I agree, I said that myself. The reaction would also be very different if it was a loan or if there was an indication that it would be very cheap. As with a lot of these transfer links, the people that defend them get caught up looking at a player out of context and thinking "he's not terrible, why is everyone over reacting?" But the context here is that I just can't imagine a scenario where Winks represents good value for money for us in a summer where the pressure is on for us to make some of the best decisions we possibly can in the transfer market if we're going to reinvigorate the club. 2

Good for the level we are at. We need beige when our current midfield can’t pass, track runners, chase a player 2 metres away, control the ball first time, score or use their brain under low or high pressure situations.
Lako42 Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 Be interesting to see how many pages this one gets to. We never sign them.
Stopharage Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 I think he’ll be decent for us. He’s the type of player who does the graft, ball retention and passing that gets the best out of the players around him. When he was playing regularly for Spurs he did that a lot, seems like a selfless footballer, who puts the needs of the team over making himself look good. Pep teams have always had at least one player like this, be it Fernandinho or Rodri. He doesn’t get anywhere near them but has the skills to play that role. We don’t know yet what set up Maresca will go for but Winks has the capabilities to play that deep-lying midfielder role. He’s not the exciting signing that loads want but he helps us create the platform that those exciting players will all need to excel. Seems pretty level headed and will be good to have in the dressing room. 1
FoxOfMelton Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 I think some people need to wake up to the level we are at. He'd be one of the best midfielders in the Championship. Are people expecting us to sign Bellingham or? My only concern about Winks would be his wages and his injury record. 3

An Sionnach Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 A bit early for him to step down to the championship I would have thought his ambitions remain PL. 1

Fairly recent England international too (still not quite sure how), but I’m sure he still has higher ambitions than the Championship.

Dahnsouff Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 I view this more as a interesting take on Maresca, not negative nor positive, but a genuine curiosity Unless of course, sneaky Brendan Jon has been whispering in his earhole

It’s a bit bland but if the price and wages are right. I don't get all this it's a bit bland, the amount of mistakes we made in the DM role last season Ndidi has been shocking if we can get him out the door for £15 mil and get Winks in for £5 mil with Mendys wage gone aswell, the wage bill goes down and we have gained £10 mil. 1
coolhandfox Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 Totally love for Mendy on this forum, Winks is a similar player so don't get the hate. 1
Haywood_6 Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 He'd be one of the best midfielders in the championship. He's not the most exciting signing but his all round ability is good. He can keep possession, he can see passes but also seems prepared to work hard and be disciplined. If he can perform consistently and give us a 7/10 each week. He'll be perfect in my opinion. 2
StonyFox Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 I think this would be a decent signing. We are lacking in centre midfield and he brings experience and quality. He's not exciting but having him keeping us ticking in midfield would be a good start to the rebuild.

He was a top player for us and if you can’t see that then you really know nothing about football. My original post stands. 2

Probably because we could have offered Mendy a 1 year extension instead of signing Winks, which is a fair criticism. FYI, I think Winks is a good signing for a Championship Club chasing promotion, which is what we are.

He would need to accept a drop in wages. If we do get him we should sell Maddison to Newcastle. He would be joining a Championship club, his salary demands would have to reflect that this is the sort of level that he will be playing at soon. He'll be cheap as well as surplus at Spurs with one year left, should be able to pick him up for £2-3m maybe especially if we're the only real interest. I've obviously heard his name but have never particularly observed him, happy enough with this depending on if Marescu wants this type of player. His career is on a downward trend from 17 PL starts in 2018, 26 PL starts in 2019 and 10 England caps. You would like to think with that pedigree and age he should be a stand out player in the Championship but some players can look good at 21-24 and hopeless at 27+ for whatever reason.

It gets everyone worried because this is the sort lazy signing we’ve made in the last three year. The fact he couldn’t make an impact at a very bad Sampdoria team doesn’t speak great. This is bang on. I've been far more derogatory about the potential signing but this sums up the dilemma. He doesn't come without risks for what we'll have to pay. He's one who's very similar to some of our players who may have been ruined by injuries. This is what gripes me most, we have a horrendous injury issue and history of overpaying for players and at the first opportunity we seemingly have learnt nothing.
TommyK Posted 27 June 2023 Posted 27 June 2023 Maybe i'm not realistic, but you don't get out of the Championship and progress by buying Championship quality players. We need players with a high ceiling than Winks. 1

Yep, that's all very well if you're Real Madrid but if we sign players of that profile we're getting proven mediocrity. Vestergaard, Perez, Ward, Ghezzal and Praet all fit that and they cost £80m between them, didn't trouble the first XI by and large and little resale value.
