Not the best but honourable mention to Gary Charles, a Rolls Royce of a right back who went on to have a great career before tougher times when he retired.

Cross signed permanently didn’t he? Was with us for 18 months, Newells strike partner. But then Pleat inexplicably sold him on and of course his first goal for Port Vale was against us.

Yes, you are quite right. 58 games for us.

Amazing how many strikers Pleat got through who had some pedigree. Newell he inherited (tho coincidentally helped build his career prior to us) Cross, Wayne Clarke, Jimmy Quinn (strange one that, division top scorer but he barely played him) David Lowe, Rooster Russell, David Kelly, Ashley Ward.

I don't count players that initially joined on loan but then signed permanently, so I'm going for Kevin Campbell, with an honorary mention to Mike Galloway who I remember being great for the short time he was with us (maybe just a 1 month loan?).

Tielemans was brilliant in his loan spell. Made the Puel side look good briefly - outstanding when Rodgers took over

We also had some guy Harry something or other, but don’t think he ever achieved anything…

Mark Davies was outstanding, shouldn't have been anywhere near League One

I remember Mark Davies coming in and brightening up a team chock full of crap and then being sold by the parent club (Wolves) after he'd been with us for what seemed no time at all (was it at the end of the same window we got him in ?)

Full of crap?

Gerry Daly came in 1983 and we lost once in the last 19 games or so.

Come the next season he wasn’t here of course - we’ve very sporadically been a well run club

I thought of Gerry Daly immediately when I saw this thread - great player

Huth and Izzett in later years :D

I’m going for players here that were solely loanees and didn’t become permanent.

Mark Davies. He was class for us and we were all devastated when he left.

Tom Cleverley was really enjoyable to watch as well. Had a soft spot for Kerrea Gilbert too. What happened to him by the way?

Absolutely Mark Davies. Shone like a beacon (then turned into a twat when he reckoned Bolton? Were a bigger club than us!).

I thought it was the year we went down from the championship but if not he still stood out as a cut above what we then had

He isn't the best with how many we've had since but the player that always comes to mind here is Mark Davies. I was absolutely gutted when we lost him. He was 8/10 every game he played.

Quality midfielder, great vision and range of passing, unlocked the front three of Linekar, Lynex and Smith. Literally helped drag us up the table to promotion.

I was thinking of two of these Mark Davies and Gilbert .From memory  Gilbert had a right engine on him and flew up and down the pitch .

Huth wins, easy. I'm not old enough to remember Muzzy on loan, only as one of ours.

Going back a little further, I was really really impressed with Kyle Naughton when he was here. That Sven squad was such a mess but he stood out, until Simpson came along he was the best right back I'd personally seen for us.

The Yak can’t be far away think it was something like 11 or 12 goals in 20 games. Great return that. Kyle Naughton was up there for me.

Its a well worn trope on here, but all Yak did was score goals. His work rate and impact in general play was practically nil.
