Aidy Boothroyd has received a major boost ahead of next month’s Under 21 European Championship, with Gareth Southgate giving him access to some of England’s finest young players.

 

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, Mason Greenwood, Jude Bellingham and Harvey Barnes have all been selected by Southgate over the past 12 months but England’s head coach is happy for them to drop down to the Under 21s next month.

The quintet all featured for Boothroyd through the qualification process and they are all in consideration to be included in the squad for the tournament which begins next month in Slovenia.

Basically, the group stage of the tournament is during the next international break in March. The knock out games are during the summer.

This happened with Taylor didn’t it? After he ****ed us over he ended up coaching the young lions for years and years, I think he is still involved to some degree too.

And Boothroyd being England under 21 coach is one of the biggest scams going in football right now.

Just further evidence that to get an international career in England you have to be at a preferred club. 

 

I cannot imagine any other nation bumping a player like Barnes to the U21s.

Agree. Would prefer them to rest rather than travelling about to sit on the bench during games whilst training with a bunch of big 6 players who'll be tapping them up to join their clubs. Tbh, I'll be shocked if either gets called up anyway. Southgate doesn't play with a 10 and Maddison can't play as a wide forward, as we know from painful experience. Grealish, Foden and Mount can play in wide positions, as of course can Sterling, Sancho, Rashford, etc. That's 6 players who will be ahead of Barnes and Maddison in Southgate's eyes.

He was U21s manager before he managed us.

Fake news.

 

He was born 9 December 1997. To be eligible for this tournament you have to have been born on or after 1 January 1998.
