Did no-one notice the state of the defence before they scored their second?

It was all over the place. Kane popping up at LB, Shaw on RW, a simple knock back header to Giroud a couple of minutes before the goal was a obvious warning. Our defence is just not good enough, we didn't deserve to go though because we're crap.

And they believe it whole heartedly!!!

That's simply not true is it?

It's simply a song adopted by football fans.

Some fans might sing it with over confidence but it's a bit of fun. Nothing more

The French will win it. Best team by a mile

Yes. Several standout players - two already mentioned and Rabiot and Giroud. Modric and Messi are really the only world-class' players in the other semi-finalists. Morocco are a superb defensive side, but lack a creative lynch pin.

OK, I can't post you both, but @Tommy Fresh and @Miquel The Work Geordie...

Southgate is tactically clueless.

We needed creativity. He bought on Mount.

He took off Saka.

I'm not saying I want Sven or Capello in charge, I'm saying we got to the same stage as those 2 did.

Russia 18 was a semi because the draw was kind. Incredibly kind. We were penalty kicks away from going out in round 2.

We lost 3 out of 7 games lol

Euro 2020 was similar. Basically a home tournament for us. We beat Germany, that's it.

I don't get the Southgate love in.

He might have built a good spirit, but that's it. The football is shite and negative.

You're telling me that Mount and Gallagher should be anywhere near that squad?

Behave.

Rest in peace my thumbs from scrolling, not every sentence needs a return, brother.

But...

Again, you're acting as if we are vehemently pro-Southgate when we've both conceded his failings? There are plenty of things about him that could be better, at no stage have I said anything else. I've said numerous times tonight that I think a change would probably suit us now. But it's okay to think he's done an alright job without you chiming up with the phrase "love in" you know.

The football in tournaments has been no more dull or negative (quite the opposite) to any other World Cup or Euros I've watched since the first I remember in 96. Of those, only 04 has come close to matching the genuine optimism I've had regarding England under Southgate. I don't disagree that he's had some favourable draws but we've made light work of knockout games that previous managers would've mangled. Again, aside from 04, I don't recall us ever brushing sides away like we have under him.

So Euro 2020 was a home tournament on that occasion (easy!) but doesn't count for Euro 96 (hard!). Makes sense, perfect logic.

The "built a good spirit" thing is a real dismissive throwaway remark for something genuinely brilliant given the state of the national side post-Hodgson where *no one* was invested, we were genuinely terrible, borderline on our knees and tournaments were something to dread rather than be hopeful for. This is the most backable England side arguably in my lifetime and a lot of that is down to the manager.

I don't rate either particularly, but I think that is more a telling indictment of our lack of central midfield options than one on Southgate himself – which is why I think some people need a reality check about the depth of talent in this pool of players. We have some exceptional attacking talent but a real dearth of quality in the middle of the pitch (beyond the three that started tonight) and at centre half. A new manager won't change that. For all your chat of this being a wonderful generation it has some very obvious flaws, which is often met with either "let them play" or "just go at it" which is so reductive I don't know where to start.

But thank you!

Southgate can’t control how a penalty is missed…

Kane is captain..but I said (when Mount who won the penalty,by being positive)

“It has to go to Rashford”…….Kane was nervous in the first penalty,

Henderson somebody should have ( even against the captain) had a word…

That said, not complaining, hurt disappointed yes..& Kane will not get lambasted by me, though discussion on technique/descision making on how, are normal things to discuss it’s part of football banter…

I would have Rashford on by 50 minutes, either for Rice or Henderson..

We needed to be more clinical,I was also thinking, maybe Wilson or Rashford for Kane, instead of one of the former mentioned midfielders..

Loosing to the world champions is no disgrace, but we had them.We had them on the ropes, but didn’t have that clinical move in us…

Sterling coming on…:dunno:

That said, the French have winners from all angles, they don’t need Mbappe he’s the icing on the cake..

And Robson is widely loved by the public now. 1990 made a generation fall in love with football again after hooliganism.

And Southgate had a better bunch of players, and failed.

We were Gazza's studs away from winning Euro 96.

Gazza. An incredibly talented player, but an alcoholic. And the rest of the squad weren't much better.

Southgate is working with finely tuned athletes, not a bunch coming from the dentists chair.

I'm not looking for an argument either, I'm just trying to make you see that you're wrong.

Yep - I’ve always taken it as a bit of a humorous self-jibe not a piece of arrogance. More Python than Jim Davidson.

I always think it’s just a joke. We obviously don’t believe it and sing as it’s catchy and also gets reactions from others.

Back from the pub, my take…

It was actually a pretty disappointing game, both sides were way below their best. France’s early goal meant they could sit back. Ref was dodgy but not decisive. We created pretty much nothing and the only player who looked likely (saka) was hauled off. Overall it’s a missed opportunity.

Gone quicker than Zak Crawley against an Aussie seamer.

Imo what makes it more frustrating is that we went out to the current world champions who looked distinctly average.

Literally their second string with Mbappe being completely out of the game.

We lost because we couldn't convert the peno, score that anything can happen... I don't think they was smarter first half they were ahead from a wonder strike and we was the better team second half and that's with the ref on there side.

It was a good strike first half, but thought Pickford was slow to get down to it. Shouldn’t be beaten from that distance, albeit hit it sweetly.

I’m not saying the ref was biased, but two heavyweight Europeans teams and they get a ref with no personality or presence. The lino’s were poor as well. England may well have lost with a top European ref, but the guy tonite gave our lads little protection and seemed to favour the opposition in key moments. It’s like the Uruguayan officials 12 years ago who disallowed Lampard’s goal. Inadequate at the job, but FIFA persevere with them.

They do though...all you here every tournament  is "Its fecking coming home".

It's never coming home...

They think they are better than they are...abit like Man U niwadays6

There are more English fans, that will take part of the singing & banter, doesn’t mean they are over arrogant or entitled.
The guys on the terraces have their hopes and high expectancy, but most don’t believe they are better than they are…

All sports, all fans will go OT when supporting, but that is what it is…

Games like this are decided by big game players. Giroud has proven himself time and time again to be one of those players. Kane has proven time and time again to not be despite superior talent to Giroud. despite the goal tallies. It isn't a fluke that this happens.
