He’s a utility player who is a right back who can also cover other positions. As I’ve said before that kind of player is fine just not as a replacement for Chilwell. We don’t need someone who can ‘comfortably play lb or lwb’ we need someone who is a lb/lwb and has been playing that position week in week out for years and is very good at it.

What if we have a replacement for Chilwell, but he's not quite ready? Possibly next year (no pressure on the lad)? This transfer covers that area, he steps back to RB when Riccy is gone, then we don't have to held to ransom this window for a LB, and we then invest that saving elsewhere?

If we had any real faith in Thomas and he would have been in our plans, we would have let Fuchs go..Thomas will go out on loan goal a year at least.

Thomas did well when put in at the deep end but also cost us in some situations.. I think many of us forget this with him being home grown.. And us wanting to unearth another gem..

Not really. He did extremely well given we were down 3 of our 4 starting defenders.(by the end of the season we had zero)  He made a few errors yes but to be expected with so many players out.

By no means the finished article but looked more at home at this level than Chilwell when he started out.

As for Castagne I'd say go for it. He's not a like for like replacement for Chilwell but we lost out on Champions League for having no defensive cover. Also we badly missed Ricardo's urgency during lockdown. He might just inject some of that back into the team.

Might not be A grade but doest seem like a Luis Hernandez either.

Scenes when JJ becomes Englands first choice LB

I mean that’s never going to happen. I don’t actually think he will ever play for England. His best position is RB and he’s very very unlucky with the options england have there

But has been playing LM/RM /Bench for the last 2 years

He’s featured on the bench 17 times in two years...... and he’s started roughly 29 games on the left and 21 on the right..... so this proves he is not up to it? Atalanta is to play a fluid system, as many European teams do, and we can see city do this from time to time. He’s played enough games in a LWB position (which is how we will play mainly this season). To be capable enough to play there. If it were to be true it wouldn’t be a bad signing at all, he’s young, but has experienced can play in several positions, he is highly rated and has European experience. He also won’t cost too much and has time to develop and gain a handsome re-sale value.

Why spend stupid money on a full back when we need not to? We need to keep some spare bucks aside for when we look at players like Edouard, because that’s when we will need the extra pound notes.

Based on what I’ve heard this would appear to be a very astute signing.

People complaining about not going for an out and out left back forget we have Thomas who in his games so far (albeit small sample size) suggests HUGE potential that will hopefully allow us to transition him into the team over the next year or 2.

Why fork out a lot of funds on a LB in his prime you could be stuck with on high wages for years when you can add versatility to the squad and maintain a wealth of options. It allows Thomas some breathing room to grow and ideally become our next Chilwell. Technically we’d have 4 choices in this position (Castagne, Thomas, Justin, Fuchs) which should be more than enough?

Less funds spent which can free up room for a higher profile winger/forward

That's fine if we expect Thomas to play 20-30 games this season and have Ricardo, Castagne, Justin and Thomas as our main four full backs.

It's hard for me to have an informed opinion as I've not seen Castagne play and I don't know how highly rated Thomas is and if BR feels he's ready to play a significant amount of games this season. If Thomas is going to go out on loan or used sparingly then I'd prefer a specialist LB rather than a jack of all trades filling in there.

I suppose it's hard for any of us to judge until we see how it pans out in the first half of the season as there are a lot of variables.

I’d prefer a loan for an actual left back otherwise it feels like we’re just writing a season off. Our full backs are too crucial to how we play to be messing around for a season with someone out of position. Everyone saw how awful we were last season without Ricardo and Chilwell. I’ve said it before even a season long loan for someone like rose who knows this position inside out would be preferable for me.

Im hoping that Luke Thomas is the Chilwell replacement and not this guy if this transfer goes through and another left back doesn’t come in

People complain we have no plan B, but when Rodgers tries to buy a player who helps us be flexible enabling to play a number of formation the moan brigade come out in force.

People making a big issue about a right footer playing on the left, a hold host of players have made a career out playing on the other side to their strongest foot.

I’m sorry, but when have we played the CM Praet out of position in a CM role?

Praet is just a standard CM. I like my CM to either excel defensively like Ndidi or offensively like Maddison. Praet does neither particularly well which is why I'm not a fan.

This guy can play on the right and left of defence and midfield. He has international experience. He has champions league experience. He’s been playing in a side arguably punching above their weight. We can not afford to have 23 specialist work class players - we are just not at that level. What this signing does is add value to the team/squad when injuries hit.

This is just smart business for a club about to embark on a rare European campaign. It gives us Ricardo, Castagne and Justin as options. All versatile. All talented. It also removes the need to panic buy as the deadline approaches. How can anyone possibly criticise this move.

This.

Never heard United fans moaning about Denis Irwin or Chelsea fans about Azpilicueta in 16/17

They were suggesting we were playing him out of position as the post followed a comment regarding playing Perez out of position.

Praet has played DM CM yet is judged as an AM in some quarters... I liked praet initially but do wonder what he does well and offers.

Rodgers has toyed with formations (diamond was a disaster)

toyed with players out of position with little success...

just buy players for the position..

This is the left back equivalent of rodgers starting the season with maddison left wing, perez right wing and choudhury as an 8. He seems to have an obsession of playing players out of their natural position.

It's really not though is it.

Think you will find that Football Manager does not say he  is a LB.

lol

edit: I know it does really but he is just a RB right? Guess we must be selling Ricky then

Maddison can play lw, perez can play rw, choudhury can play as an 8, just because a player can play in a position doesnt mean theyre suited to it and castagne isnt suited to playing lb. Imagine we signed maitland niles to play lb theyre very similar players.
