Absolute banger!

Let me tell you, you were not alone in thinking that. Look at the reaction of some of the fans, they don't celebrate till it's gone in because no-one was expecting a goal like that! I thought he was playing a terribly overhit through ball and had wasted good quality possession in midfield.

In my defence I was about 13 at the time but I remember thinking he had totally cocked up a ball to Fryatt. I'm still reminded of what I said to this day.

I'm the opposite, see a long raking pass, declare 'great ball' because I've seen the intended target, only for the ball to sail out of play 20 yards adrift.

I'm guilty of that as well and I think it's probably a scar from what Gudjonsson did.

I was sat behind the goal for that and was celebrating after it went in and my dad sat next to me was tucking into his pie and missed it wondered what had happened.

Now the pie gets hit out his hand by Kasper's kicks

To be fair from about 2005-2008 making an assumption that we’d wasted midfield possession was the most logical thing to do

Why Youri Tielemans is the exception in Brendan Rodgers' Leicester City plan

The Belgian midfielder has started every Premier League and Europa League fixture so far this campaign with Rodgers describing him as vital to the club's success

Youri Tielemans will be the exception to Brendan Rodgers’ rotation policy with the Belgian midfielder “better in rhythm” and “vital” to Leicester City’s success.

With 11 games played this season, Tielemans is the only outfield player to start all of City’s Premier League and Europa League fixtures so far.

The City boss is aware of the need to rest players as the club compete on two fronts, with two games a week between now and Christmas, and has shuffled his pack with regularity.

However, Tielemans has so far kept his place, and that is partly because Rodgers believes he is a rare kind of player whose best form comes when he plays every match.

Rodgers also said that the 23-year-old has a unique set of skills within the City squad in his ability to play forward passes from a deep midfield position.

“I think he’s such an important player for us, Youri,” said Rodgers. “He now understands what I want from him having worked with me for a period of time.

“Most of the players we have in that position are defensive types. Papy has done incredibly since he came into the team, Wilf’s injured, and Hamza. I don’t like to play two defensive types together.

“He’s that pure midfield player, Youri, where he is just playing slightly deeper but he can still influence the game going forward with his range of passing, and influence the game from behind taking it off our defensive players.

“For someone so young, his experience and communication in the game has been vital for us.

“You get certain players who are better in rhythm, where if you actually take them out for a game or rest them for too many games, they lose their rhythm and I would see Youri as one of those. When he’s in form and when he’s playing to a level, he can sustain that.

“There might be the odd occasion. I took him off against Braga to give him some breathing space and allow his legs to recover.

“He’s a very important player for us and I’ve been delighted with his form.”

The hope, then, is that he doesn’t suffer burnout later in the season. International football may also contribute to that, with Tielemans playing twice for Belgium in October and called up to the squad for three games in November.

“I also have to think that some of these guys may go away and play two or three international games,” Rodgers added.

“I hope they don’t play three but they might play two.”

Brendan said this ‘Rhythm’ thing last season - eg. YT played at burton and Luton - and the player did burn out ......unless he picked up a knock I forgot about

I dont get this rhythm thing twice a week  .....why play him every midweek game ?  If we don’t have a midweek game then he wouldn’t be playing ?  surely he can miss a EL fixture and not suffer any loss of rhythm ?

Aye. I think just as important is playing regular full games, certainly starting and completing 80+ minutes. Coming on as a sub with 30 mins or less to go does nothing for a player's 'rhythm'

He has the ability to ping those balls from deep like no one else in our squad like the one for Under at Arsenal but Maddison has the ability to drive at players and create space for forwards, Praet is very good at linking up with forwards and setting up attacks so I do feel a little concerned when we insist that he is integral because whilst he's a top class player, he will need a rest during the season.

I wonder if Praet would be an able deputy in that role.

Rhythm is a mystery.

Youve got to move your body. Move your body to the rhythm of the game.

I don’t think anyone comes near Youri in terms of vision. That ball to under for Vardy Rex was absolute porn. I know we had Praet against Brentford but Youri, for me, is head and shoulders above all in this. He’s also displaying a lot of discipline and his tracking back has improved massively. For me he is the next club Captain

His ball in the game against Brentford last season was one of the best defence splitting passes I've ever seen so there is a good argument for him. I just don't see it as consistently as Tielemans imo.

Is there an argument to say he plays better without Maddison? X

For sure and has been raised and discussed for a while. Madders is such a ball hogger such that when Madders was also sitting deeper Tielemans got much less of the ball and control of the midfield. I know people like Madders but these are little things that people also need to be aware of that make or break team chemistry. If Madders can produce the sort of precision long through balls like Tielemans can regularly dish up (eg. find me an example where Madders made a pass like Tielemans made to Under at Arsenal - answer: none), then it is all good. But because Madders cannot do that, yet he hogs the ball, it means the team suffers because the guy that can is not being allowed as much freedom to do that. So to me, Madders cannot play next to Tielemans in that deep midfield role unless Madders change style and can quickly lay it off like Mendy does when he goes into that deeper territory. (Yet, when he gets down there, does a few nice turns and looking good, people applaud him for being “creative” (still not sure where this label first came from) instead of seeing through it to the downside of that which is that often playing quick / simple passes is better like Mendy and Praet do).

I don't know if these 2 examples qualify, but Sheff Utd away last season and the pass to Under at Leeds...

Reading between the lines, I think BR was just saying how important he is to the team and that he needs to have him in the team as much as possible while he can rotate others - fan and team management.

I didnt realise we had midfield possession 05-08 seemed like the defence bypassed them at every available opportunity lol

I'm surprised he doesn't consider Praet, KDH or Maddison as adequate replacements for Tielemans in games where we are able to rest the latter.

I think BR is more saying that Tielemans is more unique in the team compared to others such that he is less replaceable/rotable in his role at the minute, though I think Praet or even KDH can play that role. Madders as has been well discussed is better suited further up the pitch.
