgate’s had a good tournament.

Everyone before the tournament would have said Quarters. It’s par, so today was all about the performance. We couldn’t go over the top attacking today cos the counter for France is deadly

Yep, for all the guff about easy draws in the past we've probably met the most accomplished nation a little too early here.

Again I'm not even particularly pro-Southgate but he really can't win in some quarters it seems. For all the chat about how good this squad is he's still having to compensate for the fact his centre halves are a guy who's become a meme to the point he's got absolutely no confidence and another guy who's not a regular at his club. I think a refresh would be good but I don't think a new manager will suddenly mean we win tournaments at a canter and a bit of a reality check about where this squad is really lacking might be needed.

Did I say he was the best thing since sliced bread? Don't just make stuff up 😂 I've said I'm not a fan. But yearning for two managers who under performed with England is weird.

Last 8 is pretty much standard for us. It's what, I think, most would've expected and accepted pre-tournament.

If God and Benzema had played we would have lost comfortably

You win nothing playing 11 attackers, you need defence of comparative top quality

Marooning Walker to cover for the insufficient CBs was always a risky strategy, but one that was difficult to avoid with our currently piss poor defensive options

I think Saka was cooked. Moments before he came off he didn’t track back for Mbappe so was expecting him to get hooked.

A reminder that Maddison finally got his nose in the squad bevause of these stats. Turns out if he really wants to make an appearance off the bench in the last few moments, you need to aim for the bottom of the list

Nations League this term was daft - and it’s largely irrelevant.

In no way did we underachieve in 2018. We had Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Fabian Delph appearing in the first XI.

2020/21 was shit.

This WC was pretty much par - went out to the favourites.

He looked good to me. Fair enough on the tracking back but he looked good going forward. Sterling is a waste of time. Poor man's Lloyd dyer.

Southgate's like Rodgers in two  ways - works to a rigid plan, despite the need to adapt at critical moments. He has his favourites - and that's the end of. Despite all the talking up, only Saka and Bellingham have really stood out in this WC.

There's no one like Griezmann in our team. Madders is the only one with his kind of awareness, but Southgate picks good workers rather than creators. Tchoumeni had the confidence and technique to throw a sucker punch. England were gifted two penaltys. They needed more than that to beat France.

I expect France will win this but hope Croatia do. May the best team left win.

I see Tom and others who constantly say they're done with England have a lot to say on the performance tonight lol

They want the Sven and Fabio years back wasting probably some of the best defensive units we'll have for some time.
