In the current squad its Soumare, but maybe Neves from Wolves if we could attract him?

I think Youri's looming departure is actually a reason for Brendan trying his best to look after Maddison. Losing both in 1 window would rid us of alot of technical ability.

Ryan Gravenberch or Houssem Aouar

Both probably wouldn't come here though.

Wouldn't mind us trying to get Ross Barkley, I've always liked him.

These are both good shouts at least the type of player. I would be against both - Barkley strikes me as an inconsistent confidence player and not sure that Neves is suited to the league (although could be years of playing in Nuno's ultra defensive and cautious system) but certainly better shouts than James ****ing Ward Prowse.

The ideal player to replace Youri would be Ilkay Gundogan IMO. However we have no chance.

I don't watch much football outside the PL, from what I've seen Oliver Skipp might be worth a shot? or, is he too defensively minded? John McGinn possibly too, although not sure he's tactically or positionally disciplined enough.

Of a young player with potential to develop and do well, we could do worse than Flynn Downes at Swansea.

You know I was really not bothered by JWP but our set pieces are truly dreadful so he’s probably needed

.....it is good to get other ideas coming in, in regards to our set pieces!!!

Maddison was very instrumental when he first came and there was variation being implemented. There was a very obvious change when Bertrand came and was instrumental in all the deadball situations, and was good. Thomas has a very good delivery but that seemingly has dropped off .

You do get the feeling that as soon as players encounter our training environment their quality drops and merges with the underperforming and unimaginative coaching staff to produce substandard deadball processes.

Some other highlights of Soumare that we've seen so far:

These are skills that Youri doesn't have, his ability to dribble and ride challenges.

But of course Youri is the best passer we've probably ever had at the club. In my mind only Gary Parker probably came close to the range of passing Youri has.

Don’t forget Steve Thompson.

Mahrez played some unreal passes with us. Tielemans produces fantastic passes more regularly but I don't think he's ever played a ball like Mahrez's for Vardy at West Brom.

Or Mahrez's first-time touch on for Vardy at home in the wet v Man City.  Unreal control.

Tanner’s most recent article suggests he’s waiting for a “behemoth” to come in. Big Daddy Don Bodine has been alerted.

We already have him, Boubakary Soumare. He's a different type of player because he's more of a traditional box-to-box player than a rolls-royce passing type of player, but functionally achieves the same thing; progressive ball carries.

This season is all about developing his game and improving him, we should start to expect to see top level performances in 2022.

There have already been some glimpses of what he can do so far in some games already:

giphy.gif?cid=790b7611795b43bf9ee426665f

We probably would then also buy a player who is a refined passer of the ball too, but Soumare is 100% the player signed to take over from Youri.

I think Soumare can play the same position as Youri, but he's not a like for like replacement.  He's more of a hybrid of Youri and Ndidi, a traditional two-way midfielder.  Faster and more physical than Tielemans (well, Princess Anne is faster and more physical than Tielemans), but not as creative or refined and never will be.  Better on the ball and picking a pass than Wilf (well, Princess Anne is...) but lacking the defensive instincts and ballhawking ability.  Not the equal of either at what they're best at, but better than either at the weaker aspects of their game.

If Soumare is a straight-up replacement for Tielemans, you better make up for that gap in creativity from somewhere - be it another MF (maybe KDH, too early to tell) alongside him, or an in-form creative #10.  Otherwise Youri's absence will create a hole Soumare isn't capable of filling.

Tanner has been insistent that Soumare was not signed as the Tielemans replacement.  He once stated it was more as insurance for Ndidi getting hurt or leaving.

While I doubt Tanner has the inside scoop … nor do I see Soumare as anything similar enough to Youri to take his role and still allow us to play the same way.

Honestly it’s been hard to get a sense of Soumare’s present or future role in his few appearances.  Except that we like good players who can more or less play multiple positions.  More or less.

Finding a potential replacement for Youre must be the scouting septs. single biggest task right now I imagine. Not an easy task when lookin for diamonds in the rough who may or may not be polisheable. Pressure is on!

Tanner said he was signed as a hybrid player that was similar to Ndidi and Tielemans, but not a direct replacement for either. But if Youri leaves, he is the obvious replacement.

With regards to Soumare, Rodgers himself recently said the following:

“I think he’s adapting well.” “We want more goal threat and more attacking bodies to get into the box, and that releases him that little bit more. (Against Burnley), he was up there in the more advanced positions and getting into the box."

“He started his career as a number 10, that’s what he was, he was up there as a creative player.

“It’s just really about giving confidence to him to get in there, and you see he threatened a few times.

“That’s just time. Yes, he’s played deeper but he has the capacity, because he’s a good athlete, to run and get forward and get into the box.

“He’s adapting well to the tempo of the Premier League, it’s a totally different pace of the game for him. I’ve been really pleased with him.”

Youri's function is as a box to box midfielder, Soumare the same. In the last two matches the pair of them have literally played the same role, just on different sides of the pitch. See the tactics thread for more examples of him doing exactly that. Where they differ is that Youri uses his range of passing to make the play, whereas Soumare carries it forwards with his dribbling. Think Patrick Vieria compared to Cesc Fabregas.

Youri Tielemans is an elite distributor of the ball, and there are very few players in Europe that are as good as he is at play making. The chances of finding anyone with his passing ability are very slim, as that was the reason we were prepared to break our transfer record for him. But you can still achieve the same thing (IE getting the ball up the pitch and play making) with other characteristics.

I’d be happy with a Ndidi, Soumare, KDH and Praet midfield if YT goes.

I’d also be content with selling Soyuncu and bringing in Tarkowski on a free so we have a lot of cash to spend on 3 attacking midfielders (hopefully Lookman being one of them)

....if Youri went we would need to get in a creative midfielder!!!

Strange that we sent Praet out and played with two #8s, as this was a rare thing to do hence Praet's continued omission.

Selling Soyuncu would not be a good call, this is a role that you get better in and you can see in Evans what a quality he is even now. Rodgers seems to be intent on playing with a back three and with Fofana and Tarkowski it will be a pretty formidable Backline further down the line.

All we need to do is:

1. Let Ndidi be Ndidi, do not attempt to alter his role into something that you thing he could be.

2.  Soumare is a box-to-box player and will massively affect this team, let him pick the ball off the Backline and progress us forward, without having to get in the box as an added goal threat.

3. KDH needs game time, what ever enthusiasm he must have felt prior to the start of the season, maybe is now starting to wane, it is only natural.

4. Praet is not a Rodgers player, for some reason he either does not trust him or a clash of personalities, but he will be gone so long as he gets to complete his present loan.

James Ward-Prowse is a truly awful shout. Outside of set pieces he is average or below at literally everything.

The only things I've ever seen him do are score free-kicks and wind up Zaha every time they play Palace

Jean Pyrre or Samuele Ricci are Tielemans type playmakers but I'm not sure there is a like for like replacement that we can pluck off the shelf. I do wonder just how good Dewsbury-Hall can become as well, I absolutely love the way he plays football.

I tell you who I'd take a punt on though is Donny Van De Beek, another very talented central midfielder whose first step up to a top 5 European league hasn't gone well but thst doesn't mean he isn't good enough.

This is loser talk. Just keep him,

If we don't keep him; we get another player. But that player isn't 'YOURI'S SUCCESSOR'. Its absolute nonsense. Let players be themselves.

Guess what? Daka isn't the 'NEW VARDY' either. People don't have to be the new someone or someone's successor. Its a football team; not a bloody monarchy of sham inherited privilege.
