All well-taken goals but the finishes for his second and fourth are fantastic on what is nominally his weaker foot. If I remember correctly he usually played in a front two for Preston and it looks like this was his first time doing so for Stoke with Gallagher starting alongside him.

Averaged just under 1 in 2 for half a season at Preston. We barely played him.

A full season at Stoke is going to be significant for him kicking on. Whilst 20+ goals would hopefully prime him to develop in to a PL striker, we might have to swap places with him as we come down and a newly promoted wide snaps him up 😂

Sod that! No full season in Stoke! Bring him back in January!

This will end up being a Harvey Barnes style springboard for him. He should have been straight in that Puel side ahead of Ghezzal and Diabate instead of being loaned out to West Brom.

Thought I’d check out the Fruitcake forum to see what the Stokies made of Cannon’s performance tonight.  Having read 10 pages, I still have absolutely no idea. But I could now submit a peer-reviewed thesis as to why Mike Pejic should never be allowed to do radio commentary ever again.

Actually watched the game, it was a weird one. Pompey were dreadful and both teams gave up for the last 30mins. Loads of fans left after 80mins (familiar!) as it’d become so drab!

As for Cannon, obviously his finishing was on point, he strikes them so cleanly. Keeper was poor for his first I thought. His all round game was ok I’d say, nothing mor and he looked like he was carrying an injury to his lower back/hamstring (couldn’t tell). Not wanting to piss on his fire and 4 goals is worth praising but there’s a massive gap from a Prem defence to what Pompey put up last night. Should give him a platform to kick start his season though.

Really pleased for him. Yes Portsmouth look like they are going back down but to score 4 is still an achievement. Particularly given our current side struggle to get a shot on target against League 2 opposition!

Range of finishes on both feet there too. Free kick, composed pen but even those two from open play showing his ability to pull off the last man, Vardy-esk but also the ability to take the ball under his control and finish within the area (albeit not from the most crowded area on account of Pompeys defending.

Premier League ability of not is still unclear but I can’t believe anyone doubts he can do it in the Championship.

Also he didn’t have a worthwhile pre-season with us so hardly surprising he has taken a couple of games looking rusty for Stoke.

When did he say that?

He said before the Spurs game ‘Jamie made himself available because we didn’t have any fit strikers’

Corrected himself later in another interview by saying ‘any fit SENIOR strikers’

Cannon didn’t get anywhere near enough opportunities at Leicester

I love how nobody knew him but we're pleased we signed him, then never rated him (as I recall people saying he's not better than Daka etc), not bothered he went out on loan and hasn't done anything at Stoke but suddenly scores 4 goals against one of the worse teams in the league and everybody loves him again.

Only football fans.

Stoke have got Swansea, Sheffield United and Norwich this month. Those are bigger tests than Portsmouth, granted you can only score what's put out in front of you.
