Too many midfielders?

Ship Mendy back to France, Kingy & James to lower Prem/upper Championship, put Albrighton back on the wing where he belongs and you’ve fixed your problem

I didn't say he had the passing range for the role. he does what he can for his ability, short passes and looks to recycle the play sideways and back.

Yes, but it still doesn't qualify him as DLP. Modric, Pirlo, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Kroos are a few typical examples of a DLP. Mendy's a defensive midfielder, plays as such and nothing more.

If king and james are staying just for laughs they need moving off playing staff (lets face it they are never playing for us again) into some technical roll that dosent affect FFP

Please explain to me how King and James affect FFP.

That's my point, we have 4 good players there, all being paid,

That's a problem for the accountant.

Mendy and Silva could yet still go, King and James have got to be well used to the idea of being reserves here by now and I doubt either cause disruption.

Short term cost control was abolished in July.

Agreed but they still make an impact on long term cost control. Our last set of club accounts showed a profit of £1m for the year.

I believe that surplus players are probably costing us in the region of 300k a week. That makes a big difference to your profit margins.

Interesting comment from Brodge in today's presser: "We have a lot of defensive midfielders, but actually as an offensive midfielder we only had one of those - in Youri Tielemans”

He was speaking about Praet when he said this which could suggest two things:

- Praet has been signed to play an offensive role so I doubt we'll see him in the DM position despite some speculation to the contrary.

- We might see more of Maddison played further forward if he's thought of as an attacker rather than a midfielder. So this could mean him playing off the left where some say he's been less effective, or through the middle if we employ the much discussed diamond shape.

I think we'll see Praet starting a lot more games than I'd originally anticipated and we'll almost certainly be giving the diamond shape a few more run outs. I think we have the personnel for it but it really doesn't fill me with confidence due to the garbage performances it's churned out every time we've used it in the last decade.

I'll go out on a limb and say we will pay off King and James to let them join someone on a free transfer.

Silva will be sold, there's still 3 weeks on the Euro Window, imagine he will leave Euro Deadline day, similarly wouldn't be surprised to see Mendy go on loan again.

Still means neither can join a Championship side until January.any free agents have to be free agents before the transfer window closes to join outside of it. Stuck with them unless they go to League One or Leuven

We will start the game 4-4-2 diamond Sunday. It’s obvious to me that Brendan wants Pereira and Chilly to hug the touchline and provide the width whilst Tielemans/Maddison/Praet have the freedom to interchange positions in a Number 8/Number 10 hybrid role.

Brendan won’t be playing a diamond on Sunday. Wolves play 3 at the back with wing backs - we would get taken apart out wide.

We played 4-3-3 against Atalanta - a game specifically organised to prepare us for Wolves, as they also play 3 at the back.

Don’t get me wrong, we will play the midfield diamond a lot this season (Brendan said in his Q&A with the fans last season that the 4-4-2 diamond is his preferred formation) but you won’t be seeing it on Sunday against Wolves, not from the start anyway.

  • Wilf Ndidi

  • James Maddison
  • Leshabela
  • Marc Albrighton

So who out of this bunch won't actually make the 25 man squad (out tomorrow?). Surely at least King and James won't. We need to cut some sort of deal with James to get rid if we can. He won't make this year's squad or next year's either in all likelihood. He's little more than an expensive charity case at this point.

A nice problem to have, especially in centre midfield where we've often been down to the bare bones, but do we have too many to realistically keep happy and offer game time?

Off the top of my head - we have the following players for a maximum of 3 places:

  • Wilf Ndidi
  • Hamza
  • Papy Mendy
  • Matty James
  • Andy King
  • Adrien Silva
  • Youri Tielemans
  • Dan Amartey
  • Dennis Praet
  • James Maddison
  • Leshabela
  • Marc Albrighton

That's not including Ghezzal, Gray and Barnes who can be seen as midfielders too.

So, how is Brendan going to keep this bunch happy? Surely we have to offload Kingy, James and Silva as a minimum and maybe Mendy too?

The list will get shorter soon. Albrighton doesn't belong on a list with mostly central midfielders.

I suppose King will be let go, same for James (or else a final loan spell somewhere else). Silva to be sold (back to Monaco?). Leshabela should be going out on loan, I think.

Future for Mendy? Fighting with Hamza and Amartey for that CDM spot behind Ndidi in the pecking order. But one of them will probably have to go out on loan, as well. Probably Amartey, who needs to get back to full fitness. Sheffield United and Fulham were interested recently.

Albrighton is a winger. James won't make the squad, neither will Leshabela (unless we sell more than I expect and have an extra spot). And I'd expect us to still move on at least one more, I think Mendy (or Silva or King). Amartey is also probably more of 5th choice CB. That leaves:

DM = Ndidi/Hamza(/Amartey)

#8 = Tielemans/Praet/Silva

#10 = Maddison(/Barnes)/King.

Not counting the players that are primarily for other positions or King as he is unlikely to make the bench but is good squad depth for the cups, then that is 6 players competing for 3 positions. And that is fine as you normally want 2 players for every position.

Just a random thought whilst I look over this thread, but how many actual out and out strikers do we have? Vardy, Nacho?

Play them as defenders? Maybe one in goal? There's 12 there, so a whole team of midfielders. Then the real question is (which you seem to be avoiding) "in a team of 11 from 12 midfielders, who do you leave out?"
