Arsene Wenger admits why Arsenal's Jamie Vardy bid failed despite offering "lot of money"

Arsenal tried to lure Jamie Vardy to the Emirates from Leicester nearly five years ago but the star striker chose to stay at the King Power Stadium and snub Arsene Wenger’s lucrative offer

 

Ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger did all he could to try and lure Jamie Vardy to north London in 2016.

But Leicester ultimately convinced their star striker to stay at the King Power Stadium and commit his future to the club.

 

The Foxes’ efforts paid off and they have reaped the rewards ever since with the £1m signing from Fleetwood arguably the best bit of business ever for a Premier League team.

Vardy, 34, was on the scoresheet for Leicester once again on Saturday afternoon as he netted the second in a 3-1 victory over reigning champions Liverpool.

It put Brendan Rodgers’ side second in the table, while Arsenal went into this weekend sitting in the bottom half.

 

The Gunners’ fortunes would arguably have been far more favourable over the past few years had they had Vardy up front under Wenger, Unai Emery or Mikel Arteta.

 

And the former Arsenal boss knows full well how quality a striker the ex-England hitman still is.

Speaking today around the Leicester and Liverpool game on beIN Sports, Wenger was describing Vardy and said: “Phenomenal, he’s always in the game.

 

“He looks like he doesn’t get mentally out the game. The great strikers I like are convinced somewhere they will score at some stage. That allows them, even when he misses a chance, to stay in the game.”

Asked by Richard Keys how close he was to getting Vardy at Arsenal, Wenger took a deep breath before answering, smiling: “I offered him a lot of money at the time.

“Leicester had just won the championship in 2016, and Srivaddhanaprabha at the time, who unfortunately after had the helicopter accident, did absolutely not want to lose him and they offered him a longer contract and approximately the same money, if not more.”

 

Arsenal tried to sign Vardy for £20m just before Euro 2016, and were prepared to bump Vardy’s wages up to six figures a week, but Leicester matched them.

There were believed to be concerns over him fitting into Arsenal’s team and style at the time too, although Wenger insisted: “We had more of the ball, yes, but still around the box, the timings of his runs, he finds the space.

“When you see the big strikers, they’re on the move when others stand still in the box, and he has that. You see they read (the game) earlier than others, they anticipate better, they understand quicker than other people what’s going on, and (he has) that quality of anticipation, that speed of understanding.”

I listened to Wenger talking to Richard Keys about this yesterday on BeinSport. He was really complementary of Vardy and basically said whilst he can be that striker that loves the ball over the top, he’s also deadly with his movement and the quality of his finishing. He spoke about how he offered big money but stated Leicester offered more and the late Kuhn Srivaddhanaprabha was desperate to keep him.
