They're the most common, maybe not WWI actually but Vietnam and WWII are full of the usual tropes

How about films about those wars but not the usual? My choices would be:

 

Grave of the Fireflies - Haunting Ghibli animation about the firebombing of Tokyo during WWII

The Pianist - Jewish man’s battle to survive in Nazi Germany

Das Boot - WWII from the perspective of a German U-Boat 

The Boy in Striped Pyjamas - Concentration camp from 8 year old Nazi boy’s perspective.

We were Soldiers - Mel Gibson Vietnam one, but actually shows the perspective of the VC as well.

Downfall - Hitler’s bunker at the end (maker of memes).

Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - 1940’s British film about a man from the Boer war  to WWII.

Come and See - Disturbing Russian film about a young lad who resists the German invasion WWII.

Zulu - classic

Lord of War - Not a war film as such, but Nicholas Cage as an arms dealer; surprisingly good

Good Morning Vietnam - Robin Williams at his (second) finest.

Flame and Citron - Danish film about Danish resistance during WWII

American Sniper - Modern war story

Kingdom of Heaven - Crusade war film (extended version is much better)

Cold Mountain - US civil war film

‘71 - 70’s Northern Ireland film

Three Kings - Clooney gulf war film

Charlie Wilson’s War - political side of the covert Afghani war

 

And if you don’t like anything on there I can’t help you!!!
