Ben Chilwell's Message for Leicester Fans

From the Mercury:

Ben Chilwell has pleaded with the Leicester City fans to stick with Claude Puel’s youngsters as they continue to develop.

The left-back is a shining example of the transition taking place at City as manager Claude Puel transform them from the side that won the title in 2016 to a younger squad he hopes will challenge for honours again in the future.

Chilwell has gone from the under-23s to establishing himself as City’s first-choice left-back under the Frenchman, and has now become a full England international in the last 18 months, and he isn’t the only one to emerge.

James Maddison and Demarai Gray have also been included in England squads by Gareth Southgate, while Hamza Choudhury and Harvey Barnes have graduated from the academy to become first-team starters this season.

Chilwell said he can understand the frustrations of the City fans, especially at the King Power Stadium, but he said the youngsters are learning and making progress.

“If you look at the team now from the team which won the league it’s pretty much a different 11 and it’s a very young squad,” he said.

“The fans expect results which is understandable but it’s a young team which is learning

“We’re not scrapping in a relegation battle. We’re doing okay, playing good football and getting results against the bigger teams.

“We just need to carry that on against sides in and around us in the league.

“Of course, the manager, us, everyone at the training ground are all trying our best.

“It would be nice if they were patient with us but you can understand they expect results with the quality we have got.

“The gaffer has put a lot of faith in the youngsters and in terms of learning and improving we have done that well.

“We are not going to have brilliant performances where we win every week but the quality in the team, if we can build on that in the next few years, it can only go up.

“It’s a learning curve for us and we are learning and definitely improving. That’s the main thing you have to take from the past few weeks. We can throw ourselves about against the top teams.

“We are improving to be fair, the last two games we have shown how good we are as a team – defensively in the Liverpool game and then attacking on Sunday as we created a lot.

“There’s a lot of positives to take. Going 1-0 down is the main thing we have to work on as it’s happened a lot this season.

“We are working on it and feel like after we go 1-0 down we do always react quite well.”

The source of much of the discontent amongst a section of the supporters is the fact City have picked up just four wins on home soil this season, and Chilwell said it something the players are fully aware of and are trying to rectify.

“In hindsight you always look back and think if we’d got points in these games where we’d be in the league, then you could say the same for the games we have won which we maybe shouldn’t have,” he added.

“You can always look back but it is frustrating."

As has been said before, we're on a long term plan and we're on the curve of that at the moment, I like the way we are progressing. Champions of England, new training ground, stadium expansion, investing in quality youth (Chil, Hamz etc.) signing top quality players (Tillyman) etc. was only around 5 years ago we were staring at the jaws of relegation and the Championship league.

Player literally asking the fans to stop being bellends

It’s another case of misinterpring what the frustrations are though. The results aren’t solely why everyone is getting annoyed it’s shit football we turn out unless we’re playing a ‘big club’. People wouldn’t be so pissed off with where we are and some of the results we’ve had if we were atleast entertaining to watch.

Yes he's absolutely correct.

However, he'll be gone in the summer for certain.

I don't think anyone thinks we should be top 6 or whatever, I think everyone applauds Puel's 'bravery' to play such a young squad and I don't think anyone expects us to win every game.

But we're out of both cups and we've got a dismal home record.

I think there's got to be some sort of middle ground here. Ultimately football is an entertainment industry and every club has a duty to entertain it's supporters. I think that now we've effectively only got a chance of qualifying for the very early rounds of the Europa League we ought to get out there and throw caution to the wind and attack teams.

Things like 3 defensive midfielders at home to Southampton isn't a choice made from necessity. We've got a lot of serious talent in our team, talent that could end up at some of the biggest clubs on the planet. It will be a great shame if we don't make the most of these boys.

Mad to think that the next time he gets abuse trying to take a throw-in it'll likely be coming from his own support.

possibly, though I don't consider abuse  heckling and booing  to be 'support'.

I disagree.

We've played some decent football (not brilliant) recently but made it difficult for ourselves.

I'd argue we've been the better side for most of our games since the New Year, but conceding early means the opposition can defend resolutely and its hard for us to unlock. It completely changes the face of the game. We've still had copious amounts of chances though, but either keepers have been on top form or our strikers haven't.

Cut out the errors and I'd wager we'd have drawn with Cardiff/Wolves, beat Southampton/Newport and possibly got more against United, too.

There are clear faults, that's undeniable, but there seems to be an awareness of it throughout (most of) the squad/management and a willingness to address it. We've brought Barnes back to give us more creativity up front, we've struggled in midfield so brought in YT etc.

What I find quite telling is that the younger players all seem eager to come out and defend Puel. Not much at all from our more experienced pros. Seems like there might be a bit of a rift in the dressing room...

Much of what he says is true, quality player.

Fair to say as fans we have delivered in the past, Really is difficult though to get exited or appear exited when what you're watching really isn't that stimulating.

The club and the players have and no doubt still will have the fans support.

When you look at the team's average team you won't find much experienced pros anymore, aside from Vardy and Kasper, maybe that's why. He's clearly going for the youth and they're the future of the club. So I'd rather see them come out than the old guard which time is now counted.

Looks like Ben got the short straw in the dressing room huddle.

Or more likely the club pushed him forward.

The team should be judged on performances not on carefully scripted rhetoric.

Sort the home form out and all the fans will be onside again.

I think that's a misinterpretation in itself, you make it sound like a lack of effort or can't be bothered. The reality is for me the opposite in that they can but at the moment we just haven't got the players in the final third to break down the park the bus brigade.
