Alternative 16/17 season...

Recommended Posts

We would have finished 7th or 8th in my opinion, even with kante we would have struggled to balance champions league football with domestic. Also don't underestimate just how bad that summers transfer business was whilst all the rest improved. We might have won a cup though as a team with vardy, Kante and Mahrez could have beaten anyone on their day.

The general consensus from players and staff who've been interviewed since seems to be that a lot of things Ranieri "let go" in the first season because they "were working" he wanted to change in the second.

Tactics, training, nutrition, sports psychology, etc.

I love Ranieri but it does seem like he was destined to get the second season wrong regardless of personnel.

Ranieri dismantled the best backroom staff and club principal, which was envied world wide..

That's why he goes down as both The best ever, and the worst ever, because he didn't really understand & know even realise, it was that excellent grouping & combination that made us the perfect onfield-off-field solutions & he took us back to 1960s Italian ideas, where modern  Italians would of even laughed...

.He murdered what we were and was too baffled to know or realise what he had done.,then agreeing to stay with the same staff & took a top AM in Andy king to an under pressure do it by yourself DM.

We could never replace Kante, hurt everybody involved around Leicester.but Ranieri thought we could play the same without  replacing somehow that Void..he suddenly then became that "really" icon we feared..

No top coach clever  reaction of Shankley,Wenger Paisly,,Mourhino, Mercer.even Mancini ilk..!!

He became for me the Marmite of marmite coaches..but that one year belonged to Him..He gave us the fan that dream of dreams. For that we loved him..Rodgers had the 2nd best manager crown but that love he never really commanded.

I don't want to derail the thread here, but there was one manager who won the FA Cup and a couple of years later had allowed his ego to almost single handedly bring to an end the greatest period of the club's history, ever.

This ain't even close.

2016-17:
After LCFC secured their second title win in a row and narrowly lost their Champions League semi-final, Manchester City recruit the man credited with creating the "Greatest Sporting Story In History" - Jon Rudkin.

2023:
Fast forward to 2023 and Leicester have become a major European force in football, while Manchester City, having lost the services of Pep Guardiola after Rudkin joined, now languish in the Championship and are managed by Sean Dyche.

There was a lot of parallels to last season in that when a professional footballer lacks that absolute desire to win every game then things can go badly every quick. Readjusting from winning the league to suddenly turning up to battle for the difference between 15th and 8th is a difficult thing for people on 80k a week.

We were destined for relegation that season. It annoyed the hell out of me that the fixed media narrative was 'if they hadn't won the league he'd have kept his job'. They absolutely hung on as long as they could despite the unbelievably bad football. Unlike this season though, they made a brave decision and it worked. From that period up until Vichai's death we suddenly become the enemies of the footballing world. Something that get's forgotten about when talking about this period of our history. But despite the majority consensus being proved completely wrong, it's still rewritten over as us stabbing him in the back and the wrong decision.

We still had a stupid preseason, Vardy barely scored until Ranieri was sacked. We'd have finished lower midtable still but the mood would have been awful surrounding the club. The best thing would have been sacking Ranieri and putting Shakespeare on an interim contract then appointing a different manager. We appointed Puel because he was available, he did some important work but we could have rebuilt earlier with Vardy and Mahrez at their peaks. Knowing the club we probably would have needed up with a worse manager than Rodgers so maybe it worked out for the best i.e we actually won a trophy. Lots of clubs peak (Wolves, Spurs, Watford, Leeds, Southampton) and never win one.

Probably equally rubbish.

The defence that was so good sitting deep and protecting in 15/16, for whatever reason, returned to type the following season and were back to championship level - harsh, i know but true.  Would Kante have made any difference? - maybe, but not enough, certainly not in the league.

The Champions League, where the 15/16 mojo seemed to linger, might have been different, we might have had just that little bit more solidity and control that finally caught up with us.

One point doesn't close the other one out...

Plus just before Ranieri was dismissed a few posters left the forum, because the dismantling of the B.room staff..took us into an unnecessary rebuild..Puel

And the B.room staff character and set up, made us what we were, and was the platform from Pearson that gave Us & Ranieri the title..
