No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

Love the posts on social media of 'they had to go to war, you just have to stay at home'.

If the reference is supposed to be WW2, an 80 year old year today would have been 5 years old when the war ended so anyone who fought in it would have to be at least 90 (for arguments sake) so it doesnt make sense at all.

Struggling to see why it doesn’t make sense.

Edit: Also I believe those particular posts are referencing the entire generation, not just the ones fortunate enough to still be with us. Which still number six figures.

London is the epicentre of this virus. I read somewhere that 600,000 commute in and out daily. Surely all the benefits of closing schools and pubs elsewhere is badly compromised by letting this continue.

The thing in Italy Spain and France could be genetics, pure conjecture I will admit, but if you look at the amount of people in a serious condition here it’s about 20 and the Germans have over 20,000 cases with five deaths. It may be there’s something in the Souther European DNA strains that make them more vulnerable to the auto immune reaction which is what does the damage.

Either way there has to be some reason for the massive difference in numbers being reported by different countries.

Two things. I'm glad someone called 'dario Rodriguez' has flagged up weak southern European Dna 😂

Second, are there  stats in how many smokers are in italy? The stereotype is certainly the espresso and ciggie style breakfast. Maybe puffing fags like chimneys for 60 odd years hasn't done them may favours

1035 new cases today. Grim.

I think we'll continue to see numbers like this until social distancing/lockdown is fully in place.

Given how people have been acting and heavily socialising and for how long it takes for tests to be done/results received, I can't see numbers going down. Hopefully in a couple of weeks it'll plateau like we've seen with China and then come down. But it needs discipline from ALL of the public. Not random idiots in groups still trying to go out to go to bars and parties etc.

Went shopping about mid-day today, headed into Tesco to get a few bottles of beer it was busy with plenty of empty meat and veg shelves. My plan was the butchers and grocers next door, came home much happier than my trip the other night which got me down. Limited to what he had left but next week we’re having homemade chilli, pork chops, liver and bacon, bacon and eggs, plus pizza baguettes. Grocers next door really didn’t have much left but I got enough fruit and veg for what I needed. I quite enjoyed shopping like my mum, from one shop to the other, chatting with the staff, better quality produce. It’s the way forward for now and once this has passed over.

unfortunately those working unsociable hours may struggle but it would be good if these local producers could work out a way to get food to them.

Also, in addition to idiotic people doing idiot things, a guy at the tills in front of me at the supermarket was greeted by a friend. The friend says hello and then, rightly so, says 'not gonna shake your hand!'

The guy at tills then goes 'nah not in to that' then they both shake hands anyway lol lol

A stat I've just seen: there are currently 525 people in France in intensive care due to the virus - and half of them are aged under 60.

That's worth passing on to any of the short-sighted "it won't affect me" brigade.

Italian medics were saying the same thing.

Most of the people dying now may be older folk or those with underlying conditions - but an awful lot of younger, healthier people are in ICUs across Europe relying on ventilators or other equipment to survive.

And that's at a point when infections are still rising sharply - and before health services get overwhelmed (except in a few locations, such as Lombardy).

If infection rates keep increasing, it seems inevitable that a lot of young, healthy people will also die - not just the old and unhealthy.

This is the message my Chinese office we’re giving me  - in addition to not trusting the numbers in Wuhan, that just because you’re not elderly, doesn’t make you immune to dying from this thing .......

I went shopping this morning at aldi Loughborough and got most of if not all of what I wanted. Only things I didn’t get were pasta, weetabix, porridge, cobs my son likes. This was at 9.30am and I didn’t think it was too busy. Mentioned this to the girl on the tils and she said people had been queueing at 7am it was nuts 8-9am. Yet 9.30am there was plenty for all in reality

I hope so, but it doesn't look like it's having a big effect in Spain and Italy.  Which is a worry.

I agree and it’s incomparable regardless, at least they could see what they were fighting.

There's few more now.

The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to acquire thousands of extra beds, ventilators and medical staff to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week.

To quote a certain analogy from last week..... we, along with Spain and Italy, have grossly misjudged the size of the tub and the rate of pour, and a lot of the bucket contents are now on the ground. But our video feeds are all on a 1-2 week delay, so we’re only now seeing the effects of our decisions from ages ago. Italy has stopped pouring, but they are still waiting for the video feed to catch up (it will in the next week or so). Meanwhile the UK are still pouring... a little less than last week, but we carry on..

Don't forget that the Chinese doctor who tried to warn the world of this thing was only 34 when he died. Maybe the high number of global transmissions has caused numerous mutations, some more virulent than others. Maybe the initial level of exposure is also a factor in determining the severity of the symptoms.

Another 793 deaths in one day in Italy.

Will it get that bad here ?!

Read our figure now is the same as Italy had 2 weeks ago .

Lets just hope we are better prepared in and out of hospital!

I don't want to politicise this but the last 2 governments have cut the NHS to the bone and now this is going to overwhelm an already overstretched and under-resourced service. After this thing passes there will be a huge social and economic bill to pay having (rightly so) financially supported businesses and workers. The NHS and other public services as well as us, the general public, will be footing that bill by further funding restrictions. Austerity on a scale we haven't experienced thus far.
