Let's have a films thread.

I thought the Skywalker film was quite entertaining but maybe I'm not as invested as some others in the saga.

Only ever seen the films as a bit of escapist nonsense and tbh even saw the original 3 films as a bit of fluff.

The one exception from my perspective in the whole saga including spin offs would be Rogue One, which I thought was fantastic and stands on its own as a great film.

Not seen Skywalker yet.

Agree about Rogue One - it's the one film of the franchise that for me sits in the Star Wars universe, makes the most of it and isn't compromised in some way, be it trying too hard to keep fans on side, playing it too safe, trying to appeal to all age groups etc.  A miracle given the problems they had making it

Went to see Cats at the weekend, not my choice I hasten to add, and didn't think it was half as bad as has been made out by the press.

Sure it's utterly bizarre, but so is the musical. It's ultimately a collection of whimsical poetry about the personality of some cats, it was never going to be amazing. I do think part of the problem behind the perception is that some have gone to see it with little to no knowledge of the poetry/musical, and in that case it would make even less sense than it does anyway.

I think these last 3 SW films will eventually be looked at as an example of how not to make a trilogy. You genuinely need time to process the film when you leave cos in an effort to undo the Last Jedi's mistakes, so much stuff is thrown at you so fast your brain literally can't take in what you've watched before youre on to the next scene. It's a horrible mess that at its best never rises above the level of the most mediocre marvel film and at its worse is near Michael Bay levels of stupidity and bombast.

Film wise I don't know where Star Wars can go from here. It is creatively bankrupt.

Seen The Rise of Skywalker again and it was so much better this time round. I wasn't tired and could watch it properly, you really need to pay attention as there's a lot to tie up.

I found it helped to treat it as a sequel to The Force Awakens and ignore The Last Jedi. I've seen one review that says if you took the film and broke it in half, then fleshed them out, that THAT should be parts 8 and 9.

They should have had Emperor Palpatine and his fleet unveiled at the end of ep 8 and leave that as a cliffhanger, Luke should have died in ep 9. There was plenty of crap in ep 8 that could have been cut (that Canto Bight space horse vegan greenpeace scene).

Spoiler

At the end of 9, all of the Skywalker family are dead and Palpatine's grand daughter takes the Skywalker name. Can't help but think Palpatine got the last laugh

There's three ways you can go about reviewing and reflecting on Episode 9.  You can review it as a standalone film, you can look at it as the final sequence in "a trilogy" of films (more on that later) or you can take it on how it fits into the whole series of films from start to finish.

Back to 2015 for a moment.  The hype leading into TFA was massive.  New characters, old characters, continuing the saga, throw in JJ Abrahms, lens flare, top notch CGI.  The film didn't shift the boundaries, it played it safe.  It worked, mostly.  I've watched it a few times since.  It holds up well.  The ending as Rey hands over the lightsabre is, was, a great clifffhanger to bow out on.  Everything is set up for something great, anticipation is high, expectations massive.

(2016, Rogue One, brilliant, expectations soar).

It's 2017.  Two years of waiting for expectations to be met.  Enter Rian Johnson.

As the lightsabre is tossed over the cliffedge, TLJ and Rian Johnson go with it.  The film never recovers.  We get Luke milking weird creatures, forced comedic moments that aren't funny, a side trip to a casino that doesn't go anywhere, a catch me if you can space race, some guy called Snoke, Rey's nobodies, space Leia, The Knights of Ren go on vacation, Phasma... the list goes on and on.  It's a mess.  I'm annoyed, I'm angry, Rian Johnson you have ****ed this up.  You've just managed to outdo Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones in terms of how bad this film is.  Well done.  I've lost interest.

(2018, Solo, I've not bothered).

Roll on 2019, today, zero expectations.  JJ Abrahms has his work cut out sorting this mess out.  Reviews are mixed.  Within the first 5 minutes, Abrahms begins to sort out Johnson's mess.  Intentional or not, the way in which Snoke is explained and Palpatine introduced works.  There's a difference here.  It has me invested in what is to come, possibly there is a chance JJ can pull this around.  I'm watching intently, attention doesn't waver for a second.

The part where Luke hands the lightsabre back as Rey throws it, that's the screw you Johnson moment and that was great.

For the most part, by the time the credits roll, I'm happy and satisfied, the film works.  There's even more lens flare, the CGI is better than ever, the pace is super fast but it makes perfect sense to me.  This is Star Wars after all.  But it feels as though, for the most part, it's back.  I'd give it an 8/10.

Now, in terms of where it fits in to these new "trilogy" of films.  We don't have a trilogy of films.  We have a clear idea of what two films are and what one isn't.  You take a decent 30 minutes (if you can find it) out of TLJ and put it into either TFA or ROS and you've got yourself two perfectly decent films.  No need for a filler episode and that's exactly what that was.

Hopefully the future is bright.  The Mandalorian is decent and D&D have been binned off this new trilogy of films following their butchering of S8 GoT so we'll see where it goes.  For now, I wouldn't hesitate in watching episode 9 again.

Another thing that JJ did to undo TLJ damage was to introduce Admiral Ackbar's son. Rian Johnson killed off the squid-headed hero in the last film with little regard.

I agree whole-heartedly about TLJ, but Solo is a good movie and didn't deserve the fallout from TLJ that it got.

If you've not watched it because of TLJ, then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you have watched it and didn't like it, fair enough, but there is much to like about Solo.

Hmm, yes and no.

SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT (sorry, don't know how to hide spoilers on mobile site).

If I still have a gripe with RoS, it's the "take backs". Too many, "noooo, that can't happen" moments, immediately followed by, "oh, phew it didn't", a few minutes later.
