Surely he’s been terribly advised unless he thinks he can do them for constructive dismissal or something similar ...... I suspect they could have terminated his contract anyway so will argue that they didn’t need to make the offer of him staying on a reduced wage ....

never liked him for some reason .....

To me this feels like they sacked the most expendiable player but let the other two, who were even more culpable, off.

Fair play to sack Keogh but surely the other two should have been sacked too?

Derby come out of this looking terrible.

The club statement mentioned ‘Gross Misconduct’.

Him being captain and allowing the others to drive would have been gross negligence. Citing the reason as misconduct suggests it’s something he has actually done, rather than allowed to happen. There were a lot of rumours flying around and if they were found to be true, it’s a sackable offence in many professions.

Even if all 3 (or more) were found to have been guilty of this offence, sacking Keogh seems sensible. His contract would’ve been about up by the time he’d played again. They’ll say he should know better and his position in the club was untenable.

With the other two, there are 3 scenarios:

1 - Slap on the wrist, being young and misguided. Sell them on when they can, makes sense from a business point of view.

2 - Wait until the legal hearings are done and then either sack or sell.

3 - Face the backlash and keep them at the club. They’re not bad players.

its simple!

ONE player is unable to perform their work duties.
ONE player has been let go.

Can someone please name another player that injured themselves outside of work through their own stupidity and has an expected return date after their current contract ends and is still employed please.

No chance here. Derby have completely fell off in this instance

I think the sticking point might be that he wasn’t driving, and loads of footballers have had non football related injuries, It will be interesting to see how this goes.

"The club will not tolerate any of its players or staff behaving in a manner which puts themselves, their colleagues, and members of the general public at risk of injury or worse, or which brings the club into disrepute" - Lawrence starts five of the six games since the crash, Bennett plays in two of them. Seem to be doing a good enough job of tolerating it when it's coming from players who can potentially still make them some money

Not to mention signing Rooney in January, who picked up a DUI in the US last year. No doubt he’ll get the armband at some point. I can’t see how Keogh wouldn’t win a legal challenge. He may be captain, but he can’t be held accountable for letting Lawrence and Bennett drive. They are responsible for that, not their former captain. It smacks of hypocrisy and from the outside, Derby look a complete mess. The statement is laughable. Unless there are other incidents that night that we don’t know about, they’ve made a complete balls-up of it

They've sacked Keogh because he's old, knackered, and is worth pretty much nothing. Money comes before principles as always in this case. They aren't going to throw Bennett and Lawrence away just for some other team to pick them up on a free.
