Confirmed: Ranieri new manager

Exactly and this is what I think people don't understand. We aren't a Chelsea or a Juventus who already have world class players and are expected to challenge for the league.

People say look at his record look at sven's record and look what he did for us. Since Calgari in 1988 this is probably the smallest team he's managed.

He was at Chelsea pre-Abramovich, he had John Terry, Gianfranco Zola (who Ranieri himself discovered earlier in his career) and Marcel Desailly when he joined, but not anyone else who today we would have called world class in their day.

Abramovich came in and Ranieri was replaced by Mourinho within a year, despite finishing second. Before Abramovic he only made one big(ish) money signing, and that was Frank lampard for £11m, not a bad decision. He also bought in Cech.

I really want him to do well here.

I can't help but think though that this is going to be another Sven scenario. It comes across as though the other candidates for the job turned us down and the owners have gone with their last choice. Having said that though Ranieri has experience at the top and has managed in this league before for a long period of time.

I hope i'm proved wrong.

Everyone seems to know he wasn't the no 1 target. Apparently that was o'neil. What if he had stalled in negotiations and we used the MON approach to flush him out? JUST LIKE NIGEL'S SACKING, WE WILL NEVER KNOW

I know we've just appointed a new manager and I don't particularly want to get bogged down in this. But it does need to be said that you're wrong.

How do you know this? It is mere supposition, twinned with disappointment at Pearson leaving.

I have stated elsewhere, that we will now enjoy a successful era under Ranieri, but that is also supposition on my part.

Supposition is not fact.

Pleased with this on first instinct.  Of the managers we were linked with I'd say he's easily the best of the realistic choices, a better choice than MON dare I say it.

Well, good luck to him.

Frankly I think we do better with a rising manager with something to prove, and he has been sacked a spectacular number of times, but who knows? But I'm not optimistic.

I'm not overly disappointed as it could have been much worse (Allardyce, Pulis types), but it confirms what I thought that we don't have any people in our club knowledgeable enough on football to make a real positive move. I wonder if he was even on the list before declaring an interest a week ago?

Can't see this ending well myself, but hopefully proves me wrong. His signings/squad management will be a telling factor as to whether he succeeds here or not.

Not very keen on this, the man was desperate and actually asked us to hire him without prior interest. The owners have messed up big time and have just gone for the easy, short termist option because they couldn't get who they actually wanted.

Like any situation I'm liable to be won over and eat my words. I don't think I will, though.

Seriously, we have attracted a manager of proven ability and high stature, the kind of which we would previously only have dreamed of and some people aren't happy.

Given who we could have ended up with I am more than happy.

At the very least, get behind the team... including the manager and give the man a chance before judging him.

Finally some sense - the mind boggles. I'm sick of the football dinosaur comments, he's managed some enormous clubs and amazing players, and given where we've been in recent years this is a massive coup.

My reaction at the moment is 'at least we've got someone'.

Not overly excited yet but he'll get my time and support and lets hope this isn't another Sven

General consensus amongst other fans is that we are nailed on for relegation. Ranieri has such an unfounded reputation, record is better than his status suggests.

Newcastle appointed Steve mcclaren FFS and wasn't greeted with such negativity on the football world.

He then signed Crespo, Veron , Mutu and Jesper Gronkear for Abramovich. And spent 120/30 million.

Because he has a stature in the game and managed top European clubs, the owners have got it wrong?

He might not be the right fit for us, only time will tell.. But his building jobs with Monaco, Juventus and Parma suggest he can progress clubs. Maybe with money, but we have plenty of it and I couldn't care if he spends £50m if we get into the top half.

I don't feel confident he will bring in some young promising players. It's the problem I have with older managers, they are more likely to bring in players they have worked with before. They don't take into account anything else, like the exiting squad or if they will want to live here or how they have aged. I don't have a problem with him spending £50m either, it's not my money. We only need one or two good players to make a big difference to out squad. I would have been more reassuring if he came in when the window was closed. He would have to get to know the players and we could see what kind of managerial skills he has, before the wallet comes out. I'm preying he isn't like Sven, but there are a hell of a lot of similarities.

TC made a good point on SSN. At Chelsea he had/bought players that were capable of challenging for the league, which he doesn't have here...

Why is that a good quote????

He had players capable of winning the league and finished second.

He'll be signing players capable of challenging for top 10 here and you know what ... if he finishes 11th I won't see it as too much of a disaster.

Very true, but I suppose McClaren is Newcastles level so wasn't seen has such a shock...

Makelele. Best signing.

On paper arguably the best available man for the job. Experience, credibility, international background and outlook - at least we're having a go and I wish him the very best. Just a few too many club's have parted company with him for me to feel comfortable but it's the appointment I'd have gone with given the apparent options. The guy clearly wanted the job, and that's a big plus. But what an exciting opportunity both for him and our players.
