Seems incredibly convenient that his recoveries to fitness are aligned to international windows. Almost as if someone was dedicated more to rehab and recovery in the periods leading up to internationals. 1

He was a quality signing for £3.5 million and we got every pennys worth out of it. And to pre-empt some replies, no, as much as a legend Steve Walsh was for us he was never better than prime Jonny Evans. 1

He got injury after injury and his form deteriorated. In his first few seasons he was genuinely one of the best CBs in the league. Compare the value we got out of Evans compared to Soumare, Daka, Praet, Perez, Vestergaard and he was an absolute bargain and did a good job for us. It ended badly, but other CBs were brought into take over from him and hardly stepped up. 10
Mike Oxlong Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 With Young, Evans and rumours of them sniffing round Vardy it appears that Everton’s kit sponsors next season will be SAGA
lgfualol Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 Would be happy if he goes there, don't want him here on high wages. 1

But, as he was captain of the club he didn't set the right examples with his lack of commitment to the club. He was part of the malaise that set into the club and he has to bear that burden. 8
Spudulike Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 I think it was Tony Pulis that said he is one of those players that makes himself unavailable at the first sign of any slight niggle. Not sure why he was ever viewed as captain material.
Corky Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 He only wants to play for Northern Ireland. Unless Dyche forces him out there more than we did, I can't see the point.

Long Eaton Fox Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 Did great for us but too injury prone now and past his best. For £3.5m was was a bargain but now we move on.
gurru991 Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 If and it is a massive if . If he could stay healthy he is one of the smartest CB's in the game but unfortunately I'm not sure that healthy is possible.
Popular Post The whole world smiles Posted 13 July 2023 Popular Post Posted 13 July 2023 (edited) Sad too see him becoming a figure of ridicule by some on here. I feel like the injury thing is over blown and probably a perfect storm of a particularly injury hit last season, that Tony pulis podcast and of course a painful relegation. Before last season he played 138 games in 4 seasons for the mighty City. That's 34.5 games a season for 4 years hardly Darren Eadie! On his day was a truly fantastic player for us and in a long successful career we seemed to get his best years (before last season obviously). It was definitely the right time to leave though Where ever he ends up I personally wish him well. Edited 13 July 2023 by The whole world smiles 17 1

Seems like they are skint with an impending FFP trial coming up, which it's likely they will lose. I think what they are doing is the only thing they can do. And at the end of the day for how terrible they are, they still finished above us, and Dyche thrives in situations like this.
Sausages Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 He was relegated with WBA LCFC and next year, Everton.
lee7 Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 Quality defender when fit but thats the big problem keeping him fit! Seems to want to sit out with the slightest of injuries. When he played he organised the defence really well. He should never of been made captain though. One of the weakest and most uninspiring captains i can remember us having. Especially when you compare him to Kasper and Wes.

That's my take on it as well. His reputation in the last year at West Brom when also captain and they got relegated and comments certain managers have said about his low propensity to not wanting to play when carrying a niggling injury has left a bit of mark on him, but 2019/20 and 2020/21 he was immense for us and a complete bargain.

Haywood_6 Posted 13 July 2023 Posted 13 July 2023 If Evans had stayed fit last season and played more games, I honestly think we wouldn't of gone down. I think he's top class. I loved the signing when we made it back in 2018 as well. Sadly he spends more time on the treatment table than a football pitch now. And I don't think that will change. But good luck to him.
