What I also like about that interview is that he’s not moaning that he wants to go home or doesn’t like it here. I get the impression that both Silva and Iborra seem unsettled in England or homesick. He on the other hand seems determined to make a go of it.

He was a lot better but I thought he was caught out of position quite a lot in the first half and was fortunate to have Albrighton there to cover for him.

The 2nd half he looked like he was pinned back for most of it and hardly got forward anyway which meant his defensive skills were put to the test and he excelled.

I'd agree with this, but would also point out that since Albrighton has come back into the team and RIcardo returned to right back, both players have improved, which has improved the team as a whole. I think as a combination they provide a good balance between defense and attack. Neither player is as good as Mahrez, but together we have two options for attacking play instead of just relying on Riyad. The only thing missing is a bit more goal output as both players are good enough to get 5 goals a season to make 10 between them.

Also as many are saying, when we were under the kosh, Ricardo passed every test thrown at him, whereas in earlier games like Bournemouth he capitulated.

Looked more assured defensively today than at any other point in the season. Plays so much better with Albrighton in front of him, gives him some cover when he goes forward. Such an exciting player to watch though, gives our attack an extra dimension with his pace and dribbling skills. Think he'll be a great asset for us for the remainder of this season.

I thought Ricardo was excellent yesterday but I do agree with this re Albrighton.

Think the main benefits to having Albrighton in the team are two fold: Firstly, his defensive work rate has allowed Ricardo to keep the attacking element to his game whilst also getting more up to speed with whats required from an EPL full back defensively. Albrighton-Ricardo on the right side offers a really nice balance. Secondly, having Albrighton in the side helps our attack - he has a great on-field relationship with Vardy and offers our best threat from crossing situations.

I think by the end of the season he'll be one of the best RBs in the league. I've lost count of the amount of key passes he has made which, with better finishing, would have seen him topping the assist charts for defenders. Seems to be getting better every game. Looks a good signing and has been well managed. Credit to Puel. X

Best game in a City shirt yesterday, Puel seems to have both full backs playing very strong defensively and attacking fluently as well...:appl:

It’s his defending that’s impressing me. Wins a lot of headers for his height, his pace means he doesn’t get skinned and his timing in the tackle is good. Still not the finished article but well on the way to being top drawer.

Not bad for someone who can’t defend...

I genuinely think sometimes players are tarred with a reputation which then they struggle to shake or which some fans cannot get out of their head leading to confirmation bias (Gray has a bad attitude, Ricardo cannot defend, etc).  For me, he has been a decent performer from the start.  A couple of wobbles but nothing to worry about and nothing you couldn't quite easily put down to a new league.  One of the first names on the team sheet at the moment for me.  X

Classic case of needing to give players time to find their stride, for which any Internet forum is going to fail miserably at. Ricardo was considered one of the best right backs in Portugal last season and had showed he could play in both the French and Portuguese leagues. He has Champions League experience for Porto and was selected for the World Cup. All the Porto fans said he was mad to come here and they felt he could play at a higher level, which I think is pretty obviously true but I hope he sticks with us!

Obviously not every signing will work out and we have a very poor record of signings from Spain and Portugal with Hernandez being sent back after six months, Iborra being a squad player but no more and Silva and Slimani failing to impress. However, I personally felt that Ricardo showed promise from the very off (see the early posts in this thread) and that after some adaptation time has shown his true quality. We get his best bits now, but without the individual errors that plagued him early doors. Iborra was the same (he started off looking very poor but then started impressing even if not on the same level) and though Slimani is considered a bust, he scored quite a number of goals for us. If anything Slimani was sent out on loan because he caused friction in the camp and he did not work out well when playing at the same time as Vardy. Silva is the only outlier and probably won't make it, though I remember in that 10 minute cameo he made on his debut looking awesome and getting us all excited so who knows even he may somehow turn it around.

Anyway for me the most exciting thing is that with Chilwell and Ricardo we have two top class full backs. Honestly I believe those two would be in the squad and possibly even the starting 11 for any of the teams above us currently. They have incredible engines, are good on the ball, are showing this season they can defend and are some of the more creative players we have. In the space of around 12 months as a club we've gone from being a club with static full backs to having two top class ones which is frankly excellent when you consider the total outlay. And you can see that the whole team benefits from it, Albrighton and Ricardo is a great combination and I don't think it's a coincidence that Gray looks far more dangerous this season as a result. Slowly slowly the 4-2-3-1 is starting to improve.

Next on the menu is James Maddison who is the missing piece in the jigsaw and whom scored a fabulous goal for us on Saturday. At Nice, Puel had the mercurial Hatem Ben Arfa who had his best ever season with Puel in charge. Puel's system had midfielders that were disciplined and kept their position including a certain Papy Mendy. This gave Ben Arfa the licence to roam around and focus on attack, which he did with devastating aplomb as seen in the goal below. You might also recognise some of the passing moves as similar to the ones we do now so you can see the style is clearly influenced by this team (passing out from the back, Mendy being the primary distributor in our own third, attacking together as a team), who coincidentally also had Ricardo in it. Madders is a young man, but if he could raise his game then trust me, we will have a very good team that will play some very nice stuff. I hope we see more signs of it as the season progresses!

Good post.  When you consider what Pep has spent on fullbacks you can see just how important they are to the modern game.  Early days of course but we seem to have two very good young fullbacks who should only get better.  Real feel the squad is shaping up under Puel.  X

so you're telling me a player getting a sustained run in the side has settled in and improved his level of performance?

Who would have thought that could happen? ...
