And I mean specifically with regard to the war in Ukraine, something that is very delicately balanced, and something where intelligence (yes I know, I mean military intelligence) and key decisions are being held at the top, where a wrong move based on coming in green could prove disastrous, and with the other primary military power in Western Europe in danger of electing a Putin-sympathising fascist in coming days? I don’t like what Boris has done in any way. All things being even, he should resign - and if not resign, get the push from his own MPs. But things are not even. Is this not a very, very bad time to do it? I think there should be high enough standards that if he's committed a resign-able offence, timing doesn't come into it. It then becomes objective in the future as to whether it's the "right time" to resign. He could very easily resign but stay in post for a period of time that allows a leadership contest to take place, and an effective handover of all duties including Ukraine. 4

Popular Post Sampson Posted 12 April 2022 Popular Post Posted 12 April 2022 (edited) Blair and Brown both left during the Afghan War, Chamberlain of course left during WW2 and Asquith left halfway through WW1. Would you be making the same argument if there was an election due? That we shouldn’t have an election due to the potential changing hands in intelligence? If that’s the crux of the argument that it’s because of intelligence changing hands, then the reason for changing doesn’t matter so much. I hardly think the best way to show solidarity to a democracy being invaded by an authoritarian regime is to show that it doesn’t matter if our leaders allegedly openly lie to parliament and the public and they can do that just fine and stay in power. Is this not a very, very bad time to do it? There’ll always be some sort of existential threat which could be justified to never changing leader in that case. “You can’t sack me now because of the climate emergency/new covid variant/ pothole crises etc). Maybe February 24th wouldn’t have been a good time to change leader, but we know now that the Ukraine war is going to be a messy Donbas situation for the foreseeable weeks/months, it’s unlikely that anything will change that. So I really don’t think it would make much difference. Also Macron will win, unless the majority of Melenchon’s voters switch the Le Pen, which is just not going to happen. Popular Post StanSP Posted 12 April 2022 Popular Post Posted 12 April 2022 Also in the camp that thinks the cowardly fvcks won't resign for breaking the rules. If its in the rules they should resign for breaking the law, then they'll go against that and stay in position without doing the honourable thing and leaving post. It's infuriating they will get away with this. 5

Jimothy Posted 12 April 2022 Posted 12 April 2022 As our resident poll monkey has disappeared without trace thought it might be worth sharing this one. A majority of people think he should resign. That's within hours of the news breaking, so I would imagine it'll increase over the next few days.

Number 6 Posted 12 April 2022 Posted 12 April 2022 (edited) Torn on whether I want him to stay or go. On the one hand he's a lying, self-serving asshole who cares nothing for anyone else and embarrasses the county. On the other hand he could stay a bit longer and bring the whole nasty party to its knees. Edited 12 April 2022 by Number 6 Spelling 1
Nick Posted 12 April 2022 Posted 12 April 2022 What’s the alternative to Boris? Not that I’ve ever thought he’s the material to represent anything bar a poor comedy show, who else in the Conservative party might be his successor? Truss, Javid, Patel, Gove, Mogg? I mean unless I’ve missed a candidate somewhere which the British public could even have a chance of being taken seriously on a world or national stage, I’m a bit lost? Genuine question.

Liz Truss is favourite with the bookies with Tom Tugendhat close behind. Rishi's odds have fallen off a cliff. Like you've said though, there is no clear successor. I think Tugendhat has come across reasonably well recently (for a Tory), but that's only really been in the context of what's happening in Ukraine. Alan Curbishley is 3rd favourite

Strictly speaking, only mammals have anuses. Birds, reptiles and amphibians all have cloacas for expelling waste.
