He is the wrong fit for the way Rodger’s likes to play, Rob Tanner tweeted that he even mentioned this to Rodger’s at the time and found the signing bizarre, not because he though Vestegaard a bad player, just the wrong type of player. Good post. And rewind back there were quite a lot on here happy with the signing, hindsight is a wonderful thing, we were desperate at the time and after players with Premiership experience to bolster the squad. It’s worked out badly for all involved (not taking into account the salary he’s taking)

Such a blatantly bad piece of business if ever there was one. If us non-experts can spot a Turkey, why was a highly paid Manager and his best mate allowed to have the Club done up like a kipper???? 35 minutes ago, Wasyls Pec Deck said: Also I know a lot of Southampton fans who couldn’t believe their luck. What I hadn't taken into account was the fact that quite remarkably, he doesn't have the ability to win many headers, alongside the fact that he seemingly has absolutely zero desire to win it. Big mistake and an awful panic buy - honestly think our fortunes would be so different if we'd had the foresight to sign someone like Ahmedhodzic who can actually defend on the front foot. 2

I have a clear memory of him chuckling and shaking his head in astonishment. The phrase 'turning circle of a cargo tanker' was used. I had a bad feeling about it after that. 1 3

It took until the third page until someone brought up how slow he is. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As a fan, I was over the moon when we paid £30m for Islam Slimani. I thought Ahmed Musa was going to be as good as Vardy and was wondering why everyone else wasn't buying speedy CFs. I thought Luis Hernandez was going to fetch millions and millions on sell on and captain Spain at the World Cup. Ok, the last one was a bit of a exaggeration. The point is, fans on signings will provide very little insight. There are some (including on this forum) who are very well versed in the talents of footballers the world over - I look out for posts of such people whenever we are linked with players. But generally, a fans opinion shouldn't be used as a benchmark for a good signing. The issue here is, Vestegaard, had he signed for say Burnley last year or even our side back in 15/16 (deep line, counter attack) I think he would've been a relative success. However, for the way we play or want to play (we do very little playing at the moment) he so far from a good signing its crazy that we went for it. Ok, he knew Kasper but the mistake of our manager, his Head of Recruitment at the time and the DOF has me flabbergasted. Out of 3, how did not one pick up on the blatantly obvious issue with this signing. Vestegaard is not a Fofana type top defender but he isnt as ridiculously bad as we have made him look. He is so far from being suited to our style its had us questioning whether he should be a footballer full stop. Within weeks of signing him, you could tell those highly paid senior individuals realised he was not suited for us - that's a player who'd played against us AND had played in the PL for a few years. Its not the first time that we've made absolute blunders in the market, with the same DOF we couldnt have cocked up the 2016 summer window anymore. I, personally can still understand the Bertrand signing - that going wrong is hindsight. Seemed a perfect deal. We were losing a very experienced, influential LB and replacing him with an equally experienced left back. This one though, it wouldnt be wrong to questions peoples roles as a result. 5

I think most were happy we'd actually quickly due to a late transfer of Fofana, and presumed we actually had a plan to fit him in our style or our style around him. Not that we'd just carry on playing a high line with an oil tanker at centre back. 3
waylander Posted 24 January 2023 Posted 24 January 2023 Apparently if he’s not sold in this window he is being converted into a centre forward like walshy only better. Itk 👍

Claridge Posted 24 January 2023 Posted 24 January 2023 Wish we did play a high line. Saturday we were camped on our own 18 yd box. Gods knows why we bought Daka on, would of been better bringing on Vestegarg
JimJams Posted 24 January 2023 Posted 24 January 2023 I thought that was the point in us buying Vestegaard. To bring on to defend a lead. What an investment.
Sly Posted 25 January 2023 Posted 25 January 2023 This signing has always felt a little weird. Almost like the recruitment purchased him, then the coach thought “WTF, I’m not playing him”. 1
Sly Posted 25 January 2023 Posted 25 January 2023 Of all the players we’ve been linked to sending to Turkey, I can only think of Ghezzel and Diabate that have gone?

Berlin or Leicester? let's hope the big guy is tempted but could they afford his wages?
FoxinNotts Posted 30 January 2023 Posted 30 January 2023 All the best Jannick, thanks for everything mate
fazzyfox Posted 30 January 2023 Posted 30 January 2023 To anybody saying "I'll drive him there myself", hope you've got a retractable roof or a big Lorry. Mini drivers would need a shoe horn to get him in and a tin opener to get him out. 2
