Premier League 2020/21 Thread

The media are playing up to their fanbase. Which is big, obsessed but also slightly blinded by thinking they’re a huge club.

That squad they had last season is really average. Bielsa worked wonders and his style of play was really effective. I don’t think it’ll work as well against better quality opposition though. They’ve got a few good players but the rest are just workers.

Despite all that, I think they’ll stay up and possibly finish mid-table as there is a lot of dross in the league.

Edit - they desperately need a striker!

Rodrigo can play upfront, wouldn't want to rely on him though if I was a Leeds fan. What might cost them though is that Bielsa is stubborn and his insistence on Bamford is weird because as you know he's just shit. You only have to look at that FA cup against Arsenal the over year though to see that they'll be fine, they're a more developed side now compared to then and they'll batter worse opposition.

If he signs then I’ll lose a lot of love for football really

I’d also like to know why this is.

Personally I’d love it if he comes to England, hopefully we get to see him play somewhere other than Barca.

Surprised so many of you think Messi signing is going to trip up Man City on FFP. They've already cheated the system once, and set a legal precedent to run roughshod over UEFA in the process. They can, quite frankly, do what they want at this point. FFP is dead for anyone with the money to hire decent lawyers.

I want to see Messi in the Prem from a purely football-based standpoint. Since I have next to no interest in European leagues, La Liga and the El Classico sideshow included, I've actually managed to avoid watching him all these years, except for his underwhelming performances for Argentina. I'd like to see what all the hype is about, and more importantly whether or not he really is capable of carrying a team on his own.

I have Juve supporting friends at work here who think Ronaldo joining them has been a mistake and upset their team's balance, but they spanked the league thanks to him by the sounds of it. I guess it depends what the Man City fans' priorities are.

Did Man City really cheat the system? UEFA f ucked up their investigation as judge, prosecutor and jury. Man City are hardly innocent but inconsistencies with their sponsorship income 7 years ago isn’t them ripping up the FFP rulebook.

I’d love to see Messi play in England, the problem is I don’t want to see him play for any of the clubs that could afford him.

Interesting to see how Doherty will do at Spurs, never seen him play in a back-four, so wonder how he'll adapt.

He's probably not bothered how he'll do, just wanted to go anywhere to avoid wearing that away shirt.

What's this the EU? We vote again and again until we get the result we want?

Pretty shocking really, will just give an advantage to the bigger teams, much like it did post lockdown.

How else are Chelsea going to be able to fit all of their shiny new ££ players on the pitch?

agreed. The way i see it is a hard salary cap on weekly wages.  That will encourage competition, academy and be better for alll of football not just the "haves". Limit squad sizes and the ability to hoard /loan out players. Will never happen though.

Messi going to ManC would be weird, for all the money they seem to spend they still feel like an aging squad. Messi wouldn't change that. Has Pep' ever shown he can rebuild a winning squad? Most of the teams he's gone to and succeeded were already largely built (or at least the core was already in place). And that includes ManC, right?

I wish our first game was a 3pm Saturday kick off. I hate early-ish Sunday games on the tv.

Bizarre. And such a low fee too.

Also just seen that Mooy has joined a club in Shanghai, which is a surprise.

Apparently Mooy had a 4m release clause.

Who have Leeds signed? Costa?

I think Leeds could surprise a few on this forum, but they could equally implode spectacularly. A few times last season Leeds showed they are very suited to a counterattacking style, and I think Bielsa will prepare them well. But a couple injuries, and their already average squad will be terribly exposed.

I think they’ll be solid / lower to mid table.

I don’t see them imploding like Fulham did.

According to L'Equipe Brendan Rodgere is the 8th highest paid manager in Europe (£8m). That was before he signed a new deal. He's better paid than Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel - that's right, he earns more than a CL winner and a CL finalist.

Everton are paying Ancelotti £11.5m a year. Unbelievable that both us and Everton are paying our managers elite wages.

Would it be wise to let him go at the end of his contract if he doesn't do anything spectacular?

He won’t reach the end of his contract ......we will either sack him before then or he will leave for a bigger job .....

Isn't there a massive buyout if we wanted to sack him? I think the bigger job is the only way he leaves in the next 2 or 3 years.
