I respect someone's right to a political view. But not where it impacts on someone's safety or risk/harm. 

 

What Lineker did doesn't impinge on his ability to present MOTD nor did it bring the BBC into disrepute, in my opinion.

Don't care what people think of him, I for one will miss him but like many have said think MOTD is dead now we have the Internet and let's be honest they will only ever talk about the "Big 6" now.

I met him once when we played Brentford in the FA Cup at Griffin Park. 
I was working my last game at the Bees, my boys were LCFC mascots and Gary was great with them. Chatted to them about their favourite players and their dad being old as he (me) remembered him playing for LCFC. Had a photo with them, smiled wished them well. Lovely it was.

We’ve all spoken rubbish about our club. Fact is if he didn’t step in, we wouldn’t have a club for him to talk rubbish about.

I’m not a hater I’ve always liked lineker. Ok I’m not exposed to him as much you all in the UK. Leicester doesnt produce a heap of home grown national celebs so when we do produce we should appreciate it.. He may be many negative things to some people but he’s always shown his pride of being a Leicester lad. He did his part in saving our club when it needed it. As MOTD he helped make it iconic for so many years. Whoever follows will find it tough to make the same impression. Just my opinion.

She is an absolutely atrocious presenter. She is absolutely a diversity hire and I think plenty of people cut her slack because of her looks. She started out as a reasonable pundit but then she starting offering nothing insightful compared to others (which is quite an achievement given how low the bar is).

 

I remember watching her and Claire Balding present the Olympics highlights and the difference in their competency as broadcasters was absolutely staggering (and I don't particularly like Claire Balding). It's one thing for her to be a pundit, but presenting is a completely different game.

A Leicester fan's opinion of Lineker really outs someone politically. Are you a rabid right winger, or are you a rational human being who, even if you don't agree with him politically, can appreciate everything he did for us, and his esteemed broadcasting career.

 

The same hypocrites who worship at the alter of Peter Shilton and Sharron Davies because the expression of their political views is - astonishingly and coincidentally - absolutely fine.

His political views are not extreme at all, he just doesn’t like injustice and suffering and will stand up for the downtrodden - just what a normal person should be imo. Top bloke. Much prefer that to him being a weasel personally. Unfortunately that just doesn’t fit with the regime. They’ll probably recruit someone from the register to take his place.

 

Arguably the most famous person to come from Leicester. Will miss watching a local legend present my football highlights on a Saturday night.

He’s always been massive advocate for Leicester. I don’t understand how people don’t get that.

 

Some of his political opinions don’t align with mine, but then again 50% of the country don’t. I don’t dislike them or wish them ill. Such is life.
 

 

Yet people watch it anyway.  It is interesting that the chat, the magazine discussion is what keeps people watching, not just the highlights.  Balance is key though, went too far the other way when it was briefly on ITV.  Hopefully they don't break that.

Yes, I always like the program Kamara and Ben Shepard did on Sunday morning I think it was, similar in a way discussing the games and a bit of a guest to talk along with.

Everyone calling for Chappers underestimate how much Lineker uses his past experience as a world class striker to add to the viewing experience. He’s not a just a brilliant host who asks questions to the more knowledgeable guests, he’s been there and done that at the highest level and that gives him so much more as the host. Chappers is a good tv host but very much the question asker who has to realistically get the guests to provide all of the experienced answers as he’s not got that previous history as a pro. It’s a big loss for the BBC from their flagship footy programme in my opinion.

I agree with you mostly but I do think Chappers is good at taking a backseat and asking the footballers pointed questions about the game/decision making

Most of us wont be watching MOTD much after this season if you only watch it for City anyway!!!

Match of the Day still gets more viewers than 90% of live matches - for the record only 10 PL live matches reached 3million viewers last season (which was actually the most in a season on record) whereas MOTD regularly gets that. Last weekend it still got over 3miion views. This idea that it’s on its last legs doesn’t actually match up to viewing habits. Just because some forever online people don’t watch it anymore because they watch it on YouTube, it’s still a large watched programme and will continue for a long time yet.

He been doing it for such a long time and is a match of the day legend but all things come to an end. He still has a lot of work with other channels and other projects he can do. Doing something so long it does get a bit stale and things now and again need freshening up. Obviously he gets a lot of stick for his political views and maybe the bbc thought that was becoming more and more of a distraction. He's been extremely lucky to have been paid millions for something he loves to do and has had a great footballing and broadcasting career.
