Ric Flair Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 It is frustrating, we need to play as competitively as possible against the likes of Germany and Brazil to prepare for next summer but these wet fannies drop out at the earliest opportunity. I hope they all get banned from playing in the 1st round of PL matches after the international break. Hopefully Vardy plays a good chunk of at least one of these games and shows Southgate he can always be relied upon.

Butland Stones Jones Maguire Walker Young Dier Livermore Rashford Abraham Vardy That team would probably finish about 8th in the premier league.

Unless we're suddenly going to start playing through balls or balls into the Channel he's going to have no affect though is he? We've switched to 3-4-3 to make Kane and Alli combo work better Which is fine... it just wont suit JV... Having said that the tempo ALWAYS increases when he comes on as a sub.

Haha I actually think Vardy can play that way now, he's got much better at attacking crosses and looking to poach rather than having to rely on fast counter attacks where he gets in behind defenses.

Back in the day you'd look at the England team and wish your club had players of that stature - now I'm grateful that around half the team play for other clubs
volpeazzurro Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 Over the years I've eventually got to the state that I don't give a stuff about England, mainly due to the poor management and lack of ambition even when we had a decent squad of players to pick from. The way players are dropping out tends to suggest that, like me and a growing band of supporters from other clubs, it's club football at this time of the year that comes first. When was the last time we had a decent World Cup? The next two in Russia and the desert, give me a break. The Premiership and Champions League for me out-trump dull irrelevant International football which for me just serves to frustrate me watching my club play. Yawn.
Super_horns Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 Jack Cork has been called up now. There was talk of Cleverley being called up but thought that was just our fans being hopefuly/biased...but he's probably next on the list!
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 I'm expecting a phone call from Gareth Southgate any minute now. Might go and clean my old New Balance boots in readiness.
Wymsey Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 It seems like the top clubs can decide whether certain players can play or not at certain times, making these friendlies sort of both pointless but under-valued.

Vardy dropped out of the friendlies last month with the exact same sort of 'carefully managed injury'...(as did Drinky multiple times last season)... I don't think we can complain

Wymsey Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 England to wear blue kit for 'commercial' reasons. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5056021/England-wear-BLUE-away-kit-against-Germany.html

Dan Posted 7 November 2017 Posted 7 November 2017 It's sad isn't it really. The birthplace of football and the national team and fans are in a massive vicious cycle which I see no way out of.

As far as I'm concerned the future has never looks brighter for the English national team... we have just won about every youth tournament going. Not just won them but battered the opposition. The next 5-15 years will be the glory days in English football. its not even really about having the right management, if the players are good enough they will do the business Also, these games are friendlys. You think the Germans and Brazil will bring their best players? No chance. Friendlys are all commercial these day. However, I have always said they should be for the 'fringe' players looking to break into the team, so in this scenario I can't fault Southgate. Im not his biggest fan but what's the point of playing the 'big' players? We know they're going to the World Cup, fair play to the England's set up I say... good test for players like Vardy and Maguire to stake a claim!!
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 8 November 2017 Posted 8 November 2017 However, I have always said they should be for the 'fringe' players looking to break into the teamLet's revisit this next July, and see how many minutes these 'fringe' players play in the World Cup. My bet is it won't be many, if any at all.

nnfox Posted 8 November 2017 Posted 8 November 2017 The Premier League has become too powerful. The wages are too high. When players give away their England match fees, there is literally no point in playing for England and risk getting injured. I would like to see a set up like in rugby, where playing for the national team is considered the pinnacle of the sport. Players boost their pay considerably through enhanced sponsorhip deals and league fixtures continue without international breaks. It will never happen in football though. Or maybe the players can't stand Southgate.
ALC Fox Posted 8 November 2017 Posted 8 November 2017 With all the withdrawals, do some of these replacements really have much of a chance of going to Russia in the summer? The first choice players will all make themselves available for the tournament with little niggles and knocks. So, wouldn't it actually be more appropriate to reward some of the players who represented the U21, U20 or U17 teams so brilliantly recently? If we're talking natural progression from the youth teams to the seniors, wouldn't a decent performance in a senior friendly from say Rhian Brewster perhaps give him more chance of playing first team football for his club? I mean, Southgate is going to learn nothing from calling up Jack Cork. It's a pointless exercise. So why not chuck one or two of the young lads in?

As soon as these lads hit U21 level they are greeted by Aidy ****ing Boothroyd and Gareth Southgate and all of that disappears. Until changes are made at the higher levels we wont make the most of that talent.
boots60 Posted 8 November 2017 Posted 8 November 2017 What with all the players currently in the treatment room, but only until next weekend when a miraculous recovery is made, I feel it is time for my England call up. Unlike the current "stars" I would not be at all afraid of facing the Germans & Brazilians. I'm on the blower to Gareth now.
