England squad

Probably.

But one player that stands out personally is Lingard - every time I see him play, he's often very wasteful and not intelligent enough on the ball.

Can't understand his presence there, or in the Manchester United team tbh.

This does the best job I've seen of describing his presence I've seen:

Just literally had to Google Joe Gomez..just started to play for Liverpool..now I understand..

Played in many appearances in two years there, 15...

He was doing pretty well when he first signed for them then got injured and been out for a while

Although I hate to say it the focus should be on getting a shape that gets Alli linking with Kane as closely as they do for Spurs. Not sure if the 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 does that as he'll either be too far behind or too wide. There is a nucleus of fairly in form players which I'd like to see play the majority of both games but club politics make this unlikely. Finding a way to get Kane, Alli, Stirling and Rashford linking up and to see if Stones can settle down to the bread and butter of defending well would be a worthwhile exercise after what have been some really awful performances by the team. Around that nucleus give Gomes and Winks a game, Maguire too but try to get some partnerships / relationships and shape working at the top end.

It's a good point that what the squad lacks is any real pedigree at International level by its individuals very few of them have any memorable exciting moments or heroic achievements but some of them have the potential to if they're allowed to show some character. If we have to sit through Dire, sorry Dier, passing sideways to Henderson, back to Cahill, up to Dier, back to Cahill etc and they're not encouraged to do any other by Southgate then the future is indeed even bleaker than it looks.

I wish we'd bin 4-2-3-1 altogether to be honest.

I believe he's going 3-5-2

Really excited to see how Harry Winks does for England, he's keeping Dembele out the Spurs side so hopefully he can replicate his current form for club for his country! Looks first decent centre midfielder since the lot from the 90s and early 00s

He's gobshite

I actually think that side set up in the correct way is quite good, the issue being we'll never set up like that or play to our strengths with it.

Cahill will start despite being awful all season, Henderson will start for some unknown reason and Rashford will undoubtedly be the forced in to a system that doesn't suit him because 'he's as good as Owen was at his age' ....

Playing that side could provide solidity in tough games with Vardy and Rashford to bring pace off the bench

Someone needs to put Jessie Lingard's agent in charge of the Brexit negotiations. Someone like Gray has shown more promise in the first half against Everton than Lingard has done all season. I am actually pleasantly surprised that he's dropped players like Oxlade-Chamberlain; someone who I'd genuinely rather drop at CM in place of Andy King - it does show a slight evolution in the thinking of an England manager.

He made some good noises in the press conference!

Interested to see if he actually follows through on any of it.

Essentially wants a back three with every centre back able to play from back

Recalled Young as he can play both wings (deserved)

Dropped smalling because he can't pass

For a back three to work though he needs to take the shackles off midfield, Dier and Henderson CANNOT play in the same team unless Dier is in the back three. I don't want Henderson anywhere near the squad but southgate loves him... so with that being the case it HAS to be Henderson and a forward thinking midfielder.

I'd like this...

Butland

Maguire

Jones

Stones

Walker

Rose

Henderson (don't want him but not going to change!)

Alli

Sterling

Kane

Vardy/Rashford

Maybe you don't watch football then

He's a shit Eric Dier, sideways or backwards the ball goes. Only been playing ahead of Dembele because he's only just come back from injury, his career trajectory will be the same as Tom Carroll

I read a Southgate quote this morning which is encouraging for Maguire. He was talking about Smalling being omitted and said that although he plays at a high level for his club he is looking for different types of players, ones who can play out of defence which is what Maguire, Stones and to a degree Jones do. The only problem with having CB's who are comfortable on the ball is that Henderson and Dier will keep passing back to them instead of looking forward!

You are entitled to your opinion even if it is very strange.Don't think anyone can deny the potential of Winks and to write him off at this stage is foolhardy.

players who actually have been playing well?

Laschelles at Newcastle, Dunk at Brighton.

Gray, Lewis Cook & Calvert-Lewin all deserve a spot over Lotfus-Cheek as well.

Gray??? He has had 1 decent game!

if that gets you in the England squad ?

Well worth watching. Passages like 'constantly annoying', 'energy' and 'the sort of player that top squads need to oil the system' suggest Mourinho likes to play him in an Okazaki role. Ability on the ball doesn't win him a place in the first team, but his overall contribution to the team does. Would have liked a few actual clips from matches to back up the analysis.

STONES IS A LIABILITY - i never seen him play well.

He’s been brilliant this season. I wasn’t a fan at all but defensively he’s been colossal.

Alli ruled out.

Chance for Gray?

Possible. Southgate was at the game yesterday and he's the senior player of the under 21s now.
