Martin finished 10th with Swansea. In the three seasons since he left they have not finished higher than that.

 

Win percentages are not "facts" they mean fvck all to judge a manger on as there are a range of different things to take into account such as number of games managed. I've just checked and Maresca hasthe highest win percentage of any Leicester City manager ever but he's not our greatest ever manager.

He's the wrong appointment, in the wrong league at the wrong time.  Virtually 100% of fans could see it.

 

He's going nowhere right now.  Yesterday was a terrible result and his managerial career has more than a sprinkling of these terrible results.

 

His last full season (Southampton 23/24) was successful but he had a bumpy start there.  He amassed 10 points from his first 4 games but then lost the next four consecutively, including a 5-0 defeat at Sunderland and a 4-1 home defeat to us.  So 10 points from 8 games.  We're 5 from 5 and there's an awful long way to go.  Like it or not, he's going to be given time.

 

My concern is that over 61 league games with Southampton and Rangers, the stand out statistic was the 22 game unbeaten run he went on with Southampton after those first 8 games.  16 wins, 6 draws.  9 clean sheets within them and a total of 13 goals conceded in the first 21 of those games.  The final win in that sequence was a 5-3 win against Huddersfield, so 16 goals conceded in 22 games.  After that, form dipped, but defensively, having been solid for so long, Southampton went on to concede 16 goals in their next 8 games.  Was this the moment that he was tactically sussed??  Interestingly, over the 61 league games across two clubs, outside of that 22 game purple patch, his teams kept just 5 other clean sheets (one with Rangers and one in the Prem with Southampton).  I'd love to know how many of the goals his teams have leaked have been as a direct result of being dispossessed in their own defensive third.

 

To be fair to him, I like what he's done behind the scenes and we've played some nice stuff in patches, but his tactical inflexibility is a major flaw and a huge red flag.  A bit of humility and going back to the drawing board could and would go a long way, but I fear his arrogant stubbornness will prevent that from happening.

 

Stay as we are and we'll end up mid-table.  Change and we could walk this league.

He needs to realise - for the sake of his own career as much as anything (from his perspective) - that he needs to be more adaptable.

 

If he fails here after failing at Rangers, two jobs that should be fairly straightforward, biggest clubs in their division, his career is over

You say this, I agree by the way, but football is such a “jobs for the boys”, that he doesn’t.

 

He’ll eventually leave Leicester but you can guarantee another club will take him on, probably at a far higher level than he should be at.

 

As soon as you’re on the merry go round, you’re laughing.

 

The only criteria for being a manager in 2026 is being an ex-player. There would be, imo, so many talented people who would do better than 90% of these donkeys.

 

It’s why managers can be so rigid and know better than anyone else, there is no consequence. If they fail they get a handsome payout followed by a new job whenever they fancy it.

I think that's the hope. A manager who can turn around a nosedive really does earn their stars - with fans and players. The managerial and mental skills acquired  while negotiating heavy turbulence are worth their weight in gold.

 

If - big if - he can adapt (and the friendlies suggested he does have a more pragmatic, direct side)  we'll have a manager on our hands.

 

If he chooses to roll the dice on his career on natural born losers Thomas & Bob plus  Souttar, Burns, McCarthy and Cullen - regardless of system - he'll fail.

I made this point last week. Since the play off win he's had 23 straight competitive defeats with Southampton , Rangers and us. Aside from the Notts cup win.

It’s the first away win of the season so we’ll take it, and hopefully we can kick on from this, but we won’t be able to unless there’s a massive improvement defensively. It’s been a problem for years now and it showed itself again today, giving up a 1-4 lead. At times it felt like that Southampton home game last season.

I blocked that Southampton game out of my brain because I didnt think it could get any worse.    How wrong I was.
