Whst sort of standard of writer is there on GiveMeSport? Is it journalist / professional blogger / amateur enthusiast or a bit of a mix?

 

I only ask as I've seen a fellow Norn Irishman who was a self proclaimed 'journalist' on GiveMeSport who always gave it the big one on social media, loved slating the premier league mainly because it was the hipster thing to do.

I don’t know for certain, but I’d imagine it’s unpaid anmature stuff, students looking for work experience etc. 

 

I used to write for Shoot Magazine online back when I was a student, I was studying journalism at the time, and I just emailed the contact email address and they got back to me and said yeah you can do all the FA Cup previews for us for the season. The 3rd round took me about a week to do there was so many ****ing games . That gives you a bit of an idea of the barriers to entry, or lack of. I had pretty much zero experience at that point. 

 

Ron will be able to give you a better idea though I’d imagine.

Manini is pretty much spot on.

 

I was trying to get into writing a bit (posted a couple of blog posts on here), so I tried there. It’s unpaid initially and it sounds like you have to do a shit ton of pieces before you get a penny. Usually at the bottom of an article it will name the person who wrote it, along with their article. 

 

To get given a chace, you have to submit an article yourself and they’ll get someone to check it, basically deciding if you’re decent enough. I did about ten before I decided that it wasn’t worth my time. A lot of it was very Ladbible. 

 

Each article is overseen by a senior editor and some of the more experienced guys would write on football. I was being given a lot of Boxing, Tennis and F1. 

 

If the Northern Irish chap is a “junior contributor”, he’s not getting paid for it

Misuse of the idea of "freedom of speech." It's nearly always done to defend or legitimise hate. 

 

There are countries in the world without freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of religion. In these countries, your literal freedom, your liberty, can be taken away and you can be incarcerated or even killed for criticising a head of state, a deity, an ideology, etc. 

 

Australia is not one of these countries. 

 

Israel Folau is in hot water. Not for the first time, one of Australia's highest profile and most followed sports stars has taken to social media to tell the world that gay people are going to hell. The first time this happened, Rugby Australia drew enormous criticism for failing to punish him - you're entitled to your beliefs, Izzy, they said, but can you not plaster them all over social media? 

 

Alright, he says, until a year later when he decides to go again. Now he's getting sacked. 

 

What grinds my gears is that this is all being spoken of in terms of his "free speech", nobody is surpressing Folau's free speech, he isn't being arrested or silenced by THE MAN. Nobody is telling him what to believe, either, neither his government or his employer have told him his faith isn't acceptable. 

 

What they have told him is that broadcasting specifically discriminatory views that contradict their values off his incredibly actively followed social media accounts is something they can't tolerate and will contradict the terms of his contract. A contract he willingly signed that entitles him to about a million a year in pay as long as he agrees to conform to their ethical standards. 

 

If Izzy is free to express himself, and he is, then Rugby Australia has the freedom to choose how they want to react and who they want to employ and its a freedom they're exercising. There's no controversy, there's no scandal, there's no wrong doing and he won't win an employment tribunal. Playing international rugby for enormous sums of money isn't a basic human right that's being infringed, it's a privilege that Rugby Australia have every right to take away. 

 

He is 100% free to keep preaching on social media, nobody's gagging him, but there's consequences to being an arsehole and that's life. Sorry big man.
