Couldn’t agree more about the Euros.Less is more.Having 6 groups of 4 with a potential 3 going through just encourages draws and dour football.A whole lot of unnecessary tripe just to eliminate 8 teams.Which is why I love the current World Cup format.I think their is enough quality to have it at 32 teams. It fits perfectly into a 5 week period. As ever though, some numpty wants to ruin it.

Euro 2016 was crap until the quarterfinals. Portugal qualifying from their group with three draws and going on to win it just underlines your point, and teams like Hungary and Albania just weren't good enough to be there. Finland probably won't do much better next year.

Getting to the World Cup, 32 teams does provide the perfect format but there's still a lot of dross. Panama had no place being there in 2018 and were probably on a par with Montenegro or Belarus. Short of having more teams from Europe or South America, which FIFA would never countenance, it's difficult to see how they can sort it.

48 teams will be awful - a group game between Slovenia and Thailand isn't going to do anything to enhance the quality of the tournament and add more pointless filler before France tonk Kenya 7-0.

I looked into the 48 team WC a bit further after playing it out on FM.

To avoid third place qualifiers from the groups, it's three team groups of which two qualify. Therefore it's very likely that we will have final group games of teams already qualified playing second XIs playing out a dead rubber.

UEFA will remain with 16 spots. But South America gets 6 and North America gets 6 as well. Africa (9) and Asia (8). I think you could make a good case for the African countries getting additional spots - but I find it unreal that S.A. will have 60% of its entries qualifying and we will have some rubbish such as Panama springing up again.

Panama were North America (CONCACAF).

South American countries are generally better though so I think 6 is fair enough in an expanded World Cup

According to FIFA World Rankings:

The 16th best team in Europe is Austria.

The 6th best South American county is Peru

The 6th best North American country is El Salvador

The 9th best African country is Mali

The 8th beat Asian country is UAE

Not being harsh but Austria and Peru are currently far better teams than the rest of those mentioned.

I don't get it. Surely if you stick a camera in front of anybody they will act stupid and say stupid things on purpose.

It's beyond the pale. As a society we now feel 8 entertainment as watching people watching television.

Horrendous, boring, and lazy.

1984 warned of this kind of mental anaesthetic in the participation vidiscreen. This is us submitting willingly to it.

I know Panama were CONCACAF - they are more likely to qualify as we’ve gone from 3 to 6 teams there.

I think the South American numbers are disproportionate to amount of teams in their confederation. If they have 6, Europe should have 20 or so

I don't think gogglebox is necessarily meant to be funny. It's normal people talking about what they're watching on telly, like we all do. Occasionally somebody says something funny.

All the Gogglebox haters will be glued to Sky Sports watching Jeff and the boys watching football in a few weeks :D

Six teams from CONCACAF is insane. USA, Mexico and Costa Rica are fair enough, but you'll get dross like Panama, El Salvador and Curaçao turning up as well to get slapped by moderate European teams.

You would expect, say, the Republic of Ireland to destroy El Salvador. For that reason, it'd be a better spectacle for teams like Scotland, Norway and Turkey to be there than Iraq, Burkina Faso and Canada. With the best will in the world, the World Cup is not the Olympic Games where those watching will applaud a plucky amateur carrying on gamely despite getting absolutely annihilated.

Also, the blackout posts are doing my head in. Is it really about raising awareness or is it about aligning your personal brand with the latest trend?

I've wanted to joke all day that Instagram is broken and won't load any pictures, but i'll probably be slaughtered by the egotists you mentioned above

(admittedly it probably wouldn't even get noticed, but still)

Black lives matter is a crappy strap line. Positive though it obviously is, it implies it was ever up for debate.

Do black lives matter? Yes/No.

Of course they bloody do, it gives too much credit to racists to even acknowledge it as a statement.

Lead with stop being racist idiots instead.

Also, the blackout posts are doing my head in. Is it really about raising awareness or is it about aligning your personal brand with the latest trend?

Yeah I agree. I've also seen posts like 'all the blackout posts on my Instagram shows I'm friends with the right people'

So if I decide to not follow trend does that automatically label me as a racist. I never do post any of these things. Like the Pray for Paris, or Manchester thing etc. Unless I'm going to physically do something that might make even the slightest of changes it just feels pointless

The social media blackouts are just cheap platitudes to make people feel like they’re doing something. The protesting in the US needs to be organised and unified to demand certain policy changes like the creation of an independent police investigatory body or better training. White gen Z kids in the UK aren’t helping by posting a black square. I’ve also seen a few people posting “it’s not enough to be not racist, you have to be actively anti-racist” and the extent of their actions has been putting that on their stories.

On the other hand, I’ve seen plenty of lads talking about how many white people the US police kill and FBI crime stats which are totally missing the point, I don’t understand how you can witness some of these videos and not think that US cops have a problem institutional racism

Yes, but they also seem to have a wider problem of use of inappropriate force.

I'm just honest enough with myself that I'm probably not going to do anything about it. Neither are the vast majority making these blackout posts, but at least it looks like they care, right?

Just don't know how so many people can be so dishonest with themselves.

It is a very weird situation. I now feel guilty for going on Instagram and seeing loads of black boxes knowing that I haven’t posted a picture of a black box. I know that what is happening over in America is wrong but it doesn’t feel right to think I will make a difference by posting a black square.

To be fair the WC has always had at least one or two countries that would struggle in League one. They beat who was put in front of them to qualify so fair enough. Not perfect but the whole world gets a chance.Wasn’t it the Zairean keeper who didn’t even have any gloves? The World rankings are farcical anyway.Switzerland played the system, and Poland are/were way ahead of their true postion.Just two examples that that format isn’t perfect either.Again couldn’t agree more about expanding to 48😡I get upset thinking about it.Im not a massive international football fan.The WC group stages are brilliant though.

You should not feel guilty for it.

There's no obligation to post a black square or a #blackoutTuesday post.

Not posting it is not equal to not caring about it.

Let’s just have everyone in that qualifies with a FIFA ranking above “X”. Straight knock out!

Group stages I like, but there was something off about a tournament that had Panama in it and not Italy. If you must expand it, have European sides. Scotland would be more welcome than some of these sides.

Plus, you don't actually have to be public with your opinion. Do it in private conversation if you prefer.

Not everything has to be broadcast, not publicly commenting doesn't mean you agree with the offenders, social media has done a lot of good but it also seems to be used as a weapon against somebody if they don't join in.
