frany104 Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 A very good signing for us. Young and hungry is what we need. Now for a CAM who can help attack and were developing into a very good side.

At 27 he should be coming into his prime and if he left United he'd have a point to prove. It's not same as when O'Shea or Brown left when they were 30-31 and likely past their best. My only reservation about Smalling would be his ability (or lack of) to stay fit.
Babylon Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Hopefully this will be a signal of lessons learnt from last summer.
mozartfox Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Open top bus parade for Rudders 'if' his gets this one over the line. Hughes and Maguires combined ages not much more than Wes's.
CloudFox Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Be chuffed to bits if this goes through! Think we've kept an eye on him since he was at Sheffield United, and he's got better and better every season from what I've seen of him. £16m is pretty decent for a quality young English CB these days too.

If he can push and develop like the Chester fans/media think he's capable of, then we could potentially have that other young CB replacement already sorted. Could be some very clever future planning going on with the two signings.
SheppyFox Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Hope this is announced soon and we can crack on buying more

Callabinho Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Really impressed....and lower than the reported £30! £16 is an absolute steal!
StriderHiryu Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Excellent piece of business at a good price given the current market. Keane would have been ideal, but for the price being quoted for him, I think we've got the better deal here. Do we consider ourselves to be done for CB's now? Huth and Morgan may be old but they will still get a number of games. Benny has also done a decent job when called upon. Hopefully the next player in is Gylfi!!!
MC Prussian Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 What I like the most is that we're doing transfers early - and if Maguire acts as an indication where we're going with new players in, as well as transferring players like Musa for good money away from LCFC, we'll be looking at a super summer. We need more of these young and hungry players, not at least looking ahead at our established players leaving the stage at some point in the near future. Looking forward to the rest of the transfer window!
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 Maguire seems like he'd be a great signing and fit right in with our team and style of play! Next up - a CAM please! Though Id take James / Ndidid / Drinky next season if all 3 can stay fit

I would say so; I'd be happy with any of the current 3 alongside Maguire next season. CBs can play until well in their 30s as long as they have some energy/pace alongside them. Huth and Maguire this season, then bring in another next summer.
maddog Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 The deal could still fall through guys. Don't count your chickens yet until Harry is at the training ground holding a King Power shirt and pretending to smile
foxes21 Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 after this signing we need: RB - A young understudy to Simpson or an attack minded alternative. CM - Someone that can challenge both DD/Ndidi. James & King as back up. CAM - Upgrade on Okazaki.

Captain... Posted 14 June 2017 Posted 14 June 2017 If this goes through and then we sign Smalling it really would be an indication that Huth and Morgan are considered over the hill, we can't sign Smalling and not make him first choice we also have to give Maguire game time, even in a back 3 that would only leave space for one of Huth or Morgan. I wonder how Huth and Morgan would feel being squad players at 33? There is still some life left in those legs, but will either be fit enough to manage a full season as first choice in the prem? I don't think we will go for Smalling unless it is clear that Huth or Morgan won't be able to manage a full season or we are serious about a back 3, but then we have Fuchs to consider. We don't normally give more than 4 spaces in the 25 man squad to CBs: Maguire, Huth, Morgan, Benny with Hughes in the development squad Amartey and Fuchs able to cover and play in a back 3.

I guess the reason to add another would be if we're going to three at the back on a regular basis, then you'd want five.
