At this point only older generations who are nostalgia merchants who think Maradona or Pele are the greatest. Even if Messi doesn't win the WC he's still the GOAT.

So, anyone who is old enough to have seen Maradona is a ‘nostalgia merchant’. Anyone not old enough, won’t be able to have a true opinion on them/dismiss them regardless.

With that logic, in 30 years time, the next ‘GOAT’ will automatically become better than Messi.

Whilst it would be nice to see Morocco win the WC. I sort of hope France beat them, because I think France v Argentina might actually provide an entertaining final for once.

Kind of feeling the same but concerned France might actually win it

Vardy's the only one I'm slightly hesitant to place him above but I must admit that might be a tad bias

Lets see Messi do it with a ball made of clay and on a bobbly pitch, until then I'm not having it

Let’s see him do it in the prem for a start

Lets see Maradona or Pele do it against professional, modern defenders that don't smoke fifty a day, drink six pints after every match and are actually coached by competent modern coaches.

Can't speak on Pele but Maradona played in the 1980s. People who watched him are still alive. Lineker played against him and thinks Messi is the greatest. Messi has broken a million records. Both the stats and the eye test says Messi is better.

Keepers as well. One thing that always stands out to me when watching highlights from back in the day is just how shit the goalkeeping tends to be.

And that’s why it’s impossible to say who the GOAT is because you can’t compare generations. It’s fine to say Messi is the greatest of this generation but I think it’s pointless trying to prove who’s the best ever. Just too many variables.

Bad argument

Ig they were around today, they would benefit from todays training and coaching - they would have been even better

And let’s see Messi or Ronaldo do it on muddy pitches with heavy balls and defenders trying to break their legs. Works both ways.

Pele played against plumbers and electricians. He's an important figure in football and have an iconic place in the game but Brazil won 3 World Cups partly because they had so many legendary players.

Anyone saying that Messi isn't the greatest ever is looking for attention.

10 La Ligas, 4 UCLs, 7 Balon d'Ors, 6 European golden shoes, a Copa America and probably a World Cup. All while having to share the stage with Ronaldo.

Coupled with more than 700 goals, 400 odd assists and 1000 games.

🐐

Trophies to justify players is such a bad argument. It doesn’t make sense.

Personal achievements are fine but even then some awards are newer anyway.
