Popular Post Finnegan Posted 12 June 2023 Popular Post Posted 12 June 2023 (edited) The problem with comparing him to Anthony Gordon is it overlooks the fact that Newcastle vastly overpaid. For a start, they could, they have fvck you money. For seconds, they wanted to prove they could bully a club of Everton's size out of their promising young players. But mostly, they just over estimated his ability based on a purple patch. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean the bar for what is a 50m footballer is now Anthony Gordon just as Ayoze Perez isn't forever the bar for 30m. Nobody is disputing that Barnes is worth more than Gordon, it's objectively, statistically obvious. But that doesn't guarantee we'll GET more. Plenty of centre backs have been sold for less than 80m who are better than Harry Maguire since we sold him to United. Sometimes the conditions are just better for you to do a deal. LCFCCHRIS Posted 12 June 2023 Posted 12 June 2023 Realistically we have to give a cut off date to the suitors, don’t step up by X date and we keep him or the price goes up 50%. As others have said, unless his wages are going to be a massive issue, it’s gotta be 35+million, especially regarding his goal contributions for the past few seasons.

Clubs will not pay that, especially when they know they’ll be able to easily turn his head as well. £30-£35m in my opinion. If we can afford it he’d be top of the list for players to keep for next season 3

Sadly transfers don't work like this. And definitely not so when we're a division below the potential suitors and the player wants to go.

Should we set a fee of say £55m and stipulate that if a bid is received, which meets that value and is received by a specific date (which allows us time to bring in an adequate replacement) then the player can speak to the enquiring club to thrash out a contract. Any bids outside of the timescale will not be acknowledged. So long as it is transparent to the player, his agent and the club seeking his services it should work within these constraints. Mahrez said that he was promised he could leave a season before he went, but I believe the fee that we wanted, was not met. So there are similar agreements out there.

All I'd caveat that with is Newcastle up to that point haven't got embroiled in paying extortionate transfer feed for players. Look what they were trying to muck about with Maddison last summer when we laughed them out of town. Gordon is a curious one because not only is he dog excrement but I think what drove Newcastle to pay over the going rate significantly was because Chelsea had a similar sized bid rejected previously and were supposedly willing to pay something daft like £60m but it never happened. If West Ham and Villa are both serious about their interest, both comfortably pay £30-40m for players so I'd expect Barnes fee to be up there with the going rate for a player whose goals and assists speak for themselves. Only reason I see us not getting such a fee is if for whatever reason there isn't the demand for him, which would be quite odd. English tax and all that.
MPH Posted 12 June 2023 Posted 12 June 2023 If Barnes in anyway stays, he’ll be red hot for the first few weeks and then the winter window will come and there’s bound to be 1-2 good clubs struggling- there always is.. and that’s when we will get a good offer for him.. 4

Don't blame the player, blame the hierarchy that allowed us to get in this mess. If Barnes goes Villa then it's a step up from where we are. He will have European football for a season at least and villa will again finish top half for the foreseeable future. Just accept that at the minute, and for quite a while it seems, villa are just streets ahead of us. We aren't as good as we were a couple of years ago. We aren't even as good as we were under Pearson before we went up. We are a club on the decline. It is what it is. 8 2
wardyfox86 Posted 12 June 2023 Posted 12 June 2023 I really feel like, of all the saleable assets, he should be the player we dig deep to try and keep hold of. He could be the difference if he's willing to fight for the cause. Failing that, loan him out for a season and hope we can bounce back. Losing players like him and replacing him with (most likely) loan signings just means we have to build all over again, if/when we go up.

They’ve earned their league position and they are going to reap the benefits with who they can attract because of it. We can’t say he’s a nailed on starter for. Champions league team so they are close to being the next best thing for him. 2

I recall Jack Butland being England No1 a few months before a world cup but Stoke got relegated and he never had a proper career after that. 1

LCFCJohn Posted 13 June 2023 Posted 13 June 2023 I could understand Barnes going to Villa more than Tielemans. Barnes has never done anything either by verbally saying or by running his contract down to suggest he ‘expected’ a top move or Champions League football. That’s not to say that privately it has not been his ambition. So if he moved to Villa because he wants to stay local or he is content with the level he has been at with us and Villa are at that same level, fair enough. It’s where we are both at as clubs now. Obviously in comparison, as has been covered on the Tielemans move, it seems more that he was not actually in the demand he thought and settled for a sideways move (sideways based on where we were at when he made that decision not now).

Unfortunately there is no cut off points when bids are made for a player. It would difficult to agree and possibly put off interested parties. Would you turn down a bid of 60 million if it came in late?
SB87_LCFC Posted 13 June 2023 Posted 13 June 2023 I think the big thing for us is how quickly we feel the need to sell, do we have funds to sign new players without having to take the first bid that comes in, historically we have held firm on player transfer fees, although on the flip of it we’ve also spent needless money on dog awful players so it will be interesting to see how this one pans out. I think the Villa move is more suited, his Mrs is pregnant so he isn’t going to want to be too far away. As I’ve mentioned before he asked to leave twice in the last three windows, maybe with Rodgers no longer here and us still in the premier league that stance may have changed but we are a championship club so naturally he wants out as he feels he’s too good for that level. I think we’re looking around £40m for him although from a selfish point of view I want the club to maximise player sales so the rebuild is better
