Am I the only one out of sync with this view.

Less analysis and more of the action please

Match of the Day should show fewer Premier League highlights and more analysis, says BBC chairman Samir Shah.

The BBC has a deal to show highlights of top-flight matches until the end of the 2028-29 season, with Match of the Day broadcast on Saturday evenings and MOTD2 on Sunday evenings.

Shah told the Sunday Times, external that many fans had watched Premier League goals and action before Match of the Day is broadcast.

Shah said the show "should not be built around highlights".

He added: "It should be built around analysis and examination of the match to give viewers a deeper insight."

Although the BBC is politically independent, its chairperson is appointed by the government.

In his role as chair of the BBC's board Shah is charge of upholding and protecting the BBC's independence and ensuring the BBC fulfils its mission to inform, educate and entertain.

Match of the Day celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024.

It is hosted by former England striker Gary Lineker, who will step down at the end of this season.

With better analysts, yes.

I understand the viewpoint, as the highlights are available on YouTube an hour after full time.

I've not watched MOTD in about 4 years, it's way past my bedtime.

Yeah, I just read that. Spectacularly out of touch.

I'm someone that actually likes a lot of statistical and tactical analysis and I'd happily watch a show that went in to a decent amount of (accurate) detail on both.

But not only do I fully accept I'm in the minority but BBC's pundit team just isn't qualified or cut out to do it and they'd need a complete overhaul of their approach to pundits. There's quite a lot of good content creators out there who aren't former players doing solid analysis with both data and video and it'd be interesting to see a mainstream TV show go in that direction.

But if more analysis means more of Micah Richards and Alan Shearer pretending to have a clue then I'd watch it even less than I do now.

Extended highlights is the best thing they offer and even that's under threat by the SkySports youtube channel now.

I do think they need to shake the MOTD formula up a bit but this definitely isn't it.

Youve said what I didn’t need too. It’s clear it’s his own personal preference because I suspect any focus group woukd say more footy, less chat. You’d have to look at how many people leave their TV at half time of live games

Problem is the analysis largely tells people what to think. Easier to explain why the big 6 are the best and they can focus their analysis on their star players, picking that one moment of 'magic' when they likely dross for the rest of the game. Just show as much of the games as possible.

'Analysis', i.e. rage bait.

Yeah, he has definitely seen the tedious Sky Sports stuff and wants to clip it for hits like they do.

TV people: I know what fans want - remove all those filthy clips of non big 6 teams playing games, replace them with more ex Manchester United players talking about Manchessteryanited for 2 hours. Perfect!

I actually think it should be longer with more of both, only the featured game / first 2 get full highlights and analysis the rest get limited highlights and 1 sentence analysis something like "leicester were poor today there in touble" then move on.

Most people nowadays don't watch live and record or watch on player and just skip through to the bits that there interested in anyway. If every game got properly covered with full highlights and analysis I would watch more often even if I just watched the couple of games I was interested in

And reluctantly or patronisingly highlight a player from a 'lesser' club to tout to one of the favoured few. One that 'deserves' to play for a club they like.

The biggest issue I have with the show is too much waffle. The reason I barely watch MOTD now is that Sky's highlights have ZERO analysis.

I don't need the same thing replaying 6 times, the same old tired tropes about VAR - when it was that show that demanded we have it and chastised refs every week - and the quippy jokes about the teams the pundits are pretending to support this week.

Hopefully it gets a new lease of life when Lineker is put out to pasture.
