Maybe a subtle tweak to get him more involved? Him and Chilwell have been pushing forwards a lot more. Actually in the last few games we are starting to develop a threat down both flanks. Before I felt like we over relied upon Ricardo, but now both Chilwell and Barnes are stepping up. Barnes has the most assists in the team with 4. Perhaps we've tweaked it because teams are focusing / doubling up on right hand side after watching us play and not expecting our left side to create much... but now we can create on both sides! So we stay one step ahead of the game in this way. My feeling is that they were always supposed to push on more, but being younger players have taken a bit of time to get used to it. In Barnes case, he is playing with a lot more confidence and I think he believes in his own game a lot more. In recent weeks he has become the most improved player in the team for me. Not scoring goals yet but he's creating so much it arguably doesn't matter as much. He was sending multiple Southampton players to the shadow zone with his running last Friday it was pretty hilarious to watch! Most impressive for me is the interplay between Chilwell and Barnes. When Harvey came back he played well initially but Chilwell never seemed to pass to him. Now they work in tandem and either Chilwell goes on the outside or Barnes goes on the inside. Very tricky for the opposition to stop because you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Honestly every player has improved under Rodgers. I heard we paid 9m to break him from his Celtic contract early plus 5m a year base salary. But if you ask me it's completely worth it, as he's increasing the value of every player we have by millions every day. One sale like Maguire pays for it all and then some. If Barnes "only" maintains his current level, he will probably end the season with 10+ assists which would be superb, but it's inevitable he will improve even further. And as this is the Tielemans thread, he too has improved a lot after a slow start. I feel like he is actually bossing the game now and maturing into a leader by being vocal. But he needs to be able to control a game for the whole 90, which as shown against Burton he's not quite able to do yet. But he is getting better and better by the match. Both young player of the season and player of the season awards at the club will be interesting next year! Compared to the title winning season rather than relying on individuals I feel like the whole team is performing. Only exception is of course Jamie Vardy who only continues to add to his legend here at Leicester.

When Burton had a free kick in the first half, he was ordering everyone around, telling them where they needing to be, reading the danger if a player broke loose, and he was honestly going mental at people until they listened and went where they needed to go. For someone so young he has a hardwired footballing brain which comes from years of experience. Bargain. Future captain? (Especially if it helps us keep him here?)

Maddison says as a #10, traditional attacking midfielder, like Ozil. They literally play as their shirt number suggest. I think you're being reductive of Maddison here. He often plays much deeper than someone like Ozil and certainly contributes more defensively.

Not so sure about Ozil, he often sits very deep, so deep in fact he often finds himself past the bench and even into the changing room...

He did play quite deep against Southampton but his average positions this season has been higher up the pitch than Tielemans.

Right, but marginally. They're very fluid on the pitch, which is part of what makes them so good tbf.

Assuming that teams are making plans to mark specific players, changing their average positions will upset the opposition tactics and create space for others to exploit

StriderHiryu Posted 31 October 2019 Posted 31 October 2019 Came across this video randomly on YouTube. The music might not be great, but the player involved is! A great highlights reel of Youri's passing for us and Belgium. It really makes you appreciate just how good a player he is... superb vision, brave enough to try to play the ball and a great passer. As the commentator at the Southampton game said... he is our brilliant Belgian!

Foxxed Posted 1 November 2019 Posted 1 November 2019 Let's have some more average player position stat porn. Southamton. Maddison playing a deeper role than Tielemans. Soyuncu staying futher back than Evans. Burnley: A failed attempt to get the second-choice wingers to score wih Ian farther back. Tieleman's a bit futher back. Hamza in Ndid's role. Praet central midfield.

I always fancied myself as an all round central mdifielder with an eye for a pass when I was younger... but I think Youri Tielemans is that player!!! What I and many love about him is the swaggerhe plays with. Very Xavi / Iniesta esque. Or even Michael Laudrup if you remember him, another one that made the game look so easy. Unbelievable player to watch play for us though. Genuine top class on his day.
urban fox Posted 1 November 2019 Posted 1 November 2019 not all of the passes in that video were spectacular but it is the way that even when playing a simple ball, the timing, weight and all round awareness of just where his team mates want it are extraordinary. The way he can disguise the pass or change the direction of the ball so quickly is a joy to watch. Took a a while to get back into his stride at the start of this season but he is starting to look like the class player we all knew he was again. In today's market £40m is starting to look like a steal. It is easy to forget that the guy is still only 22 when you see his composure on the ball. There is every chance that he could turn out to be one the best players to wear the shirt
KingsX Posted 1 November 2019 Posted 1 November 2019 This young man is already a surgeon wielding through balls instead of a scalpel ! He has a brain perfectly formed for this game. He sees everything before it happens. Beautiful to watch at his best.
urban.spaceman Posted 1 November 2019 Posted 1 November 2019 He won't go for anything less than £100m.

Arriba Los Zorros Posted 1 November 2019 Posted 1 November 2019 Holy hell. You can see how good he is with the first touch, sudden burst of pace and vision when watching a game but you don't quite appreciate some of the passes he threads through the eye of a needle. He is the complete midfielder, people often say that but with Youri it's so true. Speed of feet, speed of thought, vision, creativity, physicality, good finishing, two-footed, does defensive work. I honestly think he's a better version of Scholes. He's criminally underrated but don't think he will with us forever, just got to enjoy him while we can.

Add to that his awareness and reading of the game. They’re two things that you can’t teach and it’s what him allows to be so good. He’s a fantastic leader too. Not just because he shouts and points, but he’s respected because of his talent and knowledge of the game.
