Let's have a TV shows thread.

I can't remember if there's any Gomorrah fans in here (always stuck me as something I thought you'd enjoy @MattP) - incredibly, incredibly dark Naples crime drama and one of my favourite shows of the last few years.

Whilst waiting for Season 4 and the Ciro origins movie they're doing, there's been a bit of a hole really as there's not too much like it.

But Netflix have released a series called Suburra set in Rome and its been really, really good so far. It's a bit of a middle ground between Gomorrah and House of Cards, multi layered with both a criminal and political element running side by side.

Being Rome, its not quite as gritty as being set on a Naples housing estate and there isn't quite the same level of violence (though there's still plenty in it, just less action in general) but its very well paced in its own right and its never, ever slow.

Gomorrah is notable for having as close to zero humour as you can get in a show, it was as bleak as it gets with few jovial characters at all. Suburra isn't a comedy by any stretch but there are a couple of lighter moments, comparable to the Wire or the Sopranos in occasional humour. There's a really fun, enjoyable dynamic between the three "main" characters that form the unlikely focal trio that's cracked me up a few times.

It's well written, well directed and really well performed, I've binged through it in a couple of days.

Would highly recommend it to any fans of gang dramas and the mafia.

Netflix originals can be hugely hit and miss, for every Stranger Things there's a bunch of shit teen dramas or knock off American crap but this is definitely coming from the House of Cards end of the scale. I'd go as far as go say I've enjoyed it as much as Narcos season 1.

I’ve watched the first 3, It’s starting to get good.

Aye,  from what I have heard it is that kind of series which started off slowly but picked up rapidly towards the end.   Things will start to progress significantly around episode 6.  I will go it a go then cheers.

Heard some hype about Haunting of The Hill House,  have anyone on here watched it yet?

Episode 1 was a good start.  Episode 2 was slower going.  Episode 3 I haven't seen yet.

Apparently gets better and better as it goes on although the final episode is a let down.

From what I've watched, I was impressed.

I've heard it described as a slow burner.

Mm, I didn’t like the first one, but I enjoyed the Boggs one even though it was a reboot. The one from last night was a bit meh for me. Took too long to really get going which was unfortunate cos the idea was good.

The boggs one I really wanted to love but I didn't. Prefer those little characters in small doses, Mac's mum is better when she only grunts or shouts.

I thought the Boggs episode was great, proper skewering of the all-female reboot fad.

Trying to watch Making a Murderer’s second series but I fear It’s Always Sunny has ruined it. Every time any one of them says “yeah” I just think of Charlie on cat tranquillisers.

This is so true lol

Decent second season. I still don't know what to believe. All I know is Brendan's trial and conviction is bullshit

There are so many series out there that I'm amazed so many of you can watch several episodes let alone seasons of poor viewing in order to get to a good episode/season.

If it's lucky I'll give a series 2 episodes, maybe only 20 minutes before ditching it. Life's too short and I doubt I've really missed out on too much.

Finished Maniac yesterday.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, something slightly sinister about it, there's the constant question where the series will lead you to.

Don't expect a lot of action, it's a rather dialogue-heavy franchise, little CGI but it's all done very effectively and helping establishing the dark-ish mood in a somewhat parallel universe to ours. The retro feel with regards to the technology on display takes some getting used to it at first.

Great characters in it, too. Dr. James Mantleray (Justin Theroux) stands out in particular. His introduction is priceless. lol

On a sidenote, I would've liked to see somebody else play the role that ultimately went to Jonah Hill. He comes across as overbooked, he's everywhere.

Anything to take away the pain of watching us play is good.

Finished Suburra.

I'd row back on the claim that I enjoyed it as much as Narcos, the second half tailed off a little bit and didn't quite live up to the first five or six episodes.

Still recommend it quite comfortably though, really solid crime drama and the Italians pull off mob thrillers with pretty self explanatory more authenticity than most others.

Didn't realise it was the prequel to a film, have to dig that out.

Good show I’m waiting for season 2 but not sure if it’s coming out?
