Unabomber Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 I know the games against these guys last season were horror shows, but I think especially for the away game we just had a mare defensively. There was also the problem with the party boys being missing and the pre match team and tactics being completely disrupted. I think if we play with confidence and attack them and our defenders don’t play a high line then we might do well.

Sharpe's Fox Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 Antonio absolutely rinced Soyuncu in the home game last season when he peeled off to the right wing with Soyuncu playing quite high as a left centre back. Multiple times he left him in a heap on the floor. Play a back four. 2

He should be isolating until Monday evening but according to Brendan he isn’t infectious ?????? I noted that radio Leicester had to put out a tweet stressing that covid 19 is a highly contagious disease (or words to that effect) after they’d tweeted Brendan’s comments ….. strange indeed! If he tested positive after a PCR test then he’ll have to isolate for 10 days, irrespective of his vaccination status. I think he was left out for the Wolves game because he had a lateral flow test result, so who knows tbh

We tend not to get beat 3 games on the spin vs teams under Rodgers. Only the Manchester clubs and Liverpool have done so. I think we'll get a result. Absolutely frightening negativity from a growing proportion of our posters on here, you lot make me giggle. I think it stems from the manager absolutely cacking himself at home to Wolves

Haywood_6 Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 We can't afford to give away the chances we did to Wolves against these or we'll be walloped
lgfualol Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 Would take a point. Think we'll go with the below if Maddison has a knock, or maybe like this anyway. Schmeichel Rick Amartey/Vesty Soy Thomas Ndidi Tielemans Soumare Perez Vardy Barnes

RowlattsFox Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 We all fear their aerial threat but they done us in behind for fun last season. They are a good side, direct but not in a Burnley kind of way. But I think you can get at them defensively. Back 4 with Verstergaard in for Amartey and maybe the experience of Bertrand if available. Can see Soumare coming in for Maddison especially if not fully fit. I'd be tempted to play Iheanacho from the slight right, riskier from a work rate point of view but with the extra midfielder in there we can avoid to take it and play the extra goal threat.
coolhandfox Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 Anyone would think West Ham are the second coming of 1970 Brazil side, reading this thread. They did a job on us in the home and away game, sticking in a low block and hitting us on the break. Which we fell for hook line and sinker. We played a crazy high line in both games. I expect us to be a little more pragmatic in this one. 3 1
KFS Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 Kasper Ricardo Vestergaard Soyuncu Thomas Tielemans Ndidi Perez Iheanacho Barnes Vardy Let them have the ball, we should play on the counter. 2
Bert Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 There’s no way we’ll be able to afford to play a high line with Vestergaard. 2

Soyuncu has got a bit of pace but Vestergaard, for all his good points, is slow with the turning circle of a land rover. Armarty is better than some give him credit for but prone to the odd gaff. Why not therefore sacrifice one of them, I'd suggest Armarty, for a better midfield footballer who could stop us getting overrun in the first place? Two proper full backs and not makeshift wing backs would also help matters. No place for Perez in this, if Rodgers insists on a wide right player then Albrighton offers so much more in a game like this to help cover Ricardo. Edited 17 August 2021 by volpeazzurro 1

There's been quite a big shift in our tactics over the last 12 months in that we don't play a high line anymore, we play more of a "mid-line". Look at the game on Saturday, even in the first half we only start pressing the opposition when they get to the halfway line. That way the space between the back 4 and strikers is more compact. If we lose the ball in the final third, then we counter press to try and get it back, but if the opposition have a goal kick then whilst we do pick up players, we don't have the entire team pushed up like say Liverpool do. We used to do it at the start of Rodgers first full season but reigned it in last time round. It's for those reasons that I think Vestergaard can play as apart of a two in a 4231 if we need him to. His forward passing will help us build attacks in that formation as well. When we first signed Soumare my gut feeling was that it would be to play 433 in games like this, replacing either Maddison or Perez, with Maddison shifting out wide instead of Perez. I'd prefer 433 to 352, but I think it will be 352 as we ended the game last week with it. That said if we went 433 we could put Ndidi on Benhrama and still have the energy and muscle to match / outwork Rice and Soucek. It depends on if we think Soumare is ready to start or not if we do that. 1

He lacks pace, but that extra bit of quality around him from our boys added to his own defensive ability should be able to cover for that. Providing we play the offside trap well, we can pull it off. I wouldn’t change too much from what we’ve done in the last couple of games vs Man City and Wolves, apart from possibly Soumare in for one of Maddison or Perez for a bit more physicality in the middle and go 433. If we do what we did against Wolves we'll concede 4 or 5!!!. That second half was abysmal in every way!

Southampton fans say his biggest issue was that he didn't suit Hassenhuttls high line system because of his pace, it would be incredibly risky to try it with Vestergaard, that extra quality we have isn't going to be that effective at helping him out dealing with a ball over the top for him to chase down against Antonio West Ham took full advantage of us doing it last season, doing it again is just asking for trouble

We've looked very good at times but also ponderous and slow at others. The Wolves win was decidedly fortuitous. Sometimes an opponent just isn't a good match up for you and I get that feeling with West Ham. They are pretty obdurate defensively but break fast and use the long ball a bit using Antonio as a very effective battering ram up front. They are quite physical which we don't always seem to cope with and they have some very decent players. I'm confident they will score at least twice so then it is just a question of how many we can score. Could be quite a decent game but if we haven't learnt from last season we will lose. The good news is I'm generally crap at predictions!

But if we'd dropped 2 points against Wolves and got a draw against West Ham (a very decent result)!!.. We'd still be a point worse off when we lose on Monday. Phew... feel better now. 1
gurru991 Posted 17 August 2021 Posted 17 August 2021 Brendan & the management team will have quite a few selection decisions to make over the next few games. Daka, Soumare & Iheanacho will need game time & somehow he has to include them. I'm hoping that we play a back four instead of the back three which just doesn't seem to suit us but BR can be very stubborn, so who knows !! 2
