Small sample size admittedly, well 1 game in fact, but Justin and Barnes worked well together that night. Barnes doesn't need an over lapping full back all the time, he needs space to knock and run. Ricardo on one side where we tend to have more inverted wide men and someome more steady on the left might work well.

We also had a class left back. That's something we don't have right now.

People are "bitching and moaning" because we haven't signed a Chilwell replacement. That's the point.

If Castagne was as good as he is on the right but on the left then nobody would complain. He'd fill a hole for two years until Thomas is ready.

Instead we've signed a right wing back that can occasionally play at left wing back. I struggle to see where he starts in the team. We all saw how much of an utter disaster the 5 at the back spell was last season.

If we went and got a specialist left back to replace Chilwell then there wouldn't be a problem whatsoever.

Do you not think it's ridiculous to go and spend 24m on a wing back when we don't currently have any option but to play a flat back 4?

Marc Albrighton was a specialist right winger before we signed him and played him on the left, turned out ok for him.

Yeah thank god we got a third choice right back in for 24m.

If he is third choice right back, the good news is 1 we are loaded, 2 strength in depth which many people moan about, so all good innit?

I don’t see this guy as the Chilwell replacement, rather more of a Ricardo replacement.
If we don’t sign anyone else this window, Justin will be the Chilwell replacement.

Worrying if that's the case

I can't see what the issue is. You can either play left back or you can't, and he can.... What is the issue? Just because right peg is stronger than his left? He's an established international player who is flexible. It is a win win.

All the tweets i’ve seen from Atalanta fans say he’s comfortable on both sides. plus the people crying have probably never seen him

That sounds very plausible indeed.

Only thing I would say is that you might see Albrighton start as LWB. He played there a few times post lockdown and was pretty good. Or even Albrighton as RWB and Castagne as LWB, etc. With European games we'll have a lot of fixtures, so having two sets of wingbacks plus cover isn't outlandish at all. JJ looked good as a third CB as well with his pace. I could see him playing all three roles over time!

As for Ricky P, you couldn't begrudge him a move could you? He's twice the player Maguire or Chilwell will ever be and genuienly should be playing for a team competing for the top trophies. Soyuncu and Ndidi will probably go that way too eventually.

Thanks @StriderHiryu, as usual you make good points, though I’m afraid I have to disagree with you about Albrighton! A decent 4th/5th choice wide midfield player, but not a wing back for me in a million years.

Ricky? Don’t want to lose him, but if he recovers his pre-injury form & fitness, he’s too good for us, isn’t he? He’s the second best RB in our league & surely one of the best half dozen in Europe.

Sadly, I think TC’s signing tells us it’s Ricky leaving next summer. On a positive note, it also suggests we can look forward to at least two more seasons of Wilf, Cags & Madders!

I am not doubting he's a good player, like I say, I'm not unhappy to sign him - having read Fancasts recent report on the potential replacement options for him I thought he appeared the most likely given his contract situation.

My gripe is that you've got him not important enough to Atalanta for them to not let him run his contract down, and there are questions about the position he actually fits in most.

I think when both of those things are considered, we've paid a bit too much for him.

I'll say this once and I'll likely refer back to it when it gets thrown at me again later in the window - I'm aware it's not my money, but getting the most for your money is imperative for a club like us progressing to the top. I personally wouldn't have gone over £12mil.

Look, he’s not the slickest dribbler around but he’s really solid defensively and will help us play with multiple setups, which is perfect as Rodgers loves changing a formation even more than he loves slipping in a humble brag in every interview.

Seems like the fee might be a couple mil too high but I doubt we would want him to go for any less than that if he were our player.

Albrighton played RWB during the great escape, and did really well in that position!

I would tend to agree with you in that I would have other players there instead of him, but don't be surprised if he plays a few games in that position for us, especially with Ricardo out for the first few months.

Can’t wait for the lad to get an assist in his first game at left back :scarf:

Okay so that might not happen but give the bloke a chance.

If he's as good as they say and flexible like JJ then it looks like it could be a great signing 👍

Looking at previous stats he's played right wing before albeit not often. I cant see the club shelling anymore cash on defence this summer so one would assume that JJ and Castagne will rotate the RB/LB positions when needed with RP being the mainstay RB when fit/not required. Castagne likes to get up the flanks so hopefully he'll gell better with Barnes (who's end productivity needs to increase quite a bit to take the pressure off the midfield). Now a descent RW/Stiker needed and I wouldn't begrudge Dwight M to be frank.

So everyone’s cross because we’ve signed a young(ish) versatile international player, highly rated by the Atalanta fan base, for half the price of the full back we’ve just sold...without any knowledge of how BR plans to use him.

He did, but in the last couple of seasons when he’s played as WB he’s looked like a fish out of water.

You may be right though, and if we play WBs (which I still don’t think will be often) I’ll be disappointed, not surprised, if MA gets minutes there.

I'm just relieved it's not Matt Targett we've signed!

You are not in an exclusive Club with that!  A magazine of bullets missed there.

One, maybe two CBS first!!

Yeh be nice but I think we’ll get a winger first, as it stands when everyone’s fit we still have 4 CBS don’t get me wrong I think we could strengthen in that position though.

I really doubt they will wait until the 9th to announce this, especially if they have no other signings lined up.

Chelsea announced Thiago Silva with a graphical image and then updated it a day or so later with him holding a t-shirt in a hotel room where he's on holiday.... don't think we will have to wait as long as usual for the 'must be at the training ground' photo op somehow.
