The game plan seemed to be similar to man city. The problem there was that Liverpool even with 4 key players out are a level above man city and that the gameplan is completely busted if you go 2 goals down. Didnt help that so few of our players played even reasonably well. Most teams will lose to them this season, making the top 4 is not dependent on this game and our next few games against the dross of the division are far more important. As long as we get points in those games we can write this one off.

We were wary of the Mane and Robertson overloads so had Fofana on Mane the whole game. Unfortunately Albrighton over-committed against Robertson to give a free cross to Jota for 2-0 and game over, so we failed to contain that threat even with our tactics.

 

The system was the same (3412) but with differences to individuals in terms of how they should play. E.g. this time round we didn't use our spare man at the back to drive forward with the ball as often.

 

With these teams, Man City play centrally, whereas the others play wide. In the case of Liverpool, they are the best of all of those teams from wide areas, despite missing Alexander-Arnold.

 

For me the biggest difference in this game compared to the others was that Liverpool's zonal pressing was far superior to the other teams, and whereas in the other games Mendy and Tielemans could play out of it, we struggled all game to turn the press and counter down the other end. We did manage it a few times, but were a lot less effective.

 

At the end of the day, to a man they were better than us. JJ probably the only outfield player for us that had a good game. Depressing to see us get beaten that easily, but there is a huge gulf between the sides we still have to cross.

This was the core for Liverpool's win. 

 

Their midfield cramped ours, meaning Mendy, Tielemans, Maddison couldn't find pockets of space and interplay like in other games they've profited from. They were all over us like a rash and we felt suffocated. When the midfield don't have control of the game it's very difficult for us to create and threaten.

Lost to a very good squad tonight. 

I don't honestly think that any of the team truly believed we'd win tonight. 

 

The game, from Leicester's point of view, was to win the midfield battle. 

 

We lost that battle totally. 

 

Work will be doublely shit in the morning 🙁

Also credit where it's due, the way Liverpool are so adept at running their press, irrespective of the personnel they use is incredible. Klopp is making a name for being one of the best Premier League coaches of all time because of it.

It's not necessarily about going to these places and believing we can win, it's about making it as horrible and uncomfortable as possible. We made it too easy for them.

 

Rodgers does a lot of good things but we lose far too many matches with limp displays lacking belief or determination.

I'm not sure the set up was the issue tonight, more the fact that Jonny Evans scores a beauty in the wrong net in the first 20 and  after that no one seems to have be able to control a football James Justin aside

To a large extent I agree. But there’s Quite a few teams who I’d say we were superior in quality too that will give Liverpool more problems than we do at Anfield.

Last season we barely beat any of the usual top six and still almost got top four. Like people have been saying it isn’t these games that will divine our season, it is the ones against the weaker sides. We blew it last season because we couldn’t beat Watford brighton or Bournemouth towards the end of the season... it isn’t because we got beat by Liverpool twice and Man City

Nice post and well described. 

 

It's an old cliché, but you learn more from losing than winning. Again, manager and players will - in a way - look forward to deconstructing what went wrong and how to address those failings. 

 

We'll end up a better team for tonight's humbling experience.

A couple of players in the backline had an off day and it contributed to us not being able to break their press and if you don't do that, you dont score against them and it's only a matter of time... simple as that. 

 

Players are going to have bad days, nothing we can do about that but move on.
