Diabate - What should we do?

I'll be brutally honest, he's had a shit pre season and looks nowhere near Premier League standard, right now he looks like a player who could even struggle with the Under 23's, Josh Gordon and Layton Ndukwu done more in 30 mins than Diabate did in 75.

His form is a cause for concern, especially with the way our wing options are, fail to get anybody in we'll have to rely on Gray and Albrighton or maybe even give The Moose a shot if he's still here by then.

I'd put a poll up if it bloody worked but it doesn't so...

What would you do with Diabate...

Gamble and give him a chance?

Loan him out?

Send him with the Under 23's?

Puel loves him. He’ll be starting plenty next season

He won't be when Puel's sacked by October ;)

I think a lot of people got over excited from his debut performance.

He shows great energy on the pitch and looks lively, but needs a lot of work.

No doubt the potential is there, and Claude can obviously see that.

Personally I don't think he is of Premier league quality yet and could do with u a 6 month to a year loan to a Championship level club or to a bottom half premier league side.

Thing is, we do not have an awful lot of options, should he go.

Depending on how many high-profile wingers we manage to get in, I‘d send him out on loan to a Championship club.

I think he came into the first team too early after signing for us and needs to prove himself on a stage better suited for his talent atm.

Sell. Only ever seen him put in one good performance and that was against Peterborough.

Our wide options are horrifically poor.

He’s Puel’s boy and it seems likely to me Puel will persevere with him at least for the first half of the season. Clearly he believes in Diabate and from his perspective probably wants to show both club management and fans that he can pluck a player from a lower league and turn him into a star.

Last season I think it’s harsh to say Diabate was only good against Peterborough as there were many games where he came off the bench and looked really good. However, I would agree that in preseason he’s gone backwards! Last year I felt he was similar to Gray except he had better game sense / decision making but worse physical attributes. This preseason the most frustrating thing has been that he’s literally picking the wrong decision every time. I think he’s trying too hard to impress knowing that with Mahrez gone there’s a direct route into the first team.

I don’t think he should be loaned out because he’s come from another country and needs to be integrated into the group. However, on current form he cannot be a starter so should remain a bench / impact player. If he’s still around the same level in January then with a year in England behind him then it might be time for a loan  move.

I think Puel trusts young players and wants to give them a chance. If we signed a Mahrez replacement it could negatively imoacf Gray and Diabate’s confidence whereas this way they will feel like they have a chance. And look at all of the youngsters against Valencia... they all smashed it. I’m sure a lot of fans don’t like the “learning on the job” aspect but that’s our status as a club and it’s worked well with players like Maguire and Ndidi and even Mahrez to an extent.

If if it was me I’d retain him as an impact player but also sign a young prospect for between the 20-30m mark. A wide man version of Maddison if you will to give us additional depth and options. With the window almost closed I think our incomings are probably done though so we’ll have to see what happens. Despite currently being off the boil it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that by the end of the year one of Gray or Diabate is a key first team player. They both have potential.

Skilful but raw, he runs into too many blind alleys and loses possession too often. There's a good player in there but he shouldn't be starting Premier League games yet. A loan to the championship would possibly benefit him and us.

It’s pre season. Wait and see how he does in the proper games before shipping him out surely!

He was shit in the league last year as well. He's fast and runs around a lot. Great.

He's also majorly raw, had **** all end product even in France and its a mystery we ever signed him in the first place.

Our rivals are all signing established quality wingers and we've got two unproven kids and an ageing Marc Albrighton.

It's absurd.

I like him, a low risk signing financially, he’s young and would benefit from a loan move to the Championship to get used to the pace and physicality of English football, definitely has some potential but where he fits in is another question.

i agree he would be very good in the championship and could really turn him into a quality player however as we have failed to sign any wingers in the transfer window there is no chance in him going out on loan.

I like his attitude and I think he will be alright eventually but if we are relying on him next season we're ****ed. Being loaned out would be good for him but we dont want to replace Riyad it seems.

Albrighton is 28, hardly a pensioner.

Has to play on the right to stand any chance of creating enough time on the ball to ever do anything. He's so far out of his depth right now and it's alarming he's going to play very regularly.

Raw talent and will only improve, but he shouldn't be our first choice left winger if we want to do anything this season.

Pull your finger out of your arse and signing someone, Rudders.

Was probably a bit harsh tbh. He seems a lot older than he is because he's looked permanently knackered for the last eighteen months.

I do like Albrighton, I just think he's another player whose strengths we don't play to.

It struck me how often he chose the wrong option yesterday...my feeling was that this was his last chance to really show something, and he blew it.

So, the solution (unless buying someone new) is Gray, for now.

I’d be happy with a New RW, Gray, Ndukwu, Albrighton & Diabate as our options on the wing. I guess one of them can be back up for Maddison/Okazaki competing for the 10 position.

Imo there is a similar pattern to Diabate’s performance this pre-season and Grays in the summer after we won the league. The season prior, Gray looked like a team player. Fighting for a cause, keeping things simple and doing what the manager asks.

Then in pre season, he stared trying all these fancy flicks and trying to be too clever. He forgot how to be a team player. A similar situation is happening with Diabate, hopefully Puel can address this issue.

It was Diabate's pass that found Maddison for our goal against Valencia.

[Edit]: He moved up the wing, passed it to Ndidi, then Ndidi found Maddison.

He had some poor pre season matches. Then improved against Valencia.
