It's bizarre that a goal can be given following a foul in the build-up, which occurs in the opposite penalty box, but which doesn't quite reach the threshold of a penalty-giving offence. In effect the team conceding the goal is being penalised twice, once for not getting anything for the foul on their player and secondly for the goal being allowed to stand.

No wonder the Egyptians were furious.

This is clearly a var protocol issue

we know that the bar for a penalty intervention is high. Clearly the bar for a build up foul is lower. (Yesterday or also the Congo v Uzbekistan). so some goals can be ruled out because there was a foul in the build up /when possession was taken whereas if that incident occurred in the penalty area, that has to be judged more harshly.

Straight unfair.  The only solution to that is if you’re looking at a possible foul in the build up to disallow a goal then that has to be judged at the same level as a var penalty award.  many of us assumed that’s what already happens but I’m not so sure now.

This was why Var was brought in, to somewhat protect certain teams. Egypt win this game without var simple as.

was a foul on the Argentine player but so far away from the final play you wonder how much impact it really had ?

And Salah is probably well used to getting those sort of fouls at the end generally

Mind you would a French ref really want Argentina to win ?

Guess if he is under pressure from others maybe so .

And there are Argentinian officials for the France game .

I mean let's be really honest, they're mostly just looking for an excuse to not have to admit they bottled a strong winning position and should have won extremely comfortably from 2-0 up.

It was like watching one of those Brendan Rodgers collapses.

They've only really got themselves to blame. I love a conspiracy theory as much as anyone and I'm sure Infantino would love a Messi to go as far as possible in an American world cup but I didn't really see anything unusually suspect in that game tbh.

Their goal was rightfully cancelled, even the neutral UK commentary team agreed with that. McCoist and Champion were sad a great goal for scratched out but said it was the right call. And the Argentina goals were pretty much fine besides a not-clear-and-obvious tussle.

Having twin brothers ranting at them during heated discussions must've really annoyed and confused the players in the dressing room at times...

As much as I dislike FIFA and Infantino, I'm not sure they can be blamed for the Egyptian goalkeeper having hands made of Ryvita.

And now I have the Spitting Image sketch of supermodels as breadsticks stuck in my head again - thanks... ("Where's my Ryvita?" *Snaps in half*)

Tbh, I'm amazed that the French referee didn't give Messi a second go at taking his penalty. Clearly the ref and his VAR mates didn't look hard enough for an excuse to have it retaken.

Entire '66 Cup Final popped on YouTube last night, skipped through most of it. That free-kick for the second German goal, their last minute equaliser, Jack Charlton heading the ball over Seeler... never ever a foul.

I've never heard world rankings cited as much as this world cup. The concensus before was they were misleading, now they are seen as gospel when determining who had the more difficult or easy run ins

I'm confused by the narrative.... the French refs WANT Argentina to be in the final, giving their countrymen the hardest possible game?

This appears to be a real story, the FBI are investigating the Argentinian FA over fraud and money laundering offences with about 300m being routed through US banks under investigation. They haven’t been charged with anything, yet.
