Yes was brilliant when he started. Didn’t he have a bad foot injury which seriously hampered his pace?

I clearly remember the collective wailing and gnashing of teeth on here when we couldn't tie him down to a new contract. We felt we were missing out on the next Yaya Touré. He's now usually sub - albeit one who gets regular minutes - for Moreirense, who are 11th in Primeira Liga. Not a bad way to make a living, but way below the level we expected.

Don't think it helped him at all when the paper talk (probably fuelled by his agent) linked him to Man United and Arsenal. Everything seemed to trail off for him after that.

To be fair I did once say things got messy for Mattock in a nightclub. He might be referring to that.

Had a very solid career at Championship and Premier League level. Not exactly an absolute flop like some on here.

 

Went to school with the guy and I didn't even think he was the best footballer in the class. Mad how these things pan out. Also the fact he's retired now makes me feel old.

Majority of these were just players with decent potential but few of them would have fallen into the wonderkid category (whereas we have a few at the moment).

 

Mattock (scum), Chambers and maybe Ndukwu where they were really hyped up and probably should have done a lot more with their careers.

Joe Dodoo after that debut v Bury...barely played again for us and recently released by Solihull Moors.
