I think Soyuncu is actually a better passer at short distances than Maguire, who did sometimes give away some bad ones (see against Crystal Palace last week). But Maguire did go for more raking passes, or Riyad Mahrez impressions from time-to-time! But I don't always think that was to the benefit of the team. It looked in Puel's system as we had two defensive midfielders playing the pivot, now that we only play one, Soyuncu is doing the right thing.

I defer to your points about Maguire as you've seen him play more than I have. Enjoying Soyuncu's confidence and expertise. Long may it continue.

only positives about the guy and shows what a fantastic job the club did in scouting him. Nice he has been given a few games and the Fans are behind him. He will only improve with Evans and Wes schooling him and Benko pushing for a game. Seems to have settled in fully now. Expect him to be linked with a move now

I think you two have summed the guy up with two great quotes. @Bert's observations are exactly why @LinekersLugs comparison to Maldini is not as outlandish as it might seem. Obviously Maldini was one of the greatest ever defenders of all time who was world class as either a Left Back or a Centre Back. Maldini had the ability to read the danger way ahead of time, made the right challenges and then dealt with it superbly once he had seen the danger out. He had such good anticipation that he made it look effortless at times.

 

I think just to reign it a little bit, Soyuncu makes two mistakes for Wilson's goal. One he didn't follow him, which I can let him off because we largely play zonal marking under Rodgers, and two, once Wilson shot I felt like Soyuncu could have got to it, or at least should have tried to even if he ended kicking it in himself. But still it's not like he was the only at fault, and the rest of his performance was truly superb, and he came back from that mistake very well. I think in situations like this he just needs to make a better decision ahead of time. Prior to that, he was doing a fantastic job on WIlson because he was following him about, but the one time he didn't, Wilson scored! Yes following him would have put him out of position, but the hesitancy gave him the opportunity to shoot.

 

Anyway that's harsh to dwell on that, for me he was our second best player after Vardy today. Colossal performance.

Great performance today - I really like this guy....

 

Saw him pre-season at Cambridge and he looked dodgy - seems to have improved greatly since then....

 

....but anyone else think he could have thrown himself at the Bournemouth goal and got it away? Can't help thinking he was too afraid of clattering himself on the post.
