Sensible move, which i'm surprised anyone is whinging about.

He's 5th/6th choice CM. To sign better, you're likely looking at £10m+, which can instead be put towards the areas we desperately need to strengthen, namely out wide. That's not even mentioning the bonus of having a tidy enough player who knows his role is that of a squad player and who therefore won't rock the boat. He clearly seems a popular guy amongst the players.

Wtf? You'd be able to get much better than him for way less than £25mil. Praet is much better than him and came in for £18mil last season.

Matty James isn't any worse than him either (although is even more injury prone).

He's our 6th choice central midfielder after Tielemans, Maddison, Ndidi, Praet and Choudhury.

You'd be better to give one of the youth or development players that role.

No doubt he's on decent wages as well given he was our record signing at the time.

He's been one of the biggest wastes of money in the club's history.

He's effectively a replacement for Ndidi or Choudhury, the other players you've mentioned are irrelevant.

Ball winning midfielders with stamina are very pricey. Our style works when we have a player constantly winning the ball back. There's no way we could just rely on Ndidi and Hamza all season. Especially given Hamza's disciplinary. In europe he'll be perfect to play that role against lesser sides.

And if you think he's been one of the biggest wastes of money then im guessing you don't remember or weren't around during Peter Taylor and Sven.

Pretty sure people are never satisfied 😂. Good deal for both parties, we have cover for a year then can sell on. Also if he doesn’t play much he has the opportunity to leave sooner for first team football if he wants it, rather than on a long Contract which will cost more in a transfer to buy out.

He’s never let us down when he’s played, is a steady premier league player for us to have a a back up plus cup games plus against the weaker sides in Europa. Wilf can’t play every game!

Can we all just stop and look at some of the utter shit in the top 8 that is backup midfield players.

At Spurs they've got Skipp and Gedson Fernandes, United have got Fred and McTominay, Arsenal have got Willock and Torreira, Wolves have got Gibbs-White.

Unless you are Manchester City and have endless money to throw at £30m+ cover players (Cancelo an obvious example), your starting XI is always going to be significantly better than your reserves.

Mendy is a steady player and is cheap. His job isn't to take Wilf's place because there's not a player as good as Wilf out there that would come here.

Don't think he was ever leaving was he? He just hadn't signed up the new contract yet, was clearly considering his options and who can blame him.

Solid, dependable, if unspectacular player and puts a bit of pressure on that DM spot in the side as well as allowing for rotation with a lot of matches to play this year.

In truth, as has been said elsewhere, we're getting above ourselves if we think our backup players and arguably 5/6th choice midfielders are going to be much better than Mendy, especially when he's a steady, known entity who has already settled in!

He looks average playing alongside Wilf but neither of them are someone to unlock defences.

Hes a decent player to call upon if wilf gets injured or closing out the last 20 minutes of a match.

If slimani goes is he the last player left from the 2016 summer signings?
