I would like to see us progress, to bring in players that can do more than fill in or do a job but actually improve us. I guess I am hard to please when it comes to transfers, but speaking personally, I was more than satisfied with Maddison, Tielemans, Ricardo, Soyuncu and Benkovic. Players with huge potential and high ceilings. Or Evans, cheap and instant short term improvements. What happened to that brief? With the exception of Justin (another signing that I like), we now seem to be bringing in mid-twenties players that don't fit that model anymore - Perez, Praet, Castagne...

If we don’t sign anyone else this window, Justin will be the Chilwell replacement. May have been the plan all along in terms of Justin. That’s where he played for Luton. we already had Maguire replacement. Maybe the recruitment team do have a plan. Chelsea announced Thiago Silva with a graphical image and then updated it a day or so later with him holding a t-shirt in a hotel room where he's on holiday.... don't think we will have to wait as long as usual for the 'must be at the training ground' photo op somehow. Hopefully either Youri or Dennis brought some club kit with them..

Finnegan Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 29 minutes ago, moore_94 said: Do you not see how signing a player like Castagne who can cover multiple positions at full back and also if we really need probably further forward is extremely beneficial to these points? In theory, yes. In reality, to my knowledge, Castagne is a mortal human and can only be in one place at a time. Fuchs is a hundred years old, Thomas is twelve years old and Justin looks promising but raw so, in all reality, Castagne is likely to be our first choice left back and nothing more. His versatility is an irrelevance if he's going to be tied down to one position through necessity. To that end, I can see why people might be anxious that we're not simply signing a specialist, which would be the most obvious thing to do. In reality we're basically in the same position we were a week ago, just £20m better off and time is marching on. To iterate, I'm not being hysterical here and I should stress I'm not fundamentally unhappy with this signing. He looks decent. But I am anxious about the new season and I can see why others are.

Jazzy_Jeff Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 Good signing IMO. good age, experience and can play a number of positions. A good contingency if a massive bid comes in for Ricardo next summer if RB/RWB is his best position
HighPeakFox Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 I just fell in here. Not only MUST we sign players YESTERDAY, but we must sign them IN THE RIGHT ORDER. 1
mozartfox Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 To put some perspective on this, Belgium are ranked number 1 by FIFA. We have just signed a 24 year old member of their current squad and some people are kicking off on here? Behave. Wait until we extend Matty James and Wes, then kick off.
RowlattsFox Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 The fee is pretty standard these days ain't it? Even in his last year of contract, unfortunately we probably always have to offer a bit more than value to get ahead of rivals. We'd have paid more for Jamal Lewis or even Matt Targett. We probably had regular left backs of interest including Tagliafaco but chances are they've said they're not interested in coming here or we were not willing to pay the fees quoted. He's a good age, got good experience, versatile and potential to improve. Ticks most of our boxes really. I don't watch much European football any more though so haven't seen much of him. Old fashioned maybe but lets see how he does.
Ted Maul Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 Happy enough with that, good replacement for Chilwell with the added bonus of versatility. Now onto the reinforcements- still a lot of work to be done if we want to compete on all fronts.
Scotch Posted 1 September 2020 Share Posted 1 September 2020 At the VERY worst, he is a top quality cover for Ricado whilst JJ and Thomas fight it out for the LB slot and at best, he starts at LB.
Popular Post GingerrrFox Posted 1 September 2020 Popular Post Share Posted 1 September 2020 I think Barnes would actually benefit from having a full back who prefers to be slightly narrower on the left. Barnes’s instinct is to get in behind both down the line and in-between the opposition full back and centre half. Often he and Chilwell were fighting for the same spaces. I think having a full back who is more technical and looks to pass rather than break constantly from his own half into the opposition half will actually help Barnes flourish more this season.

Have you seen his goal and assists returns from a defensive position (in a good league)? Mate, it's a farmers' league. Italians are inferior to us, they know nothing, especially about football. And there's no such place as Atalanta, so in fact the team doesn't even exist.
