His decision making in relation to when to close and when to drop is absolutely terrible. He panics and closes down when there is little point (see Watford’s goal yesterday) and drops when there is a chance to intercept.

Add to that the fact he gets turned and beaten by pretty much anyone who runs at him and it really is baffling as to why we signed him.

Did we though? I thought when Fofana got crocked basically the day before the season started we pretty much signed whatever centre back with a bit of experience was available. Very much an emergency signing.

Well that doesn't make the decision to sign him any less poor. £15m for a sixth or seventh choice centre back? What you're describing is a panic buy, which rarely, if ever, works.

A loan, gamble on a younger player or just riding through would have been other options. Instead we've essentially hamstrung ourselves in the January market because we wasted this money in the summer

We have conceded 83 goals in our last 56 league matches , the high line football has cost us dearly and I think Rodgers is at last getting the message. There can be no consistency if we continue to play that way. This worked for a while with Puel and Rodgers but not anymore.

Can we just appreciate that block yesterday. I know that there probably was an offside in the buid-up, but Jannik still deserves credit for that block.

You can see what it meant to him too. He has a little celebration right after.

Yeah noticed that too. Was really hoping he would score from a set-piece to get even more confidence back. We need him to perform over the next month.

The low block comments appear largely accurate.

I thought he played very well early season v Man City at home when we deployed (or were forces into) a low block.

He's a decent, capable PL and international defender in the right circumstances.....a bit of a run (which he'll get for the next 4 or 5 weeks)  is perhaps exactly what he needs

The only CBs we have who can safely play a high line are Soyuncu and Fofana and possibly Justin. Their ability to turn and recover is far better than our other options. If we need to use our other options we cannot use that tactic.

Playing a high line isn't the sole reason we've conceded 80ish goals in 50ish games.

It's more the fact we aren't properly coached how to play with, and without the ball, whilst playing with that high line.

We don't press as a team, in a structure, we just press with one or two from the front, who get passed around, and then the opposition are running straight at our defence.

Whilst in possession, we push too many bodies forward, and really struggle to transition from defence, which is why we see so often, the two centre backs just passing to one another.

With his severe lack of pace though, but decent passing, Vestergaard when played should always be the one of the partnership who plays higher, but oddly he seems to be the one who is often covering, which doesn't work.

Choudhury showed yesterday just how important that recovery pace is, and Hamza isn't the quickest.

Certainly not pulled any trees up yet but he's clearly lacking confidence.  We're up the creek without a paddle regarding centre backs so just get behind the fella.

He’s a bit of a scapegoat again. He hasn’t been good at all, but either have other ms around him. Cags has been a bit iffy all season too.

Saturday he was far better in a 3, it also didn’t help that Daley Campbell struggled next to him in the first half.

Half of those goals came from corners!

Will be interesting to see if the going back to basics from the past couple of games continues to help breed a bit of confidence in the defence as a whole

You know when you have a nightmare where someone is chasing you and you've lost the ability to run properly or at all......thats what I'm reminded of when I see Vestergaard run

Setting the bar low that Saturday was one of his best games (and the first time we've won when he's started).

Southampton conceded 128 goals from 19/20 - 20/21 and we thought let's sign half of their defence. Is Congerton a spicehead? If he's comatose on a keyboard that would explain it.

...not quite true, he would have been viewed as immediate cover for Fofana, this was not a signing we were looking to consign to the bench!!!

We were looking at the possibility of bringing him in the season before, this was not so much as a panic buy, more a judgment call, made by the recruitment group.

We knew what we were getting, it is our fault if we choose to play him in such a way that exposes his deficiencies.

His lack of pace and turning is a huge problem. I don't necessarily think he's a bad defender but you can't play a high line with him in the team.

not being able to turn pretty much makes you a bad defender lol it's one of the main things you need as a CB or as a human in general.

Yes, it wasn't me who essentially described it as a panic buy (you need to look at what I was replying to for context)

I was just trying to demonstrate that if it was a considered signing then it was a very poor choice. If it was a panic buy then it's a poor choice.

Whichever way you look at the Vestergaard signing - it was a very poor one - it happens!

Benkovic is nearly as tall, quicker and younger so why did we buy him? It really annoys me when we can't get an answer on straightforward questions.

We have already heard as to why Benkovic isn't being used - personal reasons.
