So would I, I think Ricardo will be moved on and possibly even as soon as this January.

...another player suffering from playing with a back three!!!

Much better as a Right-back than a Wingback, he maybe a professional player but he can't be getting much joy from playing in the position we are asking him to play.

He has the tendency to be the only one (short of Vardy)to get his head done and attack the opposition, if he leaves we are losing a massive asset.

Yeah, I don't think any of our full backs look as good as wing backs and I've always thought that's purely down to their limitations rather than those around them but then again when you see what Chelsea have managed to get from the likes of Alonso and Azpilicueta when they aren't dynamic full backs then maybe it's equally those around them that defines the success of playing that role. You need to create space for them put it that way and we don't do that, yet when we play teams that play wing backs we seem to allow their wing backs a load of time and space.

Ricardo's USP is arriving late from deep on to the ball or picking it up and through clever movement from others and great skill he runs teams ragged, as a wingback that's harder to do and absolutely requires teammates to pull the opposition apart.

It's a distinct problem.  All of our fullbacks aren't nearly as good as wingbacks, and our manager has convinced himself that our most indispensable attacking player (Kelechi) can only be on the pitch if we have a back five.

I would love to see if we could get 4-4-2 going properly.

Schmeichel

Castagne/Ricardo

Evans

Fofana/Soyuncu

Justin

Lookman

Ndidi

Tielemans

Barnes

Iheanacho

Vardy/Daka

To play this the essential player is Ndidi, I think without him the 2 man midfield gets exposed by quite a lot of opposition but Soumare may grow to be able to do it and offer more on the ball too.

Exactly this.

Except Maddison, lookman, Barnes and maybe even ricardo  interchangeable in the wider midfield berth

After looking at how long the recovering players have taken to get back to form after long term injuries, I'm not overly confident we're going to see peak JJ or peak Fofana this season let alone soon.

Obviously hope I'm wrong.

Ndidi has been well below his best this season which means it has been essential that Barnes, Lookman and Iheanacho contribute defensively and this has not really happened and that means Youri needs to defend a lot more. Our CBs take a lot of criticism but they are so often exposed.

Looks a good team and it's why I think criticism of Rodgers for not knowing his best team and formation are unfair. Three of those have been unavailable for periods. He'd love to be able to have Justin, Fofana and Ndidi fit.

That's entirely the most realistic scenario.

I think James Justin missing has been underestimated. He was probably on for player of the season and playing almost every game. His consistency was above anyone else I can think of. Amazing amount of ground covered and chipping in with goals and assists and playing where ever we needed him to sometimes two or three positions in a game. A lot has been made of missing Fofana and rightly so but Justin's contribution was massive. Sadly i think it will take ages to get back to those levels but i hope he does. Seems a really nice bloke who deserves everything for the effort he puts in.

My only concern is everyone's expectations is that he'll just slot back into the form he was showing last season. He had a bad injury and like Ricardo, I think it will take time mentally and physically for him to get back to that form.

I don't think anyone is expecting him to hit the ground running, let alone everyone. You hope beyond hope he'll be effective from the off but chances are it'll be a few months before he gets back to the player he was, at least, seems most everyone is aware of that.

I'd be worried if he hit the ground running, there's a serious risk of further injury there!

Totally agree!

He had a very good run at the start of last season playing wing-back or even as a third centre-back.

I do hope he's fully ready when he does return, but we're going to be a lot better off when he does.

At his best, it would take Castagne and Ricardo to be at theirs to bump him from the starting XI.

And if we go with a back three and we start the two above as wing-backs, it'd be so much more flexible having Justin (an attack-minded full-back who can also defend well) in one of the wide CB roles. Just look at how well Kyle Walker plays in that position for England, using his pace to cover defensively and also providing an extra attack-minded player going foward to provide underlapping or overlapping runs.

Exciting times. I just hope he's ready when he does return.

People seem to think playing with a back 3 is defensive....They must have not watched us play after promotion when we were so good going forward after switching to a back 3.

Man City pretty much play with a back 3, the way Walker plays, so often he will just sit inside which allows Cancelo to bomb forward.

.............................Kasper

............Fofana......Evans......Justin

Ricardo.............................................Castagne

...........Soumare......Ndidi....Maddison

....................Daka.............Iheanacho

That doesn't look defensive to me.

Plenty of pace, energy and creativity.

Will be a massive boost to see him back. I think the harsh reality that many don’t like admitting on here is that Ricardo has been very poor recently. I love the guy but I am still unconvinced that he has recovered from his injury. I hope JJ can hit the ground running again. I also wonder as whether it’ll be unrealistic to see him back in the next week or so?
