Very good player for the championship. Some need to give their head a wobble.

He could easily move to any of the promoted sides, and probably could have joined anywhere from 12th-20th in the top league. At this level he should be good.

At the same time, the ire he's drawing on here is for good reason. Spurs fans will tell you is that he is "Mr. Sideways passing." His job in seemingly any team is to recycle the ball and rarely makes progressive passes. Let me find some actual comments about the player from the Spurs forum:

"The fear in his play when receiving the ball in the middle. Never wants to take it and turn forward but always first touch backwards, he doesn't back himself."

"when he first came into the team he played an advanced role and was good to that, But then Poch tried to turn him into a DM he just is not powerful enough to do the DM role he also lacks the ability to sense danger so he is always running here and there instead of being close to the right place before/as the ball is being played"

"Winks is not up to the job at spurs. He gets extra hate because he symbolises where and when we started veering off course. He looked ok playing in a quality midfield and the club decided that he was good enough to carry the team after the quality players left. I'm fairly confident he will be moved on in the next window."

Like PEH, completely inconsistent and sloppy. Always good and bad

Winks is a player that is suited to possession based football... for a Championship nothing team

He didn't look good under Poch.
People were, as always, blinded by the fact he was an academy player.
Go back and watch what he actually did. Ignore the score of thee game and watch what he actually did.
He passes to the nearest person as quickly as he can. Usually sideways or backwards.

Whenever I've seen him play he reminds me a lot of what Mendy was like for us. Fairly solid and safe passing, but not someone who grabs control of the game. But the way the Man City apprentices set up their teams, they need someone to do the recycling job to keep the ball moving. Against deep blocks they try and move the ball from side to side to shift the block out of position so someone can attack the half-space to play the low cross for a cut-back goal.

For me this signing is on par with Coady, Cairney, etc. Will be good in this division but lacking in the Premier League. But we need a few players like this to help us get out. The biggest concern for me is that the Spurs fans say he is mentally weak and goes hiding when things are tough. That's exactly the culture that left us in this division in the first place...

We're going to need 8 or 9 signings. Not all of them are going to be top-class international quality players. Winks would be fine for what we need which is a more stable midfield.

I can see some value in winks. He isn't garbage.  I mean, he's 6 months older than Madison but has triple the amount of England caps.

What's not to like?? Pochettino rated him, managers since didn't as much.

Let's give the bloke a chance if he comes, he has solid pedigree.

Post on the Spurs forum indicates this is only "separate" to the Maddison deal to save us paying Norwich money.

We've got that 15% clause to pay Norwich on any profit we make on Maddison, we sell him for a bit cheaper & Spurs offset that from the money we pay for Winks? :dunno:

I would want the Winks deal to be done first as I would expect Levy to have his fingers crossed signing Maddison on the cheap.

Anyone want to know how bad he is just watch the video of his 33minute cameo v Everton that's online....he so bed that you just want to laugh

If we’re cherry picking videos maybe we should also find the one where he absolutely bossed Real Madrid’s midfield trio of Casimeiro, Kroos and Modric at 21 years old.

Not liking this due to financial reasons more than anything else. Surely we would be better bringing in someone who will be on lower wages. I’m also concerned about his mentality coming from Spurs and whether he’ll have the desire for the Championship.

If he doesn’t cost more than about £2mill on fee, no more than say 20k p/w wages (with incentive to increase on promotion) and does have a point to prove then ok.

Mate - no one is coming here on 20k/week wages unless they are an unproven kid

Have we ever been linked with a player that hasn’t been written off on foxestalk for 50 pages before they sign?!

No because its far easier to crap on everything and then just wait for a below par performance and then reel out the "told you so's" whilst dislocating your shoulder slapping yourself on your back

They probably should be given our position!

Probably exaggerated on the low side from me there I admit. But the point being not to blow the budgets, fees and wages, on him. He’d probably be decent if he wants it and hasn’t been poisoned by Spurs as I say, but signing players like this won’t get us as far with what we need. I get the old saying ‘quality over quantity’ though but we need to strike a balance.

I find it interesting those who think he fits perfectly in to a Maresca team. From what we do know about Maresca, he wants his midfielders to open up the game, not necessarily recycle the ball. Theoretically we will have a DCM who isn't expected to do that and 1 or 2 CM's that transition the ball very progressively but anyone who think Harry Winks is a combative and effe time defensive midfielder eat sandwiches with a knife and fork.

Think some need to remember what division we currently sit in

For the championship he's going to be a solid player

"Beggars can't be choosers" and all that

It's great signing young and hungry players, but you need a healthy balance of solid, experienced pros with leadership. That has been a massive factor in our downfall in my opinion. I have no idea if Winks is a leader though?

I think it's more over the years, I've had a smug chuckle at the likes of Norwich signing little boys like Billy Gilmore on the basis of a few games for Chelsea and thinking the step down would be the making of him. It never works. It's just such a boringly predictable equation to make.

Nearly good enough for Spurs = Must be good enough for championship.

If you look back to Winks’ earlier career he was a progressive midfielder always looking for the forward pass. It didn’t always come off but when it did he carved open defences.

Somewhere along the way Poch switched him to be a more of a CDM who played the simple passes, when really he should be used as a deep lying playmaker.

We aren’t gonna get £60 million, Spurs are rumoured around the £30 million mark, we paid around £20 Million for Maddison, 15% on top of that is £3 million. I'd say £36 million for Maddison get us clears £30 mil to us, an no more than £5 mil for winks.

I think he will play the Fernandinho / Rodri role.

TBH I would rather have kept Mendy to do the same thing.

Let's hope this is just a loan deal but with a year left on his £50k a week contract, it'll be a 4 year deal on a very competitive salary that's for sure.

I really wanted to see a statement of intent that we were serious about our rebuild, learn from.past failings. We need players who don't see Leicester as a step down or are only coming here because we are extremely generous in the wages we pay.

This is not a good sign.

Times I've seen him he hasn't been awful. Just steady but that is a premier league level not the championship.

Not Inspiring, but this could be a bit like Matt Oakley in the League 1 season.
