Well that's not what he said at all.

I'm old enough to remember Maradona, and if I have to rank them, I think Messi's better. Maradona did some phenomenal things; Messi's done a wider range of phenomenal things for longer.

 

But seriously, let's just enjoy good players whenever and wherever we have them. We don't have to compare them all the time!

Spot on.

Modern day footballers are extreme athletes way fitter,but boots,balls,pitches are far superior these days.Could you perform to that level on a mud heap or could Pele perform extreme skills on carpet like pitches.We will never know and that’s why I like to say a generation.

I will probably never see a player like Messi again in my lifetime.

You mean like Maradona was for the goal against England in the 86 World Cup?

I’m firmly in the Messi camp, but Ronaldo was a phenomenon. Just an insane winner. His goals and trophies match up against Messi. As I say, I believe Messi to be comfortably the best, but if someone had a gun against my head and the only thing that could save my life would be a player of my choosing scoring a last minute penalty I’d probably plump for Ronaldo. He was a machine.

In 82 Maradona got so fed up with being kicked he took retribution into his own hands and got sent off himself against Brazil. Pele got kicked out the 66 tournament. Messi is the GOAT imo but that's because he is afforded the protection to be the GOAT.

I love that you can basically tell how old someone is by who they think the GOAT is.

 

For example, Raj is pretty ancient but he's not @Alf Bentley levels of decrepit (Alf was probably around for Pele's debut or something.)
