City 1-1 Villa - Post Match

Recommended Posts

We started off ok and then they got the goal and it really knocked us off our stride. Second half, we dominated but were playing against 11 men behind the ball. Vardy has two decent chances, the second he did really well to turn into a great chance by taking it so early.

I think starting with the three in midfield was an error, we had no one covering Grealish and it left us open for his runs. Brendan, credit to him, picked that up straight away and change it at half time. Tie lemons and Chillwell are out of form and it’s effecting their decision making. I also think this young side needs to learn (and they will do) how to play in biggish games. It will come as at times we look like LCFC 2012/2013 where we play great stuff but when the pressures on, we struggle to know what to do. That team learnt from experience (albeit served in the harshest way) and this team just needs time to learn the same lesson

Overall, I’m disappointed we have drawn but we are far better than Villa and at their place I doubt they’ll set up so defensively. If they attack, we’ll have more space so I’m confident we will score.

Great finish from Nacho.

Ricardo and Perez played well.

Chilwell and Tielemans played shit.

Overall not great but roll on the second leg

Tielemans has the talents and a good football brain, but he just seems to not be able to concentrate fully and can be quite careless. This may be why he was frozen out at Monaco, I dont know. But he is definitely a player who can do a lot better and will improve, but I agree some time on the bench may do him some good.

Chilwell - see his thread. He does not have the same amount of talents and he has other issues.

Echo everything everyone has said about Chris Kavanagh. He is the absolute pits, the worst ref in the Premier League by a country mile, so crap he can make Craig Pawson look almost competent in comparison.

How can he give Grealish all those free kicks, and Mane that penalty at Anfield, yet send Maddison off for diving against Brighton last season? Clearly only punishes diving if it's a Leicester player, otherwise he rewards it handsomely.

How can he book a player for timewasting, spend ages pointing at his wrist, then only add on 3 minutes onto a half riddled with timewasting which featured 6 subs and a goal? Clearly when he was pointing at his wrist, he was too stupid to realise what the ticky round thing he was wearing on it was for.

Add the Rob Holding handball into the mix, and Ndidi's farcical sending off vs Brighton 2 seasons ago (plus the Brighton pen he gave, following an obvious dive, quelle surprise) and it all adds up to either he's the shittest ref around, or actively trying to bias games against us. Either way, he should be packed off to the job centre, as he's got no business refereeing at this, or any level, really.

The Vardy booking last night was really harsh, too.

..and what an absolutely dumb rule that is that a player misses a cup final just because he’s been booked twice in 180mins of football.

Sorry I stand corrected.

Apparently the rules for both the FA and Carabao cup state that no player can miss a final because of yellow cards.

Go for it Vards!😁

Interesting that people are criticising Perez. I thought he played pretty well.

He's just an easy target and certified Foxestalk scapegoat. I was shocked that he went off (though Nacho came on and scored), he seemed our liveliest player.

I blame the competition.  If it's a two legged tie where away goals count for double, the onus is on the away side to attack more.

Villa no strikers, park the bus, it was obvious what would happen.

Hopefully they do not adopt the same approach at home.  Once they come at us, we will do them over.

I stand to be corrected but i dont think "away goals" count as double in the league cup

Bit of a wet fart of a performance in the end. All the possession and shots we had don't really tell the story as Villa did plenty to stay in the game. Chilwell didn't go down the line once, confirming that he is most definitely a fullback, Maddison did his normal trick of going missing in an important game and Tielemans was lucky to last eighty minutes as he was well off the pace. Good to see Hamza come on and stand out above his midfield counterparts and I never thought I'd say this but thank god for Nacho coming on and saving us. Should make for a much better second leg all round though!

Nope, they'll stick 11 men and the ref behind the ball If tonight is anything to go by. Genuinely the worst team I've seen this season in both games and I include the 9-0 against Southampton. They are utterly horrible to watch, horrible shit tactics, wasting time, cheating, diving and just complete shithousery. Didnt think anyone could be as bad as Burnley but they actually are. Sooner they **** off back to the championship the better.

Disagree. Burnley play like that as standard, week after week. They are true shithousers.

Villa are a much more attractive and progressive team in general but had some recent injuries to key players including McGinn and coming away to us who were the odds on favourites, did what they had to do. It's up to us as one of the leading PL teams to be able to deal with that.

I don't like it, but if the shoe was on the other foot, and we were going to Man City with a few injuries, we wouldn't want to go there all guns blazing and would keep it tight. And we have done many times in the recent past.

Think villa will set up the same a try to play for penalties.

If we won, they'd have to come at us a bit which would play into our hands.

After the draw, I agree, I can see them doing exactly the same thing and hitting us on the break. They'll get two or three big chances at least, which could be enough for them.

Having said that I back our players to pick the lock in the second leg. We need to up the pace and intensity though. Last night we didn't move the ball anywhere near as quickly as we should have.

If there's one criticism I have of Jonny Evans as well is that he holds on to the ball for too long. He has the time and space but if he saw a pass earlier we'd set the tone for a quicker, more incisive attacking move. But then again perhaps the problem is a lack of movement ahead of him. He's still a wonderful defender.

He’s obviously more suited to playing centrally than on the wing, but the bottom line is that he is a striker, he cost £30m, and he still hasn’t scored at home.

If he were to bang in an important goal like Nacho did last night, the criticism would disappear at a stroke.

Really good point and echoes some of my own thoughts. This team finished 9th the last two seasons so this season is already a seismic improvement. But as you say you can see the relative inexperience of a number of our players in games like this.

It will come in time which IMO makes it even more important to get behind them. 1-1 is not the best result but with no away goals rule in play the tie is still evenly balanced.

Don't blame Villa for their defensive tactics at all, what were people expecting? Especially once they went ahead. Actually think they could have got another goal if they were a little more adventurous as they were getting in behind Fuchs pretty easily first half.

As disappointing as it was, we still had enough decent to good chances to win the game quite comfortably. Vardy was his ruthless self, back him to put one of those chances away most games and Maddison had 3 reasonable chances too.

We needed someone direct and Barnes should have come on at half time for Fuchs or Chilwell. Feel a little bit sorry for Praet has he always seems to get dragged at half time, he wasn't particularly good but not the worst.

Rodgers has created a problem that wasn't there with his tweaking in formation. Yes goals weren't coming from Barnes and Perez but team was winning. I guess this happens when you're relying on Vardy for most your goals.

I agree. I've been a huge critic of Perez but have to say that I thought he played really well compared with others last night. He appears far more comfortable in a central role. There were players that deserved criticism but for me he wasn't one of them.

We should have taken our first half chances. Had we had done so Vanilla would have been down and out by halftime. Perhaps the target isn't big enough, the crossbar too low and the posts not wide enough. Far too many guilty of shooting wayward as you'd expect to see on local parks football.
