But that’s my point, trying to find diamonds in the rough for a club like Bournemouth is a tough job... one that he was horrible at. But that skill doesn’t effect the England job. He’s selecting from very high profile players.

Some managers are better at just coaching players and that’s what you need for the England job. It’s also the same reason why those that are excellent in the transfer marker often make poor international managers.

You pick a young manager like Eddie and he could really grow with the team. The big worry with him would be how his teams defend but personally I’d like to take a gamble.

Realistically who could england appoint of a high pedigree? They are always going to have some type of flaw. We haven’t had a good manager since Robson

Whether you are buying players or just selecting them, it's still part of the talent evaluation process, and it's an important part of football management (be it club or international level). It shows Howe has a particular weakness here and probably wouldn't be much of an improvement on Southgate, if at all.

I don't mind Mount making the squad but he's treated like a key player and I just don't really see how that's come to be. Southgate's been a hypocrite - as somebody correctly pointed out earlier in the thread how he said Maddison had to prove himself in the top flight and whatnot for a year before he got a call up, yet Mount waltzes past him after two Premier League games. The fact it took this long for Grealish to get a competitive start as well is ridiculous, he was one of our only bright sparks yesterday as well which is no surprise. Love him or hate him he's a seriously dangerous player. I hate facing him for Villa.

Southgate's in this position where the vast majority know that he's not really up to it now, he's been found out but as usual those in charge will let him piss away the next tournament, similar to the way they did Hodgson in Euro 2016, wouldn't be surprised to see us have a similarly awful campaign.

On current If England picked thier strongest side Maddison would probably be in the first 14-15 players but would not be a starter. Grealish is ahead of him at the minute. Maguire is probably worth his place too though that sums up the defence,

That said it was interesting watch Maguire score against us last Thursday. Obviously decking a cop in Greece is more forgivable than attending a Casino after 1 AM.

I'm not even sure Robson was much cop.

Failed to qualify for 84 euros. Garbage in the first two group games in 86. An unmitigated disaster in 88 euros. 90 the players basically told him the best formation and we were v lucky to scrape past both Belgium and Cameroon

He still chose those players to be part of his team what makes you think he would choose the better players for England?

There is a big difference to trying to find players for Bournemouth and selecting for the national side. Much like its very different signing players for top 6 clubs than it is for lower half prem teams. You have to take gambles if you want to bridge the gap, something we are great at but it can easily go wrong. ( Musa, slimani, silva)

It is well known who the best talents for england are, your average joe at the pub could tell you who to call up. It is much more about how you coach them and make them work as a unit. This is something he would be good at.  I think Wilder is currently more likely at the moment but Im not sure 1 season is enough to prove himself. But if he gets it together he, again would be a reasonable choice based on how he get the most out of  a squad.

Ranieri, is also a manager like this imo. Give him a good squad and he will do well, ask him to rebuild and youre in big trouble.

I don't think Maddison should be starting but he's made a rod for his own back with some of his justification. The latter being a perfect example of Southgate's hypocrisy.

I've tried to get away from this whole big 6 favouritism but it really is impossible, there's no way else you can justify this fascination with fitting Mount in no matter what. If Dier played for us he wouldn't be near the XI.

I was thinking about this subject- would Tielemans be first choice for England under Southgate?- and decided he wouldn't. Would Praet get in the squad?

Hahahahaa nor would Castagne, Tielemans gets in nearly every midfield in the world right now but Southgate wouldn't go near him, far too technical.

According to the news on BBC this morning, and they said this at least twice, Leicester City FORWARD Youri Tielesmans scored.

So don't worry, the media haven't twigged on to him yet.

I doubt it. The favouritism does exist, it's been that way for a long time, Grealish's form for a bigger club would've had him starting every game.

If grealish doesn’t move he will find it hard to get many starts at the euros, so I agree. Yet he is possibly our most creative player and certainly most confident.

It is a massive problem with the whole England setup, and one that has been around since I have been watching football.

Belgium are the no 1 team in the world and they are more than willing to start/play players like castagne, tielemans and praet.

There are times you just have to sit back and be amazed we had him play for us in the first place, let alone that we kept him for more than 1 season...

I wouldn’t agree with this as I think we help make him into the player he is today . When he first joined us you could see he had talent but you wouldn’t  have thought he’d turn out to be the player he is today when we first signed him .

Some of the things he does, you can't teach or coach.

No doubt we helped him develop and gave him the stage, but he's a footballing genius and I feel there's a lot more to come if he applies himself.
